An Interview with Tania of What Would A Nerd Wear

11.09.10

Today I have a lovely interview with Tania of the What Would A Nerd Wear blog. Tania is a fashionable grad student with an eye for fashion, and a love of layering. Enjoy her interview!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

-I’m a grad student in British literature, and I go to a university in the midwest where it’s ridiculously cold in the winter.

2. I recently read that you celebrated your one year blogging anniversary! Congrats! How did you get interested in blogging in the first place?

-Thanks! I decided to start a blog after spending (and enjoying) some time reading other blogs. It seemed like an interesting creative outlet, a way to hone (and develop) my personal style, and do a little writing for fun. And then it was sort of spontaneous–I just started it and off I went!

3. You have wonderful style, and I’m pretty sure you’re the queen of layering. Can you tell us about your personal style?

-Oh my goodness, thank you! Christopher will laugh at the “queen of layering” because he’s always making fun of how many layers I put on in the winter. I would describe my personal style as wearable and accessible, feminine, and pared-down. It’s always difficult to describe “personal style” especially because I’m not sure I can always pin it down. Sometimes I’m in the mood to look ultra-pretty; other times, to look a little ecletic; other times, comfort is my priority. So I try to dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable and put together for whatever situation I’m going into.

4. What does your daily routine look like?

-I wake up around 7:30, make coffee while my boyfriend wakes up (he is not at all a morning person and wakes up so slowly!), then get dressed and start working around 9. I teach a few days a week around noon and hold office hours and work on teaching and grading. Somewhere in the day, Christopher takes my pictures and I put up a post. In the late afternoon, I go to the gym, make dinner, and work some more after dinner. I’m a student, so my routine mostly revolves around how I can get more reading done 🙂

5. If you had to pick one outfit to wear for the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Eeeeps, I can’t pick! But if I had to, it would probably be my blue loft dress, which I’ve worn about a hundred and two times already.

6. I read that you’re a grad student, and a teacher. How do you balance teaching, school work,

grading, and blogging every day?

-I am an extremely efficient person. So I blog as efficiently as possible, and spend a lot of my day focusing seriously on reading and teaching.

7. What are your must have pieces for fall?

-I think scarves are always a must-have, especially because I’m always cold. But this fall, I’m also excited about orange–I bought an orange skirt and got an orange sweater and shirt for my birthday–they are pretty, dark oranges, not jumpsuit orange 🙂 And I really like long cardigans (I bought a gray one). And a good pair of corduroys is always good for the fall–plus they always go on sale.

8. What do you enjoy most about blogging?

-I love the inspiration it gives me, the relationships I’ve formed with other bloggers and readers, and the incentive it gives me to not get lazy and wear sweatpants to the library.

9. When you’re not blogging, or at school, what can you be found doing?

-Wait, what? There are other things besides school and blogging? If I’m not doing one of those two, I am outside running around, bicycling, or working out; or I am on skype with my sister, who lives in California.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?

What about someone that is looking to revamp their daily outfits?

-Aspiring fashion bloggers: good-quality photographs are the golden ticket. Revampers: start small, so you feel comfortable. Add something little to your outfits bit by bit.

Thanks so much Tania for doingthis lovely interview with me!
