Historical Phoenix

10.04.11

Phoenix is still hot, hot, but I’m not going to let that get me down. Scott and I have been spending lots of in Phoenix lately and my heart is so content. Last week we drove around the more industrial and historical area of Phoenix where we spotted lots of cute buildings we had never seen before, and the prettiest old billboard painted on brick. Finding little gems like that makes me so happy.

Phoenix truly is an amazing city, full of old charm and new hopes. It’s so great to see new businesses popping up all over the place, and to see many people in the city. I can only imagine how great Phoenix is going to be come ten years.
On Sunday Scott and I went to a special screening of Urbanized at the Harkins Valley Art theater. The documentary focused on urban living and how so many large cities are poorly planned out, which leaves room for slums, poor walking/biking conditions, etc., and because of those factors and many others, the whole community suffers. The director, Gary Hustwit, was in attendance, and it was so neat to hear him talk after the film and to see him around. If you’re not familiar with Urbanized (he literally finished it three weeks ago), you might know his other films, Helvetica, and Objectified.
Seeing Urbanized made me really think about the city I live in and how I wish things were a little different. I truly want that “city” feel where you can walk anywhere and be friendly with everyone in your community. Phoenix isn’t really there yet, but I sure hope one day it will be this amazing walking city.
In other news, I just bought my tickets for the Phoenix Food Truck Festival later this month! It’s going to be SO amazing and I can’t wait to try out something from each food truck. If you live locally, are you planning on attending? If you purchase your tickets before the 10th they’re only $25 ($35 day of). Scott and I already can’t wait!
