“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” – L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables. Miss Lucy sure knew what she was talking about when she penned this now famous line! 😉 It’s hard to believe it, but October is finally here and so the best month of the year begins. October is so special for so many reason — it’s the month that Scott and I started our journey together (nine years ago on the 24th!). It’s also Scott’s birthday month, and when we celebrate all things spooky and scary, of course. October is when it finally starts to cool down here in Phoenix, and the air, along with the leaves, begin to get a little crisp. I could honestly write out a whole page more of all the things I love about October, but for now I’ll just leave you with this: PEIXOTO SPICE LATTE (the REAL PSL!).
I know I’ve been chatty about Apple Annie’s Orchard, but picking apples was really the highlight of our trip. I’ve mentioned this, but Scott and I had never picked apples during the “traditional” apple picking season before, so seeing so many apples that were ripe for the picking felt like a real treat. When we first entered the orchard they gave us this little map that showed which types of apples they had and in which rows they would be in — needless to say, Scott and I decided to just head straight for the back of the orchard because we figured it would be the least picked over. They had fuji, red delicious, and golden delicious apples all ready to be picked. I was secretly hoping they might have a few rows of honeycrisp apples, but none were to be found — that’s ok though, I’ll just have to pick up a few when I’m in Seattle in a few weeks (more on that later!). 😉
This guy made our apple picking adventure so fun — juggling around our picked apples, making me laugh as I jumped around trying to grab a few that were way at the top of the tree, only to come right behind me to pick them off with ease. I guess that’s why he’s my better half — team work makes the dream work, right! 😉
We ended up picking just enough apples to make a delicious apple crisp pie. In the orchard’s darling little market they had bags of homemade apple crisp mix, so after seeing that when we first got there we knew we had to get one and pick just enough apples to finish up the crisp. Along with crisp mix, they were selling every kind of apple, pumpkin and maple goodies you could image. In front of the market was a little makeshift booth that they were selling hot apple cider donuts out of — the smell around here was SO heavenly, and the donuts were even better. For years I’ve wanted to try a hot apple cider donut, so it felt so good to finally have one. We may have taken home half a dozen with us, only after devouring two donuts there that were straight out of the fryer. YUMM!
