A few months before Ace was born, Scott and I decided to upgrade our bed from a queen to a king size mattress. Looking back, our queen felt SO small and it makes me giggle thinking about Scott, myself, two cats and one giant pregnancy pillow squished all into our tiny bed. Luckily, we upgraded our bed a few months before our little guy made his big entrance and we all had that much more space to stretch out in. What didn’t happen before his arrival, though, was the completion of our DIY velvet headboard — because, well — we were a bit preoccupied with other things for the little guy! 😉 Anyways, keep on reading to learn how we made our velvet, king size headboard for under $250!

Look at that little guy — he’s grown so much since this photo! Anyways, I first spotted this style of headboard over on Amelia Hannah’s Instagram and fell in love with the idea! And lucky for me, she had a DIY on her blog that shared the way she followed Brady Tolbert’s DIY on Emily Henderson’s blog. Did you catch that circle? haha! Anywho, the DIY was simple enough and the end result was this beautiful headboard that we love and has been perfect for our family and space.

We did make a small change to fit our space (shortening the length of the panels so they didn’t go all the way to the wall, as that felt too overpowering for our bedroom), but otherwise we followed the two DIY’s step by step. We purchased all of the materials before Ace was born, including the recommended foam from the same place mentioned in the DIY and the blue velvet from Joann’s on a 50% off fabric day, and then Scott finished it up during the week in-between Christmas and New Year’s. I would say that if you didn’t have a baby in the middle of your project and a long honey-do list to complete, you should be able to finish this DIY within a few hours (after you order the foam, of course).
