Nami Date

03.07.12

A few nights ago I was craving something sweet after my night class. I was thinking frozen yogurt would be good, but I really wanted a non-dairy option. Scott suggested we make a stop at Nami, a vegan sweets and coffee shop right outside of downtown Phoenix. After he made the suggested I instantly had a craving for the best (and only) soynamis in town!

Scott got the Soy Capitan, and I got the O’Ginger Snap (my favorite!).
The mixture of the soft serve is part soy ice cream, and part coconut milk ice cream. I recently gave soy ice cream another try, and was really sad that I ended up with a terrible stomach ache after eating it. Nami’s half and half mixture really seemed to do the trick though, and I felt great after eating it!
I really love the space that Nami sits in. Even though it’s super tiny, the way that they have it set up really makes it feel much bigger than it actually is.

I really love going on late-night dates, and I’m so thankful that such neat little places like Nami exist in the Phoenix area! Thanks for making the suggest of stopping by my love! I have a feeling we might be making late-night stops at Nami more often!

Workflow

03.06.12

Throughout my years of blogging I’ve come to find a “workflow” that really works well for me. This term “workflow” is not something that ever really came to mind until recently when my friend Sarah so graciously told me about how she handles her workflow with regards to her photography business. I guess you could say that I’ve always had patterns in how I do things, with my blog and also my with career as a journalist, but actually putting a title on these patterns seem to put things into perspective for me and really made me think about what situations, things, and little rewards make my workflow successful for myself.

Yesterday a sweet friend (Paige!) that I spent time with during my early days in Journalism school said she was proud of me for going through Grad school, and just to keep drinking those iced coffees and I would be fine! I know it sounds silly, but iced coffees are totally my vice when it comes to getting work done. If I have one next to me, ready to sip on at any moment, I’m golden. It’s amazing what a little coffee (and sweet encouragement from friends!) can do.
I wore this outfit to campus the other day. Another part of my workflow that I’ve come to embrace this past semester is going with Scott to the main campus when he has class so I can spend time in the library. I’ve never been one to do well working at home, so it’s always nice to have that relief of being out of your home-life element and in a space where you know you can think out loud and be surrounded by people who are in a similar situation as you.

Today I have class and a research proposal paper to work on. After class though tonight Scott and I will be stopping by the 3 Days to Austin event down at CO+HOOTS! If you’re not busy, you should definitely stop by!
What is your work flow like? XO

Gadchick Issue #2

03.05.12

I am SO excited to announce that the second issue of Gadchick Magazine just launched and that yours truly wrote an article for it! I am more than thrilled to be involved with such an amazing magazine, and I am so proud to see my writing featured in their second issue!

My article focuses on how to choose a camera lens that will work best for you. I had a lot of fun putting this together, and want to thank Sarah Rhodes for allowing me to pick her brain about camera lenses! You can check out the full issue right here. Enjoy!

Sugar Glider

03.05.12

It’s almost spring, but I’m holding onto the last bit of fall and winter that I can. Come March I’m already wishing for fall to roll around, and tend to hold onto all of my “winter wear” until it gets too hot and I need to finally put them away. I read a tweet the other day that said that the person was already wishing for fall, and I could totally relate.
I recently picked up this Levi’s cape on super sale and already can’t wait for it to be a part of my fall/winter 2012 wardrobe (ok, I still might try and wear it this spring/summer!). I’m kind of obsessed with how cozy it is, and how easy it is just to throw on when I’m in in a rush or just need another layer. I swear, layers are my best fashion friend!
Scott has always been a fan of layers as well. I remember being 18 together and him wearing a sweet yellowish striped sweater layered over a button-up shirt. I’m pretty sure I have a silly photo of us together when he was wearing it! His hair was sooo long back then too!
I told Scott I slightly reminded myself of a flying squirrel while wearing this cape. He thought a Sugar Glider better fit the description! Haha

This morning Scott and I are putting everything we have into studying for a written essay test (he), and working on a research proposal (she). Sometimes school feels like a never ending cycle of crazy, but I know that come a year from now it will almost be over. Sometimes the grad school blues get the best of me and I question what I’ve gotten myself into, and then I remember that when I’m done I’ll come out of this with more knowledge than I went into it with, and will be walking away with my third degree. That in itself is enough to keep me going! However, whenever I think about writing a dissertation, or doing an applied project a cold sweat comes over me and I panic. I still have time though! I will think about that aspect of graduating a little later.

What are you up to today? How are you feeling about school right now? XO

Late Lunch at Liberty Market

03.04.12

On Thursday Scott and I headed down to Liberty Market to spend some time with our sweet friend Courtney on her birthday! Courtney had never been to LB previously before, so we figured her birthday would be a great day to give the local restaurant a try (plus, they give you $10 toward a meal on your birthday!).

Courtney got the best chicken sandwich! This is Scott’s favorite dish from Liberty Market and also apparently a big hit with the server that took our order and suggested that Courtney try it.

Scott and I split the farmer veggie sandwich with my favorite sweet potato salad on the side.
Recently I heard through the online grapevine that Liberty Market was now serving up Stumptown coffee. We were so excited to head over there and give a Stumptown cappuccino a taste!

Scott and I both really enjoyed our capps and were definitely not dissapointed. The server told us that they are now going to be sell Stumptown beans in the restaurant, and I am SO excited for that! I LOVE Stumptown beans and always try and coerce friends and family into bringing me back a bag (thank you Courtney!).

It was nice to spend some time with the birthday girl, and get to sip a delicious cappuccino! I can’t believe my own birthday is less than two months away! Time goes by so fast!

Around Town

03.02.12

This past week has been a bit of a whirlwind. Scott and I have drove to and from across town more than I can count, and have been spending so much time with sweet friends (which I am so thankful for). Yesterday we were in at least five different cities, and listened to way much Stars on our long drives. Do you ever have those jam packed weeks where you just seem to be going and going? I haven’t really had a week like this since I was an undergrad (J school students always seem to be driving all over to follow a lead, or do an interview), but I am so thankful to be so busy and have so much good going on in my life.
Today I have some work to catch up on, and Scott is busy working away on some awesome designs and displays at his internship in far-out Scottsdale. Tonight we’re so excited to celebrate Courtney (and her twin, Phil’s) birthday with a fun costumey party at The Duce! Bring on the delicious Rock Springs pie!

Matt’s With Friends

03.01.12

Last week Scott and I went on a breakfast date with our friends Sarah and Josh to Matt’s Big Breakfast. It was Sarah and Josh’s first time eating at the tiny diner, so we wanted to make sure they had a nice experience. We got up early to get there before the morning rush came in (we just missed it coming in), and got in really quickly (which was amazing, because we’ve waited over an hour to get in before!).

I LOVE being in the city in the morning. I spent almost every morning down the street from here (in that maroon and gold building pictured below) during my time as an undergraduate at ASU. I still miss my old school, and can’t believe I’ve almost been gone a whole year.

It was really great getting to spend time with Josh and Sarah. They are still fairly new to the area, so we plan to show them around to a few more of our favorite restaurants and coffee shops!

Today is also Josh’s birthday! Happy Birthday Josh!

I love the coffee at Matt’s! It comes from a local roaster a little bit outside of the city, and they really like to keep your cup full while you’re chowing down!
Scott had the special this day. It was some sort of egg scramble with sausage and peppers and hasbrowns. He really enjoyed it!
And I had my favorite cheese omelet with homefries. Can’t go wrong with this delicious dish!

Out of all the things I’ve tried at Matt’s (which isn’t too many, but I try to branch out every once and awhile), their whole-wheat toast with strawberry jam and butter is my most favorite. I could eat this solely as my morning breakfast! It’s SO good!
Do you have a favorite breakfast spot? Any local to the Phoenix area?

Elevator Love Letter

02.29.12

Some days do you every sit down to write a blog post and not know where to start? Do you start with a funny comment, or a little story from your week? Or do you just dive into it hoping that after you’re done writing something will make sense? During my time as an undergraduate working toward my Bachelor’s in Journalism I would often start writing an article and have no idea where it would take me. Sure, I know the structure of different types of articles, but sometimes all you have is little bits and pieces of the story that are coming out of your mind and you just have to believe that they will work out together later on.

Everyone’s writing process is a little different, and I’m always curious how other bloggers go about writing their posts. Do they blog at weird hours of the day like me, or do they have a set time of day that they sit down and begin to write? I’ve found that sometimes when I sit down to blog in the morning (much like now) I struggle a bit with what I’m going to say, but if I sit down late in the evening my mind just spits out everything that I’ve been holding onto and thinking about throughout the day. I don’t want to hold myself to this routine though, because every day seems to be a little bit different.
When I wore this outfit to class a few days ago I felt so dainty. I love the high-cut v-neck, and the pretty floral pattern. The fabric is also very movable, and the waist tie is a great tool for defining my natural waist. I also love my Cuvette flats from Blowfish Shoes (they’re on sale right now!). Who doesn’t love a great pair of transitional shoes?
Tonight the Phoenix Style Collective is having a meeting about our upcoming event (The Arizona Blogger Conference on April 28th at The Saguaro Hotel), and I believe there will be some vegan ice cream involved. The next few days are going to be a bit busy for Scott and I, but we’re excited about all of the fun that is to be had!
How do you go about writing your blog posts? What’s your writing style? XO

Rosey

02.28.12

I don’t often find myself attracted to very rosey colored clothing. Pinks scare me a bit, but it’s nice to find a happy medium in the rosey colors. When spring rolls around I always feel like I need to introduce a little bit more color into my wardrobe. Scarves are probably my favorite way to incorporate color, but this spring I might try and incorporate more color through other staple garments. Pushing my fashion boundaries here!

Since the weather has been so up and down lately, this is the perfect transition outfit. I like to be able to bundle up when I go into buildings (I swear, every shop keeps their store suppper cold here come spring through fall), but I also like to be able to cool down easily when I get too hot. I feel like adding a cardigan and scarf to any outfit is the perfect way to achieve this cool/warm look for those awkward late winter/early spring days!

Today I have some work to get done, and have class later on. Right now Scott and I are obsessing over the new Fun. album, and will probably listen to it to and from my class all the way on the other side of town. I almost didn’t want to give the album a chance, but I’m so glad I did. A lot of it reminds me of The Format, who was my favorite band in high school. I kind of love all of the western influences I can hear in the Fun. album. Yesterday Scott proclaimed it a West Coast album, and I totally agree!
Have you heard the new Fun. album yet? What are you up to today? XO
