Five Things I Love About Downtown Mesa Video

02.18.11

Today I wanted to share five things I love about downtown Mesa. I thought it would be a nice change because I’m always bragging about my favorite city, Phoenix.

Hope you all have a great weekend! I’v got wedding fever this weekend and will be busy being a bridesmaid (oh and doing homework when I can as well).

Valentine’s Day Wears

02.17.11
So now you know what Scott and I did for Valentine’s Day, but you haven’t really seen what we wore. Well, since it was such a special day Scott and I decided to get a little dressed up and to go along with the day’s signature color.
Sweater: JCrew; white top: Frenchi; Pendleton, vintage wool skirt: Mercantile; flats: Ruby & Bloom
Sunglasses: Ray Bans; Jacket: Banana Republic: Shirt: Gap; Knitted bow tie: Urban Outfitters;Pants: Quicksilver; Shoes: Sperry’s
For Valentine’s Day Scott got me the most beautiful vintage broach. We had spotted it a few weeks earlier while exploring the Mesa Antique Plaza, but I just didn’t think I should buy it for myself at the time. I am so happy that he bought it for me though, because I absolutely adore.
A little over a week ago I picked up this cute red knit bow tie for Scott at Urban Outfitters. For months now we’ve been searching for a red bow tie for Scott to wear to my cousin’s wedding (which is on Saturday), and when I spotted this one at UO I squealed (literally) so loud out of excitement.
Scott and I truly had a lovely Valentine’s Day. It was such a sweet day to spend together doing some of our favorite things. Our breakfast was so good, and the show was even sweeter.

Promise I didn’t hurt him! Scott and I took a similar photo to this in February of 2007 that I just love.

I really hope you all had a wonderful Valentine’s Day. Now that the holiday is over I am doing last minute things for my cousin’s wedding, trying to stay on top of my class work, and squeezing some time in for blogging. Today I have a doctor’s appointment, have to drive to Casa Grande to pick up something for the wedding, and must work on some Magazine Writing homework.

What does your day look like?

Urban Beans

02.16.11
A few weeks ago Scott and I checked out Urban Beans, a cute little coffee shop in Phoenix that we had both heard so much about. For Christmas Scott received a coupon to Restaurants.com so we decided to use part of it on our UB breakfast date.
Scott had his regular, hot americano, and I have a non-fat latte.
The shop is pretty cute and spacious. There were fun chalkboard signs, and they had some amazing looking pastries. It was SO hard to pass about getting a scone, as they seem to have the best selection in Phoenix, but we both decided getting an egg and sausage sandwich would be a good way to start our day.
Both of our sandwiches were really good, and they both came with a small salad on the side. The side was pretty tasty as well, but a little strange at breakfast time. The vibe in the shop was good though, and they were playing some great music at the time.

While there we also ran into the lovely Georganne of Frances and Smeeks. It was really nice to see her, and it seriously warmed my heart so much when she told me that she frequently checks out my blog. I am still overwhelmed by all the support I get for my blog, and I feel so lucky to have such great local, and non-local readers that read up on my life on a day-to-day basis. You guys are seriously the best.

Have you ever been to Urban Beans? What does your favorite breakfast include?

Liberty Market, Valentine’s Day Edition

02.15.11
For Valentine’s Day Scott and I celebrated with a breakfast date to Liberty Market. LB is one of our favorite restaurants, and they have the most amazing breakfast dishes.
Before going into LB Scott and I exchanged sweet cards and little gifts. He also gave me the loveliest bouquet of my favorite flowers, sunflowers, which is something he never fails to do every Valentine’s Day. I truly am one lucky lady.
For breakfast I had the veggie scramble with their famous Liberty potatoes, biscuit with honey, and coffee.
Scott had the sicilian scramble, Liberty potatoes, a biscuit with honey, and coffee as well.
Both Scott and I really enjoyed our dishes, and liked being able to have a nice meal together before the craziness of school began for the day. Breakfasts together are really something I cherish, and I love celebrating Valentine’s Day this way. Scott and I even got a little dressed up, and received the sweetest complement from a lady as we were walking to our car. Promise to share what we wore soon.
Later on in the evening we went to see Ben Kweller live, where we ran into our friends Gina and Ryan. It had been a dream of mine to see BK since I was 15, and it was amazing getting to see him play. Last night it was just him, a acoustic guitar, and his crazy amount of energy. He played many of our favorite songs, and we had a lot of fun dancing to the music. After the show we purchased a cd of the night’s set, and also chatted with BK. Scott and I even both got a little video with him, which I plan on turning into a little cute vlog.
I honestly had the best day and couldn’t have ask for a better guy to share it with.
How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

An interview with Kendi of Kendi Everyday

02.15.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Kendi of Kendi Everyday. Kendi has a sweet sense of style, and is well known for her stylish thrift finds, and for spearheading the amazing 30 x 30 project. She is honestly one sweet lady, and her blog is one of a kind.

Meet Kendi!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-Well, I am a blogger, a wife, and a recovering hoarder.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

-I’ve been blogging since 2004 (I know, I’m old. Ok?) I had a blog in college, which is the pick-up line my now husband used on me “I read your blog.”. I couldn’t say no to that. But that blog kind of faded out and when I moved to where we live now in 2008, I started a newly wed blog called “Better Off Wed” and then in December 2009 I started “Kendi Everyday.” She takes up the most time.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-I’m terrible at describing my style as it seems to change by the time I’m finished writing the sentence. But for you, I will. I like to think that my style is quirky classic. I tend to stay away from too many trendy pieces but I don’t want to be too stiff in my style. I like to have my own take on classic pieces.

4. You created the ever so famous 30 x 30 challenge. How did you come up with the idea for this?

-You know it all came from me needing a reason to stop shopping. (I guess debt wasn’t enough for me?) I had seen similar ideas in Lucky and InStyle Magazines and thought — well I can do that! So that’s what I decided to do. I decided to take 30 items and make 30 outfits in order to prove to myself that I could in fact use what I already have. I’ve since done it 4 times, so I like to think that I’ve got my Masters in Remixing.

5. What are your favorite trends for spring?

-Right now, wide leg trousers and full A-line skirts are what keep me up at night. I can’t wait until warmer weather to bust out these styles. I think bright colors are also making me long for spring. Of course you can never go wrong with a trench coat for spring.

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-Sleeping? Yes, sleeping would be one of my favorite things. But also reading whenever I can. I love memoirs, I love non-fiction books in general. And lately I’ve been trying to pick up the habit of running but my sleeping habit is getting in the way.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

-Lately I’ve been drawing inspiration from certain color palettes. I love to see how far I can go with certain colors and styles. I also gain so much inspiration from other bloggers. There are some stylish girls out there!

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Probably a flowy, a-line skirt, tall boots, a button down and a blazer. I’d probably add on a cute scarf, just for good measure.

9. You seem to have a great love of color. How do you feel about mixing bold colors with one another?

-I love it! It makes me kind of nervous, I’m not going to lie. If I’m wearing bold colors I know that I will gather many looks that day, but I can’t help but wear bold colors sometimes. It’s an instant mood lifter.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers? What about someone that wants to incorporate more color into their wardrobe, but is slightly afraid to?

-Be who you are, write what you know and be nice to people. Don’t worry about the numbers, just create a blog that you love and others are sure to love it as well. I encourage everyone to make a fashion blog, it’s one of the funnest things I’ve ever done. And as far as incorporating color — just do it. It’s good to scare yourself daily. Why not do it with a pair of red heels or a bright pink pencil skirt? Don’t be afraid of onlookers — they might just be thinking about how cute you look!

Thank you so much Kendi for doing this interview with me! Be sure and check out Kendi’s blog for some awesome re-mixed outfits, and sweet inspiration.

Happy Valentine’s Day

02.14.11
Happy Valentine’s Day, darlings!
Today is one of the most loving days of the year, and I am so happy to have someone special in my life to share it with. This year marks Scott and I’s fifth Valentine’s Day together, and it’s bound to be a day full of love and laughter.
Grey cardigan: Target; White caridgan: Target; White shirt: Frenchi; Skirt: Handmade by Scott; belt: vintage; bag: vintage/used to be my mom’s; Tights: c/o We Love Colors; oxfords: Steve Madden
Today we have plans for a nice breakfast together in downtown Phoenix, and then we’re going to see Ben Kweller (one of our all-time favorite musicians) this evening in Tempe. Ben Kweller’s music has always been special to Scott and I’s relationship, and it’s going to be extra sweet to see him together for the first time on Valentine’s Day.

Over the past five years Scott and I have alway had lovely, and very memorable Valentine’s Days. Last year he cooked me dinner, which included heart shaped pasta, gnocchi, and heart shaped bread. We also have an amazing tiny cake from Tammie Coe Cakes in Phoenix. One year he bought me my favorite flowers, sunflowers, and put them in the cutest tin watering can. Scott really is such a thoughtful guy.

Do you have Valentine’s plans? Are you going out with your sweetie, or having a girls night out on the town? What is your most favorite Valentine’s Day gift you’ve ever received?

Oh, and here’s a little candid Scott took while I was trying to take off my cardigans. Usually any time of the day I can be found like this. I really do like to laugh a lot, promise!

Happy Valentine’s Day, dears! Have a lovely day! Tell someone you love them!

Burrito Co.

02.13.11

Scott and I recently went on a little lunch date to one of our favorite mexican restaurants, Burrito Co. in Ahwatukke. Burrito Co. has THE best burritos and tortilla chips in the area. When I go there I usually get the veggie mixto (beans, lettuce, rice, and sour cream), and Scott kind of bounces back and forth between a few different things he likes.

That day he got tortilla soup and a chicken burrito.

Scott and I have been going to Burrito Co. for years now, and I am convinced it’s the only good place to get a burrito from (way better than Chipotle).

Do you have a favorite burrito spot in your town?

Mesa Antiquing

02.12.11
For years now I have been an antiquing enthusiast. When I was young my mother and grandmother used to take me to flea markers and antique stores with them, and I would roam around until something pretty caught my eye.
Today I still enjoy going antiquing and now have Scott to share that delightful experience of searching through every nook and cranny of a packed antique store with me.
Last weekend Scott and I went to a local antique store to scout out some pretty treasures.

The Antique Plaza in downtown Mesa has some of the prettiest antique dishes I have ever seen.

See the percolator? Scott bought me a similar one for my birthday last May, and soon after my grandma claimed it for herself.

I feel very lucky to have a guy in my life that is just as interested in old things as I am. We can get lost in the aisles of vintage together for hours and never get bored. He’s kind of obsessed with the idea of “picking,” (as am I) and finding the perfect vintage treasure. Somedays we find that perfect item, but other days we leave empty handed. I feel like that’s the fun of it though, as antiquing is a ever changing situation that seems to just get better every time you go.

Do you have a favorite local antique store? Do you enjoy antiquing?

Mesa Alleyway

02.11.11
Lately I’ve been thinking about all the little hidden gems that we have around town. There are the pretty historic buildings, quirky shops and restaurants, and other little landmarks that make the area what it is. Even though though Phoenix has my heart, I am a Mesa, Ariz. native, and I sometimes like showing off the town I grew up in. Now, for those of you that aren’t from the Phoenix Metropolitan area, Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler, and Phoenix are all connected, and if you drive ten or fifteen minutes one way you are more than likely able to end up in a different town. I know this isn’t how many city areas are, so I am thankful for being so connected to so many great towns.
Cardigan: J Crew
Button-up: Levi’s
Bracelet: gift from Le Mode Accesories
Belt: Vintage/used to be my mom’s
Jeans: Levi’s
Shoes: Burlap TOMS
Last week Scott and I went to downtown Mesa to do a little antique shopping. I went into it planning on finding a pretty vintage broach to give my cousin to wear on her wedding day (or whenever she wanted really), and ended up coming out with not one, but two vintage broaches!
Downtown Mesa has some really amazing exposed brick buildings. It may sound nerdy, but I totally dig the aesthetics of exposed brick, and love how it gives off this city feel (even in a small town, and by small town I mean Mesa has around 500,000 people living in it).

While Scott and I were in downtown Mesa we definitely felt like we were in some small town elsewhere. Growing up I traveled, A LOT, and I’ve spent plenty of time in teeny, tiny towns across the West coast. I’ve always found them interesting, as they always seem to have something special about them. Some of my very best thrifted finds have been from small town thrift stores, and some of my favorite coffee shops are in super small towns. I really adore the small town life, but honestly don’t know if it’s for me. I just love my city too much.

What are your thoughts on small towns? Do you find them charming, or just boring?

Brosenbrus Cafe

02.10.11

For the past few weeks Scott and I have been driving by this new coffee shop, Brosenbrus Cafe, that is near the Tempe Arizona State University campus. The other night, when it was bone chilling cold out, we decided to stop in for an evening latte.

Usually we don’t go out for coffee so late, but this evening we were both tired and needed to get some homework done, so we figured a little pick-me up latte would be ok (we even shared it).

Brosenbrus Cafe is fairly new, and the inside is filled with DIY tables, and a few chic touches. While there Scott and I spoke with one of the baristas and he explained how they made all the tables out of wooden pallets, and told us exactly how they made them. Scott has worked with pallets before, so it was interesting to hear about how others are using them.

Do you ever go out for coffee in the evening? What do you usually get?
