Dressed Up and In Line

02.10.11
The other day I did a little interview with a bright journalism student from my school. I decided to wear something a little more professional looking than my regular jeans and cardigans that have been ruling my life lately.

Grey cardigan: Target?; Polka dot cardigan: J Crew: Dress: Nick and Mo; Rubine tights: c/o We Love Colors; Boots: Cole Haan

Lately I’ve felt like I’ve been in a jeans rut. I haven’t been wearing dresses, but preferring to opt out for a comfy pair of skinny jeans and a cardigan for my long days at school (and every other day for that). I really want to only wear jeans maybe three times a week, so I’m definitely going to have to try and stretch my dresses and skirts collection until I can purchase a few more pieces that will make this transition easier.
This week I am fairly busy with school, and writing. I’m also in the midsts of applying for grad school! Oh my! I do have plans for a few fun mini photoshoots around town though, and also attending a free concert on the ASU campus on Friday.

I can’t believe Valentine’s Day is so, so close. I still need to get all my valentines together!

Do you still give out Valentine’s Day?

Cider and Brick

02.09.11
I’ve said this once, and I’ll say it again, I am determined to hold onto the last bit of winter here in Phoenix as long as I can. I love everything about winter, cold weather, Christmas time, good food, pretty snow, a wonderful state of mind. However, spring weather has certainly been in and out of Phoenix lately, and before I know it warm coats, and layered cardigans won’t be an option anymore.
Cider dress: c/o Shabby Apple; Tights: Target; Flats: Ruby and Bloom

The folks at Shabby Apple were kind enough to send me this lovely dress. The moment I saw it, I instantly fell in love. I just adore the color, shape, and lovely detail on the top. Personally, I first thought of fall when I saw this dress, but then I realized that it’s an every season dress, as orange seems to be like a color that can be worn all year long.

I decided to wear this dress to my cousin’s bridal shower. I felt elegant, and beautiful in it, and was so ready to celebrate my cousin getting married. It was a lovely evening, and I am so glad that I was able to share it with her.
It really is a perfect twirling dress.
See the pretty purple detail?
Scott and I took these photos in downtown Mesa, on the side of the building that I had guitar lessons in early on in college.

Linton-Milano Music Cener is a true landmark in Mesa, and is somewhere that I am proud to say that I attended. It has been around for over 60 years, and is a place that I am sure most people in the area would say that they have visited a time or two (or ten realistically). They have a wide selection of instruments, and offer all kinds of lessons. One of the Linton boys is even in the band Jimmy Eat World. It truly is a special, and big piece of Mesa history.
Do you have a local music store that you love?

An interview with Kristine of Kristine. Or Poly.

02.08.11

Today we have an awesome interview with Kristine of Kristine. Or Poly. Kristine is a local gal who has such a great style, and a real knack for finding that great thrifted/vintage piece. She is also a wife to a nice guy named Matt, and will be moving to Japan soon.

Meet Kristine!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-Hello! I’m Kristine. I am a personal style blogger over at Kristine. Or Polly.! I am recently married to my wonderful and talented husband, Matt, who takes all of the photos on my blog. We got married in September 2010 and we are absolutely loving it. Right now we are in Phoenix, AZ, but come April we will be heading off to live in Japan for at least a year 🙂 I love clothes, traveling, pizookie, big glasses, ruffles, and musicals!

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

-Hmm… I’ve been reading blogs for a really, REALLY long time now. In 2007, I started Kristine. Or Polly., but it was a different thing back then. It was basically a collection of things I found on the Internet that I liked or found inspiring. I didn’t really update it often or take it too seriously. My favorite types of blogs were personal style blogs, so I thought about kind of transitioning my blog to a personal style blog for a while. I think I can truly say that my only real passion is style and fashion, so it had always been in the front of my mind. Last November, two people that I really admired really encouraged me to start style blogging, so I just jumped right in! Since then, I’ve been able to sort of develop the blog into something legitimate that I’m really proud of!

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-It is difficult for me to describe my style, because it varies from day to day. I would probably say it is quirky/girly/modest/fun. I like to have a sense of humor with my outfits and not take anything too seriously. I love doing this by mixing patterns or throwing a bright color into a neutral outfit.

4. You seem to have a real knack for incorporating vintage and thrifted clothing into your daily outfits. Could you cue us in on how you do this so effortlessly?

-Thanks! To me, vintage shopping is a solution to a problem I have. I love vintage-inspired prints and I love knee-length skirts/dresses, but the stores you would find in the mall have a definite lack of both of those. I guess when I go into vintage shops, I look for styles that are emulated today by stores like Anthropologie. Nothing too out of the modern-day realm. This makes it easy to incorporate the pieces I find into my wardrobe! Another way I do this is deliberately mixing vintage styles with a very modern element. For example, wearing a modern shoe with a vintage skirt. I think this also creates a very unexpected but intentional look. Mixing styles and eras is a lot of fun for me!

5. What are your favorite trends for winter?

-I’m a big fan of lace up boots. And leopard print. Which might be why I just bought a pair of lace-up leopard print boots. Imagine that!

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-Lately, it’s been spending time with my husband, learning how to sew, learning Japanese, and just spending time with our family and friends before we make our big move in April.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

-So much! I love looking at other blogs of course – to me there is something so unique and real about looking at a person’s style and seeing their personality in it. I also love J.Crew spring catalogs – they really use color in a way that appeals to me. Japanese street style is another great inspiration – always has been, ever since my early days of high school. Their style is fearless, but it appears effortless at the same time, which I think is amazing.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Oh man, what a tough question! Can I pick an outfit that I don’t actually have right now? It would probably be a colorful Marc by Marc Jacobs knee-length dress with a J.Crew “Jackie” cardigan, a bold skinny belt worn at the waist, and some bright heels! And maybe add a statement necklace in there, too.

9. I’ve notice that you’re really not afraid of wearing a lot color. How do you find a balance between color in your outfits, and what is your favorite color(s) to style?

-Yes, I LOVE color! It’s hard for me to describe how I find balance with color in my outfits – I just do what feels right for me. There are a couple of ways to do this, though. One of the easiest is to pull from the patterns – for example, if you are wearing a patterned skirt, wear a top that is the same color as a color in the skirt. Another is to wear one bold piece, and pair it with neutrals like black or brown. But I also like to just mix completely different colors together – although there’s really no rhyme or reason to that. My favorite colors to style are probably pink and purple. I love those colors, and I’m always looking for ways to style them in more unpredictible ways.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers? What about someone that would love to score some great vintage clothes, but has no idea where to look?

-Haha, I’m not sure if I’m one to give advice, but I would say to just be yourself. My favorite blogs are the ones I can tell are unique and original, and ones that have a really distinct voice. I also only continue to read blogs where I can tell the blogger is a nice person. Oh yeah, and don’t blog just to become “big” or famous. Blog because you love it! And for someone looking for vintage clothes- I would definitely say to check out antique malls and consignment stores, but also, be prepared to hunt! If you live in Phoenix, two of my favorite places for vintage are Buffalo Exchange on Mill and University, and Butter Toast in downtown Phoenix!

Thank you so much for doing this interview with me Kristine! Don’t forget to check out Kristine’s blog for amazing outfit inspiration!

Bumble Bee Layering

02.07.11
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about traveling. I’ve spent a good portion of my life traveling. I been to every state on the West Coast, plus a few in the Midwest, New York, and Hawaii. I’ve also done a little traveling over seas, and have visited England, Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, and Spain. It’s been a few years since I’ve gone on a really good trip, and would love to head to somewhere fun this summer.
Cardigan: Target; Black tank top: Roxy; Striped t: H&M; Jeans: Levi’s; Booties: Jeffrey Campbell

I’ve been wanting to make a trip up to the Northwest, specifically the Seattle area where my mom is from. I have a lot of family up there, and I would love to spend some time in a place that is near, and dear to my heart. Its been many years since I was there last, and I would love to show Scott around. Right now I am thinking that we could go to a million coffee shops, hang out at the Puget Sound, and wandering around Pike Place Market.

Other than Seattle, I would really love to go to Portland. I was there a few years ago and fell in love with city. I think their public transportation is amazing, and being around that amount of water always makes me feel more like my self. Also on my list is: San Francisco, California (I have family there, and Katie lives near by), Austin, Texas, Grand Rapids, Michigan (family near by and I would love to meet-up with Tieka), and Boston, Massachusetts.

Do you have an upcoming travel plans? What’s your dream place to visit?

Hangs with Kristine of Kristine. Or Poly.

02.06.11
Friday night Scott and I hung out with Kristine of Kristine. Or Polly., and her husband Matt.
I recently discovered Kristine’s blog, and was shocked to find out that she I hung out in a similar group of friends during high school. Kristine was actually at the show that Scott played on his birthday four days after we started dating (in which I was in attendance).
It was really awesome to talk with Kristine and Matt about blogging. They both really understand the dynamics that go into blogging, and the reasons why we both do it. It was so neat to just talk with them about taking pictures, finding new places to take photos, where we shop, and other little things that go into blogging. It was seriously the best conversation!

We met up at Liberty Market and enjoyed some really yummy desserts. Scott and I shared a zebra brownie, and he had vanilla ice cream as well. Kristine had a ice cream sandwich, and Matt had a zebra brownie + vanilla ice cream also.

Scott and I plan on hanging out with Kristine and Matt very soon. They just announced that they are going to be moving to Japan in April, which makes me sad, but we’re definitely going to hang out while they’re still here in the states.

Flowers and Sunshine

02.05.11
Before the big storm hit Phoenix this week I was definitely feeling the spring vibe. The sun was shining, and I had flowers on my mind.
Sunnies: Ray Bans; blouse: Tucker for Target; Necklace: Falling Whistle; Cardigan: Gap; Bag: Coach; Jeans: Levis: Booties: Jeffrey Campbell

Lately I’ve been thinking about spring, and how I am going to transition my wardrobe into the warmer weather. I am truly a cardigan and boots girl, so it’s going to be interesting to see what I think up for spring outfits. Lately I’ve been perusing a few local stores, looking for cute warm weather clothing pieces. So far I haven’t really purchased anything, but I look forward to the hunt.

Awhile back Scott was given this Falling Whistle, and lately I’ve been wearing it with everything. It has a truly amazing back story, and I feel proud every time I wear it.

Are you ready for spring? How are you going to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring?

Dinosaur Alert!

02.04.11

Did you know there is a dinosaur in downtown Phoenix? Well, there is!

This guy was spotted outside of the Phoenix Art Museum, just hanging out.

Obviously Scott and I aren’t scared or anything, but it was a little scary. I’m pretty sure he even put his hand on Scott a little. Oh my!

In With The Old

02.04.11
Lately I’ve been trying to find the beauty in clothing items I’ve had for years. I recently dug through my closet and found a few pieces that I’ve had for years, and haven’t worn in years. Even though these items haven’t seen the light of day in awhile, they still are loved, like this dress I wore to class.
Headband: MaieDae Etsy
Cardigan: Banana Republic
Dress: Old Navy circa 2006
Hunter colored tights: c/o We Love Colors
Boots: BP

I remember buying this dress for two reasons: A. It’s jean and I’ve always loved jeans dresses, and B. A close friend had the same one and I just loved it on her, so I needed my own.

Dresses have been my go-to item lately. They are just so easy, and are great when I’m in a rush to get out the door to class.

What is your morning routine usually like? What is your go-to clothing item when you’re in a rush to get out the door?
