Black & Stripes

01.18.11
This morning I unfortunately don’t have a interview to share with you, but I promise next week the interview will be back on track. Anyways, on to the outfits!
Now, I know it’s only January, but it’s already starting to feel like spring in Phoenix. Lately I’ve been able to go out and about without any kind of jacket at all, and I’ve been taking full advantage of it. However, since it’s still winter I like to stick to my dark basics (ok, maybe that’s all year round for me anyways), and lately I’ve been loving stripes.
Sunglasses: Ray bans; Necklaces: gift from my mom, and vintage; Striped shirt: Nordstroms Rack; Bracelet: Gift; Jeans: Levi’s; Boots: Steve Madden
Sunglasses: Ray Bans; Cardigan: Banana Republic; Flannel: Levi’s; Jeans: Levi’s; Boots: Fossil
Lately I’ve found myself trying to accessorize more, which includes bracelets (which I’m pretty bad at wearing) and necklaces that haven’t seen daylight in awhile.
This past weekend went by pretty quickly for Scott and I. We didn’t really do much, but it seemed to be over before we knew it. Today is our first day of the spring semester and we’re both really excited. Scott is attending his first class as an ASU student, and I’m having my last first day as an undergraduate. Today is bittersweet for myself, and I am hoping for a wonderful semester for the both of us.

Lately we’ve both been digging boots, like they are all we wear. However, with the temperature rising I see that changing in the near future (unfortunately). I can hear my Salt Water Sandals calling my name already. Oh my!

With regards to the day’s accessories again, the diamond necklace was a gift from my parents on my 21st birthday, and the vintage beaded necklace was a gift from my grandma.

The metal bracelet was also a gift from my mom, and is not something I wear often, but I do like it for its chunkiness.

After our classes, I one and he two, we are headed to central Phoenix to meet up with Kara and Shawni. Kara and I met last March at a local coffee shop, and I’m excited to have another blogger meet-up with her and finally meet Shawni.

What are you plans for today? If you’re in school, did you go back yet? What are you studying?

Friend Hangs

01.17.11
This past week was a busy one, so I didn’t really get the chance to post these photos of when Scott and I hung out with our friend Gina two days after she got engaged. We all went to Shane Co., visited to Soleri Bridge in Scottsdale that Scott really wanted to see, ate at Chipotle, and got a free Sprinkles cupcakes.
The bridge in its entirety cost millions of dollars to make! Oh my!

Red velvet Sprinkles cupcake! It certainly tasted amazing because it was free (got to love those Twitter word of the day).

It was really nice to spend some time with Gina. With our different schedules we don’t get to see each other as often as I would like, but when we do get together it’s always wonderful. As mentioned before, she recently got engaged (and turned 23!) and I am so excited and happy for her. Here’s to hoping even more that this is a great one for her and her fiance Ryan (and for our friendship as well). I am definitely hoping for many more hang dates in the near future!

Abandoned Outtakes

01.16.11
Today I wanted to share a few more photos from Scott and I’s abandoned house hunting adventure.
The house was run down and barely there, all the windows were gone and it was full of bees.

The insides were pretty gutted, and very dirty.

The ceiling had a whole in it, and I worried about what was inside the hole.

There’s Scott, taking a picture of me taking a picture of him. He was standing near all the sheep that were feeding on the nearby grassy field. His curiosity for life always makes me smile.
Wishing you all a wonderful Sunday.

Sugarlips Cupcakes

01.14.11
On New Year’s Eve I was introduced to this little cakery called Sugarlips. A family friend purchased a dozen cupcakes at half price (buy one get one free on Friday’s), and let me pick out a delicious mint chocolate cupcake. Well, after this first cupcake I was hooked and decided I needed to visit the little cakery myself.
Scott and I went on a Friday so the cupcakes were buy one, get one free ($1 for each).

We got spice, chocolate, lemon, and vanilla with strawberry filling.

I tried every one except the spice and enjoyed them all. These cupcakes were really good, but didn’t surpass the goodness that is Urban Cookies. I’ve been craving one of their delicious cupcakes, and hopefully will get one soon.
Are you a cupcake fan? What’s your favorite kind?

Abandoned Chandler

01.13.11
For a few weeks now I have been obsessed with the idea of finding, and roaming around a few abandoned buildings. Since I live in a city that is pretty built out and full, there isn’t much room for such a thing, but while out in Chandler Scott and I spotted this abandoned home right off the side of the road. I immediately told Scott to turn around, and pull over so we could look around.
The home was most likely built in the 1970’s, and therefore not incredibly old, bust till neat. All the glass windows were gone, and the inside was filled with bees, so Scott and I stuck pretty close to the outside of the building.

Cardigan: My mom’s; Striped long sleeved shirt: Banana Republic; J typewriter necklace: Fancy Tiger; Jeans: Levi’s; Rings: vintage and a family heirloom; Bracelet: Kate Spade; Shoes: Sperry’s
Jacket: Banana Republic; Shirt: Target; Jeans: Levi’s; Boots: Fossil
The house was sitting on a couple acres of land, and right behind it was a large farming field with dozens of sheep on it. I felt kind of strange wandering around the home, and may gotten spooked a few times, but overall thought it was pretty neat to be there. Sometime in the future I would like to go back, and discover similar buildings.

I may or may not have grabbed Scott’s hand a few times when I thought something moved, or that someone was in the house, but shhh.

I purchased this vintage J typewriter necklace from Fancy Tiger, an amazing craft store in downtown Denver that my friend Ashley told me about. The J stands for John, Scott’s first name (I know I’ve mentioned that before, but usually refer to my guy as Scott).

Rings are one of my very favorite things, and the two I am wearing were both gifts. The ring with the garnet in the middle was a gift from my grandma Betty before she passed away, and the turquoise ring was a gift from Scott (I picked it out from a local vintage store). The black Kate Spade idiom bracelet, which says “Draw the Line” on the inside, was a Christmas money purhcase, and it’s one of my new favorite accessories.

Scott’s SLR camera was a thrift find. It’s a Canon AE-1, and the zoom lens on it was also thrifted. It takes beautiful photos (as directed by it’s great photographer), and today we are picking up a roll of film that we shot in the very first week of the new year. Promise to try and share a few!

Today Scott and I don’t really have too much planned, other than picking up our photos. Ideally, I would like to go shopping for a vintage satchel bag, pick up a iced honey vanilla latte from Giant Coffee, and take a few outfit photos, but we’ll see where the day takes us.

Do you think abandoned buildings are neat, or just spooky? What are your plans for today?

Matt’s Big Breakfast Take 3

01.12.11
Before my meeting downtown last week Scott and I got breakfast at one of our favorite spots, Matt’s Big Breakfast. Matt’s is famous for their amazing food, tiny seating area, and timely waits to get in. Fortunately, we went early enough that we didn’t have to wait at all and just walked right in.

Scott and I both decided to have the special, eggs benedict and home fries. I had never tried eggs benedict before, so I figured it was about time. I’m not much of a ham person (heck, I’m not much of a meat person), but I did like the meal. I really just wanted to dip the warm english muffin in the holiday sauce and eat just that, but I figured it would be a sin to let the other food go to waste.

Scott also really enjoyed his eggs benedict, and the coffee too. I’m pretty sure we each had two cups, and I could probably have gone for a third. Hopefully we’ll be able to go to Matt’s more during the semester, as we both have most mornings off.
Are you a breakfast person? I definitely am! My whole life I’ve had low sugar problems, so when I get up in the morning I always have to eat something so I’m not grouchy and can properly function. What’s your favorite breakfast food?

An interview with Sylvia of I wander, I wonder

01.11.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Sylvia of I wander, I wonder. A few months back we were introduced via the internet through our mutual friend Gina. Sylvia has a super cute blog filled with daily outfit posts, recipes/cooking how-to’s, and various outings that occur during her daily life.

Meet Sylvia:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-Well, hello! I’m Sylvia, I’m 22 and a production assistant at a bilingual cable network, hoping to work my way into the wonderful world of film production. I live in Santa Monica, California with my goofy Australian boyfriend and in my free time I write my blog, i wander, i wonder. I was born in Poland and raised in Chicago, and have been bit with a huge traveling and exploring bug, so I’ve been loving getting to know Los Angeles and a new nook of the world.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

-Out of college, I was working in customer service at this company where I found myself with a lot of downtime. I started to discover other people’s blogs and loved the medium as it showcases the styles and daily lives of normal yet still extraordinary women (and men), and I thought that it was a great community to be a part of and a great way to express and also play with my creativity while sharing the inspiring things I come across.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-I work in a casual/creative office environment where pretty much anything goes, but I still like to dress professionally, so I would describe my style as professional bohemian. I try to wear classic and appropriate clothing but with quirky and glamorous elements to make them more fun and things that don’t fit too tightly on my body but still fit. My sister says that I’m a gypsy in terms of my style, and I wouldn’t argue, but I’m rather a gypsy with a job in the corporate world.

4. Recently I’ve noticed quite a few vintage pieces making their way into your outfit posts. What is your outlook on vintage clothing?

-I love vintage clothing because I think that style is really timeless and it’s so much more fun for me to find unique items that have a history rather than just the things you can find at the mall. I think it’s kind of a treasure hunt when you shop vintage and there’s so many things both interesting and awful that make you think about why they were made in the first place and what kind of wearer they were aimed for. Plus, I consider myself an old soul, so in a quirky way, I feel like the older vintage pieces represent me a bit better.

5. What are your favorite trends for winter?

-I’ve been loving chunky knits and faux furs, as well as full mid-calf-length skirts and maxi skirts. I like the idea of mixing thick knits with delicate fabrics like silks. I also really dig the mixed neutral look and I think it will continue for Spring, so I’m already looking forward. I’ve begun introducing semi-neutral but colorful pieces into my wardrobe as we get into late winter like lilacs, light greyish blues, and faded rosy pinks, but neutralizing them to keep them from becoming too pastelly and still winter appropriate.

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-I work full time so when I’m not working or blogging, I’m probably just relaxing. Thrifting, cooking, going to the farmer’s market, exploring, watching my favorite shows and movies, reading (mostly magazines and cookbooks, as of late), or just trying to catch up with friends. I’m also the occasional dog walker and dog sitter, which I enjoy, as I get to roam around our neighborhood with some super sweet furry creatures and check out new places and meet new people.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

-I draw fashion inspiration from a lot of different aspects. Anything can really inspire me at any moment. I’ve always been attracted to Hollywood glamour both in terms of costumes and celebrity style. Through my travels I’ve taken in a lot of inspiration as well; Art, street style, the things in my mind, the things I see in magazines and blogs, and the people in my life also contribute a lot. From my mom & my sister to my grandma and even my dad, there’s isn’t a closet I won’t raid for inspiration.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-You can’t ask me this! I honestly believe that style is ever-evolving, and your favorite thing today may not be your favorite thing tomorrow and so on and so forth. There’s so many beautiful things to wear I can’t imagine just having to stick with one. But I will say that if I was trapped on a desert island and could only have one item, I’d want a beautiful silk kimono robe with some sort of print; luxurious, glamorous, and incredibly comfy.

9. I’ve been loving the baking/cooking posts you’ve been doing lately! What got you interested in spending time in the kitchen, and what’s your favorite dish/baked good to make?

-I come from a family where we ate a lot of homemade food. I was always so jealous of my friends who got to eat out or have pizza for dinner. We only got that as a treat on special occasions. However, as I’ve gotten older, and especially in college, I learned what a blessing it really was when I started eating a lot of processed foods and I didn’t feel well after, so I made it an important priority in my life to cook. This way I know exactly what I’m eating and I feel like I can be much healthier in my cooking styles and portions this way. I suppose that’s the anal part of me and yet, it’s turned into this relaxing and fun hobby. I still can’t say I’m much of a baker as I’ve only really made pumpkin bread and one pie, but my mother loves to bake and I always rather feared it, so this year, I decided to face my fear and just do it, and in a way I feel more connected to her.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers? What about someone that is new to blogging?

-Well, I feel like I’m still very new and could still use advice myself! The one thing I’d say to those starting out is to make sure you put out what you really love and care about and stay true to yourself. Don’t worry about numbers or traffic. If you are good at what you do, readers will come. Patience is key and so are good photos.

Thank you so much Sylvia for doing this interview for me (and for getting your answers to me so quickly!). Please don’t forget to check out Sylvia’s lovely blog and for daily outfits, yummy recipes, and quirky peeks into her life and the places she goes.

Bicycle Wear

01.11.11
The other day I took my 1970’s Schwinn bicycle out for a stroll. The weather in Phoenix was definitely chilly, so I needed lots of layers. This past semester I didn’t have many chances to take my bike out, but I’m hoping for many bike dates with my guy come spring.
Sweater: Eddie Bauer
Cardigan: J Crew
Shirt: Rubbish
Scarf: Forever 21
Jeans: Levi’s
Charcoal knee highs: c/o We Love Colors
Boots: Steve Madden

My bicycle was a gift from Scott a few years back. I had a 1970’s English made Raleigh, but unfortunately it was stolen. I do believe however that my Schwinn suits me much more nicely.

The bike was purchased from a neighbor of Scott’s at a garage sale. I believe it was $25, and Scott did a wonderful job of cleaning it up. Right now I have another bike that is waiting to be fixed up (a vintage girl’s bike), and Scott has a few vintage bikes as well. We been pretty much collecting bikes for three or more years now, and we’ve had a lot of fun with them. Two semesters ago Scott would bring our bikes downtown and we would ride around the area together on my break. I hope to do that more this semester!

Today Scott and I spent time with our friend Gina who just got engaged (Congrats Gina and Ryan! We love you!). We went to have her ring sized, got coffee at Press coffee, checked out the Soleri bridge in Scottsdale, had lunch at Chipotle, and got free cupcakes at Sprinkles (best thing ever!). Scott and I also spent time helping my mom sort through tons of our things, including loads of my baby clothes, toys, and picture. I also sorted through a few of my mom’s things and found some great dresses that I plan on wearing soon.

What did you do today?

Civic Space Park

01.08.11
Thursday morning I had a meeting in downtown Phoenix, and Scott had a few errands to run at ASU, so we made a breakfast date out of it. We went down a little early to eat at Matt’s Big Breakfast and luckily we just walked in and snagged a table. After enjoying our eggs benedict and coffee, we walked to the park near my school and enjoyed the grass, sunshine, and gorgeous view.
Sweater: Mommed (Banana Republic)
Black cardigan: Can’t remember
Grey t-shirt: Kohls
Necklace: Gift from my friend Courtney (Dolly and Boy)
Green pants: UO
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell
Jacket: Banana Republic
T-Shirt: Levi’s
Necklace: Gift from Courtney
Pants: Quicksilver
Shoes: TOMS, won in a contest from Frances
We took these photos around 10:20 a.m., and the light was just perfect. A few years ago they built this park as a place for ASU students to hang out during break. There is an art gallery, coffee shop, and loads of sitting space in the grass. I’m pretty sure this is also the best place to get a full on city view, which I love to take in. I know I’ve said this before, but I feel so blessed to be able to go to such a great school in such an amazing area.
Since Scott and I are out for holiday break, we haven’t been in downtown much (sadly), so it was nice to spend a morning there. Downtown is the area that I enjoy most in the whole city, and being there always makes me feel great. There are so many great coffee shops, boutiques, and lovely people in this city. I’m so proud to be a part of such a great community!

After our photo break I had a fantastic meeting with my undergraduate advisor. For all except the most recent semester I had an advisor that I didn’t mesh with so well, so to have this new, lovely lady looking out for me is a blessing. She has a sign up in her office that says “Crying is ok here,” and every time I see it my heart warms a little. She gave me some great news this afternoon, and hopefully in a few short months I can announce what I’m doing after I graduate with my Bachelor’s in May. I don’t want to jinx it though, so I’m going to keep it a secret!

Scott and I went to see Country Strong last night and I loved it (he liked it too). Today I have a few errands to run before Scott gets off of work, and then we probably will do something fun around Tempe.

What are you plans for this lovely Saturday?
