An Interview with Mel of Idee Geniale

11.16.10

Today I have a sweet interview with Mel of Idee Geniale. Mel blogs about her daily outfits, works in the fashion industry in NYC, and has one of the most unique styles around. Enjoy!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself!
-My name is Melanie and I grew up in Canada. I moved to NY 2 years ago for my job ( i currently work in the fashion industry).

2. How long have you been blogging for, and how did you get interested in blogging?
-I’ve had my blog for over a year now. I got started by joining chictopia (www.chictopia.com) and from there I branched off with my own blog. It’s kind of addicting!

3. How would you describe your personal style?
-Quirky, romantic and a touch of vintage

4. What does your daily routine look like? Well, these days I wake up way too late. But usually wake up, put together an outfit, and run some product in my hair. I take my outfit pics right before leaving for work. Then I work a 9-6pm. If i’m not going out for dinner with friends, I’m usually home by 7pm, get into leggings and a tee and just hangout and work on a post for the blog and catch up on blogs I follow.

5. What are your must have items for fall?
-Hats, any style from slouchy knit to felted fedoras, tights of all colors, and a good fitting coat.

6. I’ve read that you’re usually very busy working for Kensie. What do you like to do on your time off?
-I’d love to have more time to knit! I have so many projects in the works but no time to finish them up. I also have a very tight crew of ladies that I hang out with, so tights that we started our own gang called the Downtown Dolls (www.downtowndolls.blogspot.com) and when i’m not with them I’m checking new hangouts in Brooklyn.

7. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?
-It would definitely have to include my vintage brown Dexter boots and my denim jacket. The perfect combination. And maybe a vintage dress to complete.

8. I read that you’re originally from Ottawa, ON Canada. What do you miss most about home?
-Right now it’s my nephew Quinn! I do love the fact that I’m at least on the same coast as my family, since I was living in Vancouver before moving to NY. Being able to see them every few months has been so nice since I don’t think I’ll ever move back to Ottawa.

9. What do you enjoy most about blogging?
-I’ve met so many wonderful friends through blogging! I’ve never imagined that it would start new friendships but it has and I am so thankful. And I’m not just talking through the internet. I’ve actually met these ladies in real life and they’re just as amazing as their blogs.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?
-Stay true to yourself and your style.

What about someone that wants to add a few thrifted pieces to their wardrobe (you seem to always find the greatest thrifted items), but aren’t sure where to start?

-I’d say keep an open mind when thrifting. I find some pretty quirky pieces but when you pair them with a basic jean short or black skirt, that crazy paisley blouse isn’t going to look so costumey. Take your time to look through all the racks. You’re sure to find something that suits you. I also keep in mind of what i’m looking for that day, anything from shoes to say, neutral items, that way you can focus and stay on track.

Thanks!

Thank you so much Mel for doing this interview with me! Be sure to check out Mel’s blog, Idee Geniale, for a little peek into her world.

Phoenix Pie Social 2010

11.15.10

This past Saturday was the first ever Phoenix Pie Social. Scott and I have been waiting for this social for months now, and were so happy that we were able to attend. We each bought five tasting tickets, and thoroughly indulged in all the homemade pie goodness that was happening all around. We actually ended up getting there a little over an hour after the social started, and I was worried that all the pies would be gone by then, but I was so excited to see that there was still a ton of pies when we got there.

The first pie we tried was made by a celebrity chef and was a cream cheese caramel pie of sorts.

The pie was super yummy, and was a great way to start out our testing.
They were also auctioning off pies, and they all looked so good.

The second pie we tried was a basil, banana, chocolate, and marshmallow pie. I was a little weary of trying this one, but it was actually very good, and very filling.

Next was a butterscotch pie with a yummy meringue on top.
While I was eating butterscotch, Scott tried a chili pumpkin pie. Since chili and I don’t mix, I just smelled the pie. My nose was burning afterwards!
Next was a cranberry apple that was probably my favorite of the whole social. Scott and I both really loved the crust.

Scott also had a piece of apple pie that he called mediocre.
Here’s a little shot at one of the many pie tables. Since each piece cost one tasting ticket all you had to do was hand your ticket to the server and they would put a piece on your plate (that you had to re-use over, and over).
By this point I was SOO full, but just knew that I had to use all of my tasting tickets. I also still had this urge to try a sweet potato pie, and the raw pumpkin pie that I had heard so much about.
The sweet potato pie was pretty good, but I wasn’t able to finish it. Before this I don’t believe I had ever tried sweet potato pie, so I’m glad that I at least tried it.
Last up was the raw pumpkin pie that one of the girls from Butter Toast Boutique made. It was really good and I actually would love to learn to make a pie like this.
Scott had finished all his pies before me, so toward the end he was being a good sporting and sharing most of my pieces with me. Thanks love!

That same afternoon there was an arts parade going on in the same area, so Scott and I walked around a little bit, watched the Andrew Jack Jihad set, and talked with a few friends later on in the evening.

(Jobot, aka new favorite coffee shop in downtown Phoenix)

There was this amazing two-story VW bus there for the parade.

Toward the end of the afternoon this nice lady gave us these pretty sunflower pins. The theme of the night had something to do with growing, so I can where the sunflowers fit into it.
Overall, the pie social was a lot of fun, and by the end of it we were both so incredibly full. I really hope this pie social is something that turns into an annual event. Next time I would love to bake a few pies myself and bring them out for everyone to try.
Have you ever been to a pie social in your area? What’s your favorite kind of pie?

Because Saturday’s Can Be Lazy…

11.13.10

I have spent all morning, and the early part of the afternoon drinking coffee, working on design homework, reading up on my favorite blogs, cleaning, and dreaming of eating yummy pie.
Now it’s time to finish getting ready, make a quick trip to the airport, and then off to eat some pie at the pie social that is going on in downtown Phoenix.
What have you been up to today?

Cozy and Laced-Up

11.12.10
Outfit:
Sunglasses: Ray Bans
Hot Toddy Scarf in Gray: c/o of Spotted Moth
Cardigan: Gap circa 2007
Shirt: Frenchi
Jeggings: Levi’s
Boots: Steve Madden
Monica over at Spotted Moth was kind enough to send me this beautiful cowl to style up. I was really impressed with how beautifully wrapped up the cowl was (think pretty brown tissue paper and twine), and was thrilled to find such a warm and cozy item inside of it.
I wore this outfit to class on a chilly morning and found the cowl to be super cozy.
I recently purchased these light colored jeggings from Levi’s. For years, and years I have always been a dark denim kind of girl, but after having the dye from my jeans rub off onto so many shirts, shoes, and purses, I decided it was time to go with some lighter denim (with the help of Scott’s encouragement). I purchased these jeggings at Urban Outfitters and already really love them. They have a little bit of stretch to them, but actually feel like real jeans.

On this particular morning I wore this cowl wrapped around my neck twice. However, later in the day when I was sitting in class, and walk to and from my other classes (inside), I found that it was more comfortable to wear the cowl hanging down, and more around my shoulders. I felt like I was wearing a cozy shawl that I could wrap my hands in.
(these lace-up boots are quickly becoming my favorite.)

This morning I plan on sipping coffee, running errands, and answering some emails.
What do you have planned for today?

In the Mornin’

11.10.10
Every morning seems to be colder than the one before around this area. The chill has finally set in, and each morning has a slight sweet bitterness to it. I have finally found myself able to drink my hot coffee outside (needing it to keep me warm), and wearing a sweater out of necessity, and not just because I would rather wear a sweater than no sweater at all (even in 90 degree weather).
Outfit-
Sunglasses: Ray Bans
Sweater: Rubbish
Shirt: Frenchi
Key necklace: Dolly and Boy
Pants: BDG
Moccs: Minnetonkas
Outfit:
Sunglasses: Ray Bans
Sweater: Eddie Bauer
Shirt: Hanes
Pants: Quicksilver
Boat shoes: Sperry’s
The light in the morning around here has been superb lately. Usually by the time I get out of class, or get done at my internship it is pitch dark or just on the verge of dark. I foresee many more morning outfit shoots in my near future.
Lately Scott has been really into bundling up as well. This sweater that he got for his birthday has an extra thick collar, almost scarf like, and keeps him extra warm. I have a feeling that sweater will be working its magic a lot this fall/winter.
I’m still really loving my new moccs. I have, and always will be a moccasins girl. I honestly could wear them each and every day. They are definitely the most comfortable pair of shoes that I own.

(Scott still really loves his Sperry’s, and I foresee them getting some good use this season.)

These last few days have been kind of hectic around here. Scott has been working hard to get things ready for his big transfer to Arizona State University next semester, and I have been stressing over classes, homework, and the occasional silly thing (ya know, because I usually stress over the silly things most).

Yesterday evening Scott and I had a evening coffee and hot coco date at Coffee Bean, and watched American Pickers. Tonight after class I hope to get some coffee, pick up a few things at Target, and spend the evening watching some kind of holiday movie.

What are you plans for today? What about this evening?

An Interview with Tania of What Would A Nerd Wear

11.09.10

Today I have a lovely interview with Tania of the What Would A Nerd Wear blog. Tania is a fashionable grad student with an eye for fashion, and a love of layering. Enjoy her interview!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.

-I’m a grad student in British literature, and I go to a university in the midwest where it’s ridiculously cold in the winter.

2. I recently read that you celebrated your one year blogging anniversary! Congrats! How did you get interested in blogging in the first place?

-Thanks! I decided to start a blog after spending (and enjoying) some time reading other blogs. It seemed like an interesting creative outlet, a way to hone (and develop) my personal style, and do a little writing for fun. And then it was sort of spontaneous–I just started it and off I went!

3. You have wonderful style, and I’m pretty sure you’re the queen of layering. Can you tell us about your personal style?

-Oh my goodness, thank you! Christopher will laugh at the “queen of layering” because he’s always making fun of how many layers I put on in the winter. I would describe my personal style as wearable and accessible, feminine, and pared-down. It’s always difficult to describe “personal style” especially because I’m not sure I can always pin it down. Sometimes I’m in the mood to look ultra-pretty; other times, to look a little ecletic; other times, comfort is my priority. So I try to dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable and put together for whatever situation I’m going into.

4. What does your daily routine look like?

-I wake up around 7:30, make coffee while my boyfriend wakes up (he is not at all a morning person and wakes up so slowly!), then get dressed and start working around 9. I teach a few days a week around noon and hold office hours and work on teaching and grading. Somewhere in the day, Christopher takes my pictures and I put up a post. In the late afternoon, I go to the gym, make dinner, and work some more after dinner. I’m a student, so my routine mostly revolves around how I can get more reading done 🙂

5. If you had to pick one outfit to wear for the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Eeeeps, I can’t pick! But if I had to, it would probably be my blue loft dress, which I’ve worn about a hundred and two times already.

6. I read that you’re a grad student, and a teacher. How do you balance teaching, school work,

grading, and blogging every day?

-I am an extremely efficient person. So I blog as efficiently as possible, and spend a lot of my day focusing seriously on reading and teaching.

7. What are your must have pieces for fall?

-I think scarves are always a must-have, especially because I’m always cold. But this fall, I’m also excited about orange–I bought an orange skirt and got an orange sweater and shirt for my birthday–they are pretty, dark oranges, not jumpsuit orange 🙂 And I really like long cardigans (I bought a gray one). And a good pair of corduroys is always good for the fall–plus they always go on sale.

8. What do you enjoy most about blogging?

-I love the inspiration it gives me, the relationships I’ve formed with other bloggers and readers, and the incentive it gives me to not get lazy and wear sweatpants to the library.

9. When you’re not blogging, or at school, what can you be found doing?

-Wait, what? There are other things besides school and blogging? If I’m not doing one of those two, I am outside running around, bicycling, or working out; or I am on skype with my sister, who lives in California.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?

What about someone that is looking to revamp their daily outfits?

-Aspiring fashion bloggers: good-quality photographs are the golden ticket. Revampers: start small, so you feel comfortable. Add something little to your outfits bit by bit.

Thanks so much Tania for doingthis lovely interview with me!

Don’t forget to check out Tania’s blog for some daily inspiration, and a little help if you’re lost in the layering department.

A Night in the City

11.08.10
Scott and I spent the entire evening Friday night in downtown Phoenix.
One of our first stops was a new coffee shop called Jobot.

I had the most delicious soy latte, one of the best I’ve had in a long time. I’m thinking that I’m already due for another one and might have to go back tomorrow on my lunch break to grab one.
After getting our coffee (Scott got a hot americano) we headed to the Grow-op where Scott is selling a few of his handmade lamps, and also wood burned wall hangings (ampersand and penguins on them, separately that is).
While at the Grow-op I completely forgot to take any photos of Scott’s items on display (bad girlfriend), but did remember to snap a photo of my friend Courtney’s necklace display.

After hanging out at the Grow-op for awhile we headed more toward the center of downtown to check out a local art gallery.
We ended our night with a walk to the opening of CityScape, a large shopping center in the heart of downtown that just had its grand opening, and grabbed a late dinner at Five Guys (it was packed in there).

Friday night was a pretty busy night, and the rest of the weekend Scott and I played it pretty low key. I did attend the Cookies, Coffee, and Crafts show at Bragg’s Pie Factory with Courtney, and grabbed coffee and tea afterwards at Copper Star Coffee. Saturday and Sunday evening were spent working on homework with Scott.
What did you do this weekend? Did your town have a First Friday Art Walk?

Indie Influence

11.06.10
Yesterday Scott and I spent almost the entire day in downtown. One of our many stops throughout the day (promise to share more about these stops later) was Stinkweeds Record Store. This local record shop has been around for ages, and is owned buy one of the coolest ladies in town.
Scott and I went to Stinkweeds to pick up our tickets for the Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin show, and also to see if they had the most recent Neon Trees album. Generally Stinkweeds is known to carry CD’s and records from almost any indie band you can think of. While there I realized that my outfit was supporting this indie influence (tweed mini-skirt and moccs? yes!), and figured it would be best to take a few shots in front of the exposed brick that lines the back side of the building.
Outfit:
Shirt: Target
Necklace: Vintage typewriter J charm (wish you could see it better)
Mini-skirt: Gap
Grey footless tights: c/o We Love Colors
Moccs: Minnetonkas
Outfit:
Sunglasses: Ray bans
Flannel: Levi’s
Jeans: Levi’s
Shoes: Lacoste
Both Scott and I have been going to Stinkweeds since we were in our teen years. It was always the place to get the best music, and to see amazing bands for free (remember all the great in-store shows they used to have PHX residents?).

Scott has a leather pouch that he wears every day. It generally holds his ipod, and sometimes other little things in the tiny pocket. Over a year ago he found it at a local Goodwill and the cashier gave it to him for free because there was no price on it. This pouch has become quite the conversation starter, and almost every day Scott gets asked about it.
The other day I picked up this new pair of moccs. I’ve had my previous pair for almost two years now and they were pretty worn out. To me, moccs are the most comfy pair of shoes you can wear, and generally I like to wear them with everything.
This pair of Lacoste shoes is one of Scott’s favorites. He got them for his birthday from me a few years ago, and has taken great care of them to keep them looking nice.

Also, I’ve found that I don’t smile in a lot of my photos. I’ve figured this is pretty much a sin since I went through months of headgear (oh yes, I said it), a year of braces, and eight years of wearing my retainer (I still wear it every night). Here’s to smiling more.

Do you have a favorite record shop in your area? What’s it like?

Caramel Apples for Halloween

11.05.10
“When going over to someones house always bring something sweet.”
Growing up my mother always told me this line, and always tried to instill in me that bringing some kind of treat over to someones house while you were their guest was the proper thing to do.
On Halloween Scott and I went to our to our friends’ Courtney and Sanford apartment for a little Halloween fun. Before we went over though, my mom and I made some quick and easy caramel apples for Scott and I to bring to the get together.

Did you make any Halloween treats this year?
