SPRINGFIELD, MO – DAY 1

06.13.16

Last Thursday morning, Scott and I hopped on a plane headed to Springfield, Missouri! Springfield is somewhere we’ve always wanted to visited, in big thanks to our friends over at A Beautiful Mess and the very active blogging/Instagram community in the area. So when the folks at the Springfield, Missouri Convention and Visitors Bureau reach out to us about visiting SGF, we immediately said yes! A few weeks later we arrived in MO and were greeted with a jam-packed itinerary and a whole group of new friends that were also along for the long weekend adventure — Stephanie, Jasmine (and her sweet husband, Marcus!), Kathy and Stefanie too! After spending four days in the midwest, I have so much to share — but today I thought I would start from the beginning of our trip and share a little bit of Springfield through our eyes, including our hotel, a local coffee shop, donuts and more!

The nice folks at the CVB were kind enough to put us up in the most beautiful hotel — Hotel Vandivort! I’ve been seeing peeks of this boutique hotel here and there on Instagram for months now, including through their now famous #HotelVandivortBathroomSelfie hashtag. Let me tell you, though, it’s even more gorgeous in person! With the original building being built in 1906 as a Masonic Temple, they spared no expense in bringing this four-story brick building back to life — Scott and I were particularly fond of the Frank Lloyd-esque details and all of the modern finishes!

After hopping off the plane, experiencing our first lemongrass foot treatment at Zen3 Spa and Bodyworks (which was so relaxing!), Scott and I got settled into our hotel room and took a few minutes to rest before heading out into downtown Springfield in search of coffee!

After scouring Instagram and asking a few friends where we could find the best iced coffee in Springfield, the answer seemed pretty clear — The Coffee Ethic! This sweet little shop was a short walk from our hotel and just around the corner from The Golden Girl Rum Club, so we knew we were in good company. Anyways, after having a pretty early morning to catch our flight, Scott and I were both in need of a little extra boost and The Coffee Ethic’s iced coffee didn’t disappoint. We enjoyed our drinks by the window and planned out our next adventure!

After sipping on our coffees in the air conditioning for a bit, we ventured out just around the corner to check out the GG — we had plans to head there a few nights later for dinner with our whole group, so we just peeked in for now and took a few photos by their rad wall art on the side of the building.

And to just sweetened up our afternoon that much more, Hurts Donut was right down the street and we couldn’t help but get our weekly donut fix in! We’ve both heard so much about this place and their speciality donuts, so we took our time and tried to make our decisions wisely — do we get the cereal killer donut with captain crunch on top, or the E.T. special? 😉

Ultimately, we got a box of three — captain crunch, salted caramel cheesecake and one that tasted just like a churro! We liked them all, but I think Scott’s favorite was the captain crunch and mine was the salted caramel cheesecake. We actually ended up coming back here on National Donut Day and got another four donuts — which were all just as yummy!

Once we finished our donuts, we made our way back to our room to freshen up a bit before our evening out at Millsap Farm for their weekly pizza club! I’ll be back soon to share more about our evening there, because it deserves a whole post in its own (it was such a unique and special place!). Also, I’m now so curious to know — have you ever been to Springfield, MO before? If so, what was your favorite place you visited there? – Chels xoxo

A huge thank you is in order to the Springfield, Missouri Convention & Visitors Bureau for sponsoring this post! Scott and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to visit their charming city together!

JUNE BLOOMS

06.08.16

And just like that, it’s June! It’s so crazy to think that half of the year has already passed on by — which means autumn is almost here (I kid, but really — I’m already so excited for fall!). If you follow me on Instagram, you might have saw that we kicked off the beginning of the month with a long, weekend trip to Springfield, Missouri. I’ll share more on our trip to SGF soon, but for now I’ll just say that we truly enjoyed our time together in the Midwest and can’t wait to go back again real soon! After arriving home Sunday afternoon, we jumped right back into our normal routine — grocery shopping, filling up our iced coffee growler at Peixoto and getting ready for another busy week ahead. We knew Monday morning would come bright and early, so we went to bed super early for us (8:30pm!) and then kicked off the new week with sleepy eyes and giant cups of iced coffee.

While we were away, we had our first 115+ degree day around here. We had such nice weather for much longer than usual this year, so we all knew it was coming — but man we were so excited to miss the bulk of it while out in Missouri. We were, however, greeted by a nice heat wave right as we stepped off the plane onto the tarmac (for reals — we flew out of the small airport in town!). Since getting back, we’ve both been adjusting to the heat and trying our best to remember to drink lots of water and stay out of the sun — which I failed at a bit yesterday. I took a short walk outside to get some lunch, and then another quick walk for a yummy paleta and sometime between the two I got a nice little sunburn on my shoulders. I burn so easily, so it’s no surprise — just not quite used to the sun being so harsh again! 🙂

Now that we’re back home for a couple of weeks, we’ve got big plans for finishing things up around the house and getting the last few boxes unpacked in our place. We still need to put some time and effort into our guest bedroom/office, but to be quite honest — I’m just not too sure what I want that space to look and feel like. Every area of our home as flowed through quite nicely so far, so I’m hoping that once we get working on this space that everything will come together pretty quickly and easily as well — fingers crossed! We also purchased the chair of our dreams today from West Elm because it was on super sale, and I’m very excited to bring it into our space (probably in the living room!).

We just finished up dinner (chicken, avocado and cauliflower rice), so I’m off to enjoy the rest of the evening. I think we’re gonna try and get a quick walk in, and then clean up a little bit before settling down for the evening. Talk soon, sweet friends!

MESS AMERICA WITH GOT2B

05.26.16

Hi friends! Today I wanted to share a passion of mine that I don’t chat about often enough on here — hair! Ya’ll may or may not know this about me, but I’m huge fan of all things hair. I’ve been obsessed since a very young age, in large thanks to my mom who is a licensed cosmetologist (and while she doesn’t practice anymore, she still works her magic on my locks). I used to rock edgy layers, red highlights and very side swept bangs back in my teen years, and while I still love the idea of changing up my do (think short, red and wavy), I’ve been rocking the long locks for 10+ years now and don’t see a drastic change in my near future (#longhairdontcare). That doesn’t mean I can’t rock what with I’ve got, though, and thanks to göt2b, I’ve been trying out a few fun hair products from their mess-merizing line that are helping me to achieve the perfect messy hairstyle — a mess-terpiece if you, will (haha)!

In honor of göt2b’s Mess America contest, I gave their mess-merizing PUTTY and SPRITZ a whirl to add texture and a whole lot of volume to my otherwise stick-straight hair!

After working the putty (which smells amazing!) into the roots and ends of my hair, I gave it all a good toss before grabbing my curling wand and adding in a few waves to bring in a little more volume and a bit more dimension to my soon-to-be messy do.

I finished the look off by running my fingers through my hair to separate the waves, and then used the mess-merizing SPRITZ to add even more texture and to set the whole style in place.

And there you have it — my quick and easy messy do that can rocked day or night and will add just the right amount of style and edge to any outfit you may be rocking! Don’t forget that you hair is one of your best accessories and it deserves just as much love and care, if not more, that your wardrobe does!

Don’t forget to participate in the Mess America contest by posting your own messy do on Instagram, tagging me over @chelseabirdd, along with the kind folks at @got2busa and using the hashtag #got2bMessAmerica. The grand prize winner will receive the trip of a lifetime to Berlin! For more information on the contest and for official rules, check out the Mess America website here!

I would to hear, what’s your go-to messy style that’s quick and easy for you to do, but makes you feel like a million bucks? After this style, a giant, messy top-knot is my go-to! Have a wonderful rest of your day, sweet friends! xo

Thanks to got2b for sponsoring this post!

MY MONDAY MORNING ROUTINE

05.23.16

On Monday’s I work from home, which is a huge blessing! I posted a little about my routine on Instagram earlier today, but I thought it would be fun to open up the conversation here. I start each Monday morning off bright and early as I send Scott off to work, then I get my coffee going and put on some tunes. From here, I get ready for the day and dive into full-on work mode with my three kitties by my side. My Friday’s generally look like this too, with a little side of weekend excitement sprung in there for good measure!

Here are a few of my Monday morning necessities —

-A giant iced coffee (the cold brew from Peixoto Coffee is my favorite)

– Comfy “work from home” wear, which includes Everlane linen t’s and Birkenstocks.

– Our Amazon Echo (it’s kind of hilarious to talk to this thing as you pick out music to play)

-A comfy place to work, which lately has been on our Article Modern Sven Sofa!

I would love to know what your morning routines look like — do you wake up early or snooze your alarm? Coffee or tea? Music or podcasts? I’m working hard to refine my morning routine and would love to hear your tips and tricks for helping to get your day started off on the right foot!

Have a great evening, sweet friends!

MAY FLOWERS

05.17.16

How is it already the 16th of May? I swear it was just my birthday and the weather was much, much cooler! Since then the temperatures have started to rise and we’ve officially had our first 100 degree day — not uncommon around here, but something I was hoping would hold off for a little while longer. The heat has brought us the most gorgeous blooms, though, and recently Scott and I discovered this gorgeous wall of the most unique and bright prink oleanders I’ve ever seen. Before I headed for New York (more on that later), we stopped by here to take in the sights and smells before these beauties wilt away.

Ever time the summer season rolls around, I feel myself being attracted to brighter colors and lighter clothing. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE chunky layers, scarves, plaids, boots and more, but right now i’m happy to be in shorts sleeves and summery hats. I’ve actually got my eyes on a few summery pieces to add to my wardrobe, like this hat from Gigi Pip and these Seychelles sandals. Oh, and a few more Everlane linen t-shirts because they’re my new favorite! Do you have any summery pieces that you’ve got your eye on for the season ahead? It’s basically summer here already with all of these sunny days and high temps — just a few more weeks until it’s official.

I seriously can’t get over how beautiful these flowers were! Their bushes were about 15 feet tall — all covered with these gorgeous blooms! If you’re in Chandler, there’s a gorgeous sight to see in downtown behind the old San Marcos Hotel.

Scott picked up this new State Forty Eight hat while we were at the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market a few weekends back! Ya’ll know we’re big fans of reppin’ our state pride, so this was an easy purchase. Plus, the owners are young entrepreneurs and doing rad things in PHX!

Scott always catches me grammin’, haha! Tonight we’re taking things easy — dinner at home, a walk with our pups and catching up Southern Charm! What are you up to this evening? Any favorite tv shows you want to share — I’m going to need a new one when SC wraps up for the season! — Chelsea xo

OUR TINY HOUSE – THE BARE BONES

05.10.16

Hello! Since my first post on our tiny home, our place has come pretty far — we now have flooring, electricity, running water, a sewer system and more, and we’re currently in the process of slowly moving in all of our things. Before I share the current state of our home, I wanted to kick it back to less than a month ago when our tiny home was freshly delivered and very bare bones. Looking back at these photos, it’s crazy to see how far we’ve come in just a couple of weeks — but I’m excited to share with you what our home looked liked fresh off truck. If you follow me on Snapchat (username — chelseabirdd) you might have seen the grand tour I gave, but in case you missed it, here’s our home, bare bones.

That very top photo is the view from outside of our house when our “yard” was dug up and being prepped to have all of our utilities installed. Scott did almost all of the digging himself, which was no easy feat. The other two photos are of the very front area of our house where the living room/dining room/kitchen is. You can see that the floors are bare and I still hadn’t taken down the ugly curtains it came with (we swore we didn’t need them, but the home builder insisted, haha).

Our kitchen was pretty complete, aside from missing all of the appliances — which we opted to leave out so we can buy the ones that we really wanted. We chose the cabinet colors and the countertops when we were in the early stages of designing our home. We felt the dark wood looked modern, and the countertop was the closet thing we could get to a bright white and marble like pattern — down the road we might paint the cabinets, or trade out the counter for something that feels more us (all white, pretty please!).

This is the view just to the right of the above photo, which shows you our mini pantry and the hallway to the back of the house. Again, bare floors and ugly curtains hanging — along with the air conditioning cover that we had taken off after realizing that the air conditioner itself was the noisiest thing on the planet (which the home builder didn’t tell us about, sadly). We quickly decided to upgrade our unit and have it moved outside. There’s still a vent at the bottom where the unit used to be, but now we have a bonus space that we’re planning on turning into an open shelving cabinet — we’ll take all of the storage we can get!

Here’s a peak into our bathroom, which we opted to leave the laminate flooring in, as it would hold up to the moisture in the room much better. The shower and toilet are full size, which is so nice! We also have a medicine cabinet on the wall to the right, and a towel rack just behind the door.

Oh hey! This is the face of a gal that is sweating her butt off (because we didn’t have air yet), but is still SO, SO happy! Guys, we’re home owners! This all still feels slightly surreal, but in the best possible way!

We have this odd, but handy linen closet right outside of the bathroom — it has three different cupboards and so far it has been the perfect spot to house our extra towels, linens and my makeup collection. It still feels a bit odd to have to go out of the bathroom to grab my makeup or a spare washcloth, but like I said — we’ll take all the storage we can get!

Here’s a quick peek into our office/spare bedroom — bare floors, four white walls and a nice big window! When we first started talking about purchasing a tiny house, a second room was not in the picture. As we started weighing the pros and cons, including the price, how long we see ourselves living in our home, and the possibility of having a family one day, it made most sense to include a second room that would give us a little extra breathing room incase we need it one day.

And here’s our “laundry room” aka the hallway leading into our bedroom where our washer and dryer now live. I don’t love having our washer and dryer out in the open, but we have big plans to spruce up this space and it make pretty and functional all in one.

Here’s the view from our bedroom looking into the hallway and the opposite end of the house, with the “laundry room” on the left and the bathroom on the right.

Our bedroom has a full-size closet, which I’m so thankful for! It’s pretty tall, so we’ve been working on adding in more storage that will house our shoes, my purses and everything in-between.

The floors of our bedroom were also bare, but they did have a bit of the bathroom flooring covering it — which was an odd sight to find when we first walked in. Scott has since cut out the bit of laminate tile and covered it with wood flooring (laminate too, but it’s hand scraped and beautiful!).

One more peek into our dining room/living room/kitchen all in one. As we started to get to work and spend more time in the house, we realized we didn’t have anywhere to sit — so all of the chairs came in, along with a fan to keep the breeze flowing. I remember thinking at this point that our house was going to take forever to come together, but much to my surprise — the process has been quick and we’re feeling more at home each and every day. I’ve been sharing a few peeks here and there on Instagram if you’re curious about the current state of the room above and our bedroom (my favorite spaces to photograph thus far). This week our Article Modern couch (formerly Bryght) is being delivered and I am SO excited! We ordered it right after we signed the papers on our house and I’ve been waiting ever so (im)patiently for it to get here!

With all of this said, thank you so much to everyone who has wished us well and celebrated in our excitement of our new tiny house! I look forward to sharing many more updates, and will take any and all storage tips and tricks you might have! Have a great evening, sweet friends!

– Chelsea (& Scott too) xoxo

28 IN MAY

05.05.16

Happy May, sweet friends! May is my birth month and has always been my favorite month of the year (aside from October and January, of course) — my birthday, springing into summer, iced coffee and linen dress season and more are all the good things that come along with the month of May. The last few days have been quite eventful around here, but mostly because we celebrated my 28th birthday on the 2nd! It’s still crazy for me to believe that I’m actually 28th (wasn’t I just 18 and graduating high school?)! I don’t have a fear of getting older, it’s just nuts to think that I’m 10 years away from when Scott and I first met, and also the age my mom was right after she had me. So nuts to think about! Anyways, I had a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends leading up to my special day and on the day of — dinner at Liberty Market is always our go-to. This year Scott had a special GF cake made for me at Liberty, which was more like a lemon meringue tart and was incredible. We still have a few pieces in our fridge that I’ve been munching on after dinner every night — I seriously need to see if they’ll give me the recipe!

I’ve been a little more quiet on here than I would like, but thus is life and this busy season we’re in. I have a feeling things will only ramp up over the summer, but I’m trying my best to soak in every second of relaxation that I can — aside from now where I’m up at 6:30am writing this post because I just can’t handle not chatting with you guys any longer, haha. I’ve got an iced coffee next to me, and two sleeping puppies at my feet — so really, it’s not too bad of a situation!

Lately, Scott and I have been spending most of our free time working on our house. We’re still getting things moved in and unpacked, but it’s coming along. I’ve been meaning to post an update, which I’m hoping will be my next post — you’ll get to see our home bare bones. Looking back, we’ve made a ton of progress and I’m very happy with how everything is coming together. Scott did an amazing job on our floors — I’m loving the dark contrast of the wood with our white walls. We’re still waiting for our Article Modern (formerly Bryght) Sven couch to arrive, but we’ve got a living room full of chairs and furniture that’s just waiting for that last piece to pull it all together — well, that and maybe a larger rug! Rugs have been the hardest things for me to decide on. I need runners and a giant area rug, so if you have any suggestions, please send them my way!

This weekend is already shaping up to be a good one — Scott and I are going to the Junk in the Trunk Vintage market on Saturday, which only happens twice a year in the fall and spring, so I’m very excited to go there this time around with treasures in mind to buy for our new home. We’re also going to a dinner party at our friend Josh and Sarah’s house, and I’ve got plans to clean, unpack and get organized before I head out on a quick, but very exciting work trip next week! What do you have planned for the weekend? If you’re in the Phoenix area, let me know if you’ll be going to Junk in the Trunk or will have a booth there — I’ve got my heart set on a vintage dresser, entry table and bench — so fingers crossed! Have a lovely day, friends! Chelsea xo

APRIL DAYS

04.26.16

Hello! It feels good to be back here so soon — I’ve missed talking with you guys on the regular, so I’m back tonight to be a bit chatty and share a favorite outfit. Red has always been my color, in fact — I had this red Hellogoodbye zip-up hoodie that I wore all too often in high school and it was just about my favorite thing. Today, the hoodie is tucked away, but my love for red still shines through my almost monochromatic wardrobe. Red has a way of making me feel pulled together with an added zing. Do you guys have a color like that? I have a feeling we all do — whether it’s red, orange, blue or green, there always seems to be that one color that just livens and brightens things up — even on a dull day.

Today felt very much like a Monday, but hey — we all have those days, right? Scott and I did have our new washer and dryer delivered (which was so exciting!), and we purchased a new rug and matching pillow for our bedroom. It’s kind of silly the things that excitement me today — if you would have told 18 year old Chelsea that she would be getting stoked on pillows and rugs, she would have told you that you were crazy, but my how things have changed. My birthday is a week from today, so I guess birthday week has begun? Here’s to extra iced coffees, pre-birthday celebrations and buying all the home decor pieces I can get my hands on, haha. Have a great week, friends!

THE DESERT GREENHOUSE

04.24.16

Happy Saturday! I’m currently taking a little break after running errands and moving things into our tiny home all day. Things are coming along nicely around here — Scott is over half way down with laying our flooring, and our cabinets are starting to fill up with yummy food, dishes and our coffee equipment, of course. In the interim, we’ve been shopping for bits and bobbins that will make our home complete — new bedding, light fixtures and a little greenery to help even more brighten the space. We recently stopped in at The Farm At South Mountain after spotting their cactus greenhouse online.

I had read that the greenhouse isn’t always open, as it’s owned separately, but we were lucky enough to have it be open on the day we went. The two ladies running the open house shared that nothing was, sadly, for sale and that the owner really just a collector and kept the space as a hobby. While I was a bit sad to walk away empty handed, as they had some amazing pieces of greenery, it was so neat just to walk through and see every odd looking cactus and succulent in there.

On a side note, in a little over a week I’ll be turning 28. I find it so funny that the photo above looks so much like 18 year old Chelsea (my forever age) and to think about how much I haven’t changed. I still love loud music, coffee and wearing my hair with a side swept part. I do, however, feel wiser than I once was, having gone through 10 more years of life. I guess that’s just what you get with more time, though — so here’s to being even more wise in my 28th year (and to hoping that my love for old skool punk music never changes — haha).

The sweetest lady snapped the photo above of us — here we are, almost 10 years later and still up to the same shenanigans — sipping on coffee and going on adventures together. Except now we’re married and have a tiny house to call our home — something I couldn’t be more grateful for. Thank you to everyone who congratulations on our big news! We couldn’t be more grateful for your kind words and love & support. Now, go enjoy the rest of your weekend!

WE BOUGHT A TINY HOUSE!

04.14.16

Scott and I are so excited to share that we bought a tiny house! We’ve been dreaming and planning for this for years now, and today is the day that our new home was finally delivered! I’ve been hinting here and there that we had something big and exciting in the works, and we’re just thrilled to finally be able to share our good news with you!

We thought it would be fun to answer a few questions upfront that we thought might come up, so here’s a few of our thoughts —

How big is your tiny house? Well, it’s actually just under 800 square feet! While a typical tiny home is just under 400 square feet, our home was built in the same way that a tiny home would be, so we feel comfortable calling it our tiny (or extra small) home.

Are you moving? No! For almost the last four years, Scott and I have lived on my family’s 10 acre property in Chandler and we’ll be placing our new home on a small portion of the property. Call us crazy, but we love it here and really enjoying being so close to both of our families (mine within walking distance when they’re home, and his just a few miles away).

Why did you buy a tiny house? Well, we were ready to take the leap into a place we could call our very own, but weren’t ready to commit to a fully fledge home and all that comes along with it (price point, location, and space we really don’t need).

How long did it take to have your tiny house built? We signed the paperwork in mid-February, and the construction on it started soon afterward. In all, it took a little over 6 weeks from start to finish!

Now that our new home has been delivered (at 6:30am this morning!), we’re so excited to dig in and make this place our very own (and share all about the process along the way). Since today is Day 1 with our new home, Scott, a few family members and our delivery/placement guy are working on getting the basics up and running — power, water and sewer. Our hope is to get all of this worked out today, tomorrow and over the weekend, which is when our air conditioner will be installed. Once all of these essentials are good to go, we’ll start laying our new faux hardwood floor down, as we opted to leave any kind of real flooring out (except for in the bathroom, which we had laminate tiling installed in for the time being) so we could put in the exact kind we wanted.

Scott and I are absolutely thrilled about this new adventure, and can’t wait to share the process of turning our new house into a home with you all! I’ll be sharing sneak peeks of our new place on Instagram, through our home hashtag — #TheApplebyHome, and on Snapchat (username — chelseabirdd), and would love to have you follow along!

Until our next update, thank you all SO much for your love and support!

Love, Chelsea and Scott xo
