ICED COFFEE SEASON

04.07.16

It’s that time of year again where it’s seasonally appropriate to drink tons of iced coffee and keep your fridge fully stocked with a growler filled with your favorite brew! If I’m being real, though, it’s basically ICS all year long here in Phoenix, but now that it’s getting warmer in other places throughout the country, I feel better about spilling the beans about my iced coffee addiction here again (rather than just keeping it secret via Instagram, haha!). For the past few months, Scott and I have been filling our Peixoto Coffee growler once a week with their classic iced coffee and it has seriously been a life saver most (read — all) mornings when we’re not feeling hot coffee and don’t have time to stop and grab an iced one on our way to work. If you’re local, you seriously need one of these growlers in your life (they fill them with iced tea too!), and if you’re not — I would demand that your fav local coffee shop make this a thing for you, ASAP! ๐Ÿ˜‰

How it is already Thursday? This week, like the past few months, has just been zooming on by. Scott and I have been rotating our nights by either spending time at home, or going out to run errands and see friends along the way. Two of our closest friends, Nadi and Ernest, recently launched their own t-shirt small business, Mom Shirt Co.,  and they’ve just been killing it lately! We helped them stuff a few of their orders there other night over Sodalicious drinks, and I feel like I just can’t truly express how excited and thrilled I am for them! They deserve this more than anyone, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them in the months to come!

Speaking of local and small businesses, how cute are these enamel pins from Hello Apparel/Bermuda Press? The “Simple Girl, Simple Needs” one is obviously my favorite!

I hope ya’ll are having a wonderful Thursday! Also, let me know what your favorite warm weather drink is — whether it’s iced coffee, iced tea or something different, I would love to know!

A SPRING BREEZE

04.05.16

And then it was April? Seriously, where has this year gone? It felt like just yesterday it was January 1st and I was shivering in my boots and lots of layers, now the days are longer and warmer — and a little bit windy, as of lately. Scott and I kicked off this new month with a road trip down to Southern Arizona for a long weekend to spend some time with my family and take in the sights (and snacks) at the local fair. Before we headed out for the weekend, we took a little walk around the orchard to see everything in bloom. While our spring season never seems to last long, the green trees and blooms we do have are something special — like I said, spring is turning into my (second) favorite season.

I’ve got big plans for this week — well, big plans as in do our laundry, clean and get back on track after a very busy month. Things are set to pick back up here again very soon, but until then I’ll be soaking in all of the home time I can, well, that and watching my guilty pleasure show that just started a new season — Southern Charm, haha!

Before I go, I want to say how thankful I am to be back blogging and on a fresh, brand new site. I felt a bit off and unbalanced during my time not blogging this past month, which looking back — was probably the best during all of the busyness that was going on. I’m very happy to be back, though, and look forward to sharing lots during this new and fresh season! Have a great week, sweet friends!

THE CARLSBAD FLOWER FIELDS

04.01.16

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have saw that I took a last minute trip last week for work to Southern California. I got there late Wednesday evening, stayed with my best friend, Courtney, in Encinitas for the night, and then hightailed it to nearby Carlsbad for a four-day event that was being held at a local golf course. While I spent most of my days there on the green, I was very fortunate to be able to do and see a few very special things while in the golden state — like head down to the Beverly Hills BHLDN with Courtney where she said, “YES,” to her wedding dress (which was an incredibly special and ugly cry kind of moment!)! Since I can’t really show you any pictures from that trip (top secret until her wedding in October!), I wanted to show you the amazing Carlsbad Flower Fields that Scott and I went to after he made his way into town for the weekend!

During the week before my whirlwind trip, I had started to see photos pop up of this gorgeous place on Instagram — somewhere that I never thought I would end up just a few days later. The Carlsbad Flower Fields are the result of over 85 years of floral cultivation that began when Luther Gage, an early settler, brought Ranunculus seeds to the area and began growing them in his fields near the ocean. Today, there are nearly fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus that bloom for approx. six to eight weeks each year, starting at the beginning of March and going until early May. This annual burst of color, which has become a huge part of the areaโ€™s local heritage, is said to be one of natureโ€™s official ways of announcing the arrival of spring in Southern California!

Once we entered the fields, there were rows and rows of ranunculus — truthfully, they were as far as the eye could see. Most them were divided by color — purple, red, pink, orange, white, and then there were mixed rows of shades that complemented one another. My favorite mixed bunched look liked a bunch of autumn leaves at their very peak!

We spent some time walking up down all the different rows and shades of ranunculus and finally stopped here — among many shades of pink that just seemed to make my heart flutter. I’m not usually a very pink kind of lady, if you know what I mean, but this bunch just spoke to me! They were too beautiful to ignore.

As we made our last loop around the fields, the sweetest lady asked us if we would like a photo together — and of course, we said yes! It was the perfect way to end our time at the flower fields, and will now be the photo that I show our future kids and grandkids one day — hopefully we can bring them all there to take in this beauty together!

We ended our evening at a local beach, taking in the waves and letting the sand squish between our toes. I’ll save those photos for another day, though! In the meantime, I’ll be posting over on Instagram about the road trip that we’re currently on! We’re spending the weekend in Southern Arizona with some of my family, and I foresee lots of yummy treats and fun at the local fair in our very near future. Happy weekend, friends!

WELCOME TO CHELSEA BIRD

03.30.16

Welcome to Chelsea Bird, friends! This transition has been a long time coming and I’m absolutely stoked that it’s finally complete. If you’re here, you’ve probably heard my story before, but just in case — I started this blog back in June of 2009 as a way to keep in touch with my then boyfriend (now husband!) while spending the summer apart. I had always been a writer and blogger of sorts, leaving my beloved LiveJournal and Xanga to start fresh and share bits of my daily life here — mostly for Scott to read and see, but also for a few other bloggers that I later connected with that same summer (hey, Rachel Denbow and & Elsie Larson!). From here, the summer came and went, and here I am — almost 7 years later and still sharing bits about our life, my personal style, our travels, coffee and much more. This blog has seen me through so many years of growth, change and utter delight, and I can’t image life without it.

With that said, I’m thrilled to introduce to you my new and approved blog, lovingly called Chelsea Bird. Ok — so now you may be wondering if that means I’ll be leaving the name Tea Talk behind? To answer that — yes, yes it does. However, Tea Talk will always hold a special place in my heart, and when it comes down to it — I’ve always been Chelsea Bird.

A huge thank you is also in order for Chelcey Tate who took my vision for a fresh design and ran with it! Chelcey also designed my new logo, which I’m in love with, and was incredibly encouraging through every step of the way. You may noticed a few different things around here, like the lifestyle and travel sections linked at the top, along with a new shop tab where you can see/shop my favorite products + recently featured items from my daily wardrobe. Aside from that, I’m still the same old Chelsea — just with a fresh new do!

As always, thank you all so much of your love and continual support! I’m so excited for this next chapter of the blog.

THE NORMAL DINER

03.09.16

Hello! It’s Tuesday evening and I’m just sitting down to watch my favorite show — Fixer Upper! I’ve had a few long, but amazing couple days over here (from Phoenix, to San Fran, Napa and back again), and I’m already missing the hustle and bustle of one of my most favorite cities. It rained almost the entire time I was in Northern California, so I didn’t get to snap as many photos with my “real” camera as I had hoped, but I did get some great shots on my iPhone and a few on my DSLR that I’m excited to share soon. In the meantime, the weekend before I headed to the City, Scott and I skipped our usual brunch spot and headed down to The Normal Diner in Tempe for some Sunday breakfast and a little time in the sun on such a beautiful day!

The Normal Diner has a bit of a funny past, despite calling themselves “normal” — up until a few years ago this spot was an IHOP attached to an old and outdated hotel that catered to visiting parents of ASU dorm-living kids. The entire thing was painted an icky, peachy pink and — anyways, back to the point — a couple years ago they closed down the hotel and restaurant and completely re-did them both. Today, both the restaurant and hotel (the Graduate Hotel) are super cool and very Mid-Century Modern in design. The restaurant is open to the public, and is a super sweet spot for Sunday brunch (not very busy there, either!).

Our brunch was delicious, and Scott may have dowsed his in hot sauce (as he usually does!). After filling up on omelettes, potato mashes and lots of black coffee, we headed out to snap a few photos in from of their now iconic coffee wall (and sip on more coffee in the process).

While it’s been feeling like spring around here for a couple of weeks now, the past few days have felt like an Arizona winter all over again — chilly, breezy and a little rainy too. I know that it will be warming up in a few days, though, so I’m trying to savor it while I can.

The next few days are going to be pretty busy around here, but all good things — another exciting event with work and a few fun projects to complete together. I’ve been keeping a honey-do list for Scott lately, and it keeps getting longer and longer — a want him to build a bench for in front of our bed, a mini hanging ladder, a skinny entry table and more. I have a feeling he’s going to be busy this spring, ha! I’m been kind of obsessed with home decor lately, in fact, I’ve been pinning like crazy to my Home Sweet Home board! Ok — be back soon, friends! Have a great week! xoxo

WINTER FARMER’S MARKET

03.03.16

Heading to our local farmer’s market is my favorite way to spend a Saturday morning, especially in the fall and winter months. There are tons of different markets in the greater Phoenix area, but our very favorite is the one in downtown Gilbert. On most Saturday mornings, Scott, my mom and I all try our very best to get down to the market around 9:30am to pick up veggies, the occasional plant or bunch of flowers, and usually an iced coffee (or two!) together. Going to local farmer’s markets was something that my mom and I always did growing up together, so I love that we all get to experience this weekly routine together as a family now.

Now that the spring and summer months are almost upon us, our farmer’s market trips may start to dwindle, but I will always love getting up early to soak in the sights, sounds and tastes of our local market — especially those Proof Bread chocolate croissants that I desperately miss eating (GF since October!). In other news, not too much has been going on around here — Scott and I both have had pretty busy weeks at work, and during the evenings we’ve been doing our best to make dinner at home and go on a nice two mile walk in our neighborhood before hitting the hay. I haven’t been sleeping great lately, so I’ve been watching a lot of late-night home improvement tv shows (Fixer Upper & Rehab Addict are my favs) and also drinking more and more coffee to combat those tired mornings. On Friday I’m headed to San Francisco for a work trip, so I’m excited to be heading back to one of my most favorite cities — the one where Scott and I spent our honeymoon, that is. ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you have a local market that you love checking out on the weekends? If you’re local to the PHX area, let me know your favorite market and which vendors to visit!

OUR NASHVILLE GETAWAY: PART IV

03.01.16

You didn’t think I had forgotten about sharing the rest of your trip to Music City? Truth be told, I just need a little break and wanted to show you more of what’s been happening around here lately. However, I’m happy to be back and sharing more of our trip and a particularly favorite day we had while around Nashville. Like any good tourist, we couldn’t pass up the chance to check out the world famous Loveless Cafe — so on a dreary and rainy day, we headed up and down a very windy road (we accidentally took the wrong route through the country) and made our way to Loveless for breakfast.

There was a bit of wait when we pulled up, so we put our name down and headed toward the gift shop for a little perusing while we waited. We ended up picking up a couple of cheesy souvenirs (my favorite kind!), and then made our way to the cafe when our buzzer starting ringing.

The biscuits are a staple at Loveless, of course, so we shared a batch pre-breakfast, and then Scott had a biscuit sampler for his meal. The food was true Southern style and the atmosphere was fun — now we can say we’ve been to the Loveless Cafe, hot biscuits and all.

After finishing up at Loveless, we made the drive out to Franklin, TN — a charming town not that far outside of Nashville that everyone had told us to visit. Franklin had been on our radar for many years now, and after having friends live out there and talk about all of the charming shops and quaint coffee shops, Scott and I knew we needed to venture outside of the big city and give Franklin a visit. After parking our car and taking a little stroll down their darling main street, Scott snapped the above photo of me while we we’re poking around their local Anthropologie — it turned out to be one of my favorite photos from our whole trip.

And here’s the view I was taking in!

We heard great things about Gray’s, but since were both still stuffed from Loveless we decided to pass this time — it’ll definitely be on our list for next time, though! ๐Ÿ™‚

White’s Mercantile was one of our favorite stops while on 12 South, so we were excited to visit their new location in Franklin — which was equally beautiful! I swear I could have taken the whole store home with me.

After finishing up at White’s, we wandered around downtown Franklin a little more, stopped in at a few more shops and picked up some hot coffees at Frothy Monkey.

We made one more stop during our time in Franklin, but I’ll save that for another post! I’m already itching for another getaway — good thing I’m headed to San Francisco this weekend! It may be for a work trip, but I can’t wait to show you all what I’ll be up to on Instagram (and Snapchat — @chelseabirdd). Be back soon, friends!

WORTH TAKEAWAY

02.23.16

When a new, local restaurant pops up in our neighborhood, Scott and I always make it our mission to try it out as soon as their doors open. In this case, we had even more of a reason to make our way down to Worth Takeaway, a sandwich shop that just opened up in the heart of downtown Mesa, because two of our sweet friends, Kelsey and Jim Bob, are the masterminds behind this delicious takeaway spot! So during their first weekend in business, Scott and I stopped in for lunch and a little Southern-style banana pudding — mmmm!

When we walked in, the place was packed — which is pretty thrilling to see for a newly opened, local business! After placing our order (Scott got the Rueben and I got the Veggie), we snagged a couple of seats along the high-top table and took in the scenery. Kelsey and Jim Bob did an awesome job of re-vamping the old building — keeping things simple, but adding a few bits and pieces that felt so very Southwestern (like the concrete cactus and framed, desert house prints). They also did an amazing job of incorporating so many other local businesses into their space, whether it’s through their product, furniture or even the flowers on their tables. With an overall goal of creating community, Worth Takeaway is surely on their way!

Both of our meals were delicious — Scott loved the Rueben, and I really enjoyed the Veggie on lettuce (for all of us GF folks out there!). I also hear that their grilled cheese is amazing, and that their crispy chicken is out of this world! For dessert, we shared their house made banana pudding and it was incredible! Jim Bob is originally from the south, so it only made sense that he brought a little of his hometown cultural into their desert-based shop.

The next time you’re in Mesa, don’t forget to stop in at Worth Takeaway for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Scott and I have plans to head back soon, so maybe we’ll see a few of you local folks there!

Can we also just take a second to talk about this amazing weather we’ve been having? I’ve been pulling out my sandals and putting away my sweaters. Opting for short sleeves most days, and enjoying some time sitting in the sun. Spring is going to officially be here before we know it and it’s going to be a BIG season for Scott and I — mini-getaways, celebrations and new adventures, together. Can’t wait to share more soon, sweet friends!

ROSEY & PINK

02.16.16

February just has that way of making me crave rosey hues and some brighter colors. It may be because it was over 80 degrees today in Phoenix, but I’m trying to forget that and just focus on the fact that winter is still here for another few weeks, at least. Aside from that, February has really been treating us quite nicely– beautiful weather, weekends together, working on our garden and celebrating our love.

This pinky-toned wall has been calling my name lately, but since I’m still rocking the dark tones (who am I kidding — I tend to rock them all year long) — I figured I would try and bring a little contrast to the situation and pair it with an outfit that has been on rotation lately, which include these beautiful Seychelle booties that I’ve been obsessing over. I’ve got my eye on these pretties from Seychelles next, but have a feeling sandals (like these!) would be more appropriate.

I hope ya’ll had a lovely Valentine’s Day with your family, friends or your special somebody! Scott and I did a little bit of celebrating all weekend — a dinner date, adventures in our old neighborhood in Mesa and brunch at our favorite place. This was our 10th Valentine’s Day spent together, and I have to say — each year together just gets better and better.

Before I go, I wanted to share a favorite V-Day post from my sweet friend, Nicole — doesn’t she look amazing in those shoes and her fluffy jacket? YES!

So tell me, how did you celebrate your day of love?

CITRUS SEASON

02.10.16

When the winter months are beginning to come to a close, and the spring season feels like it’s almost here, there’s nothing I look forward to more than when citrus season begins and lemons, oranges, grapefruit and more are ripe for the picking. Growing up in an area where citrus trees were always in an abundance (weird, I know — but citrus farms were huge here in the desert), I kind of took picking a fresh orange straight off the tree for granted. Today, citrus farms are few and far between (well, at least on our side of town), so when the farm at

Agritopia

opens up their citrus orchards for the picking, you know that I’m there on opening day!

A few weekends ago, Scott and I jumped in the car and headed to Agritopia for a morning of hunting for the most perfect oranges, lemons, and grapefruit (because truly, that’s a thing!). We looked and looked so more, squeezed a few grapefruits here and there, and then did our best to only the pick the fruit that was truly ready to come off the trees. It almost felt like a game, but I think we came away with a pretty perfect bag of the best citrus around.

Do you see those cherry blossoms? They were just barely coming into bloom the day we were at the orchard, but boy were they beautiful!

I have to say, we were a little rusty on our citrus juggling skills, but I think you get the picture, haha. Also, these photos were too fun to take! Oftentimes, I consider myself a pretty serious person, but truthfully, I’m just a kid at heart. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope this posts radiates some sunlight for all you folks still living through those dreary and snowy winter days. I would say that we’ve had a really mild winter this year, but I’m still hoping that we can getaway on a snowy day to northern Arizona so we can have at least one, true winters day. Other than hoping for a weekend getaway, Scott and I have been busy with the usual — work, playing with our kitties, avoiding dishes and getting ready for Valentine’s Day. Do you have any plans for the big day yet? We usually keep things pretty casual around here, but it’s always fun to plan and think up a few things we can do to celebrate — like go out to breakfast, have a coffee date, go citrus picking (!!!) or just stay home and snuggle while watching some Fixer Upper! Either of those options sound pretty good to me! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope ya’ll have a wonderful day!
