Now accepting sponsors for the month of September!

08.20.11

August has been a dream month. In the beginning of the month I flew home and ran into the arms of my amazing boyfriend (what a special moment that was). Since then I have spent so much time getting ready for grad school (which started this week!), meeting up with old and new friends, and exploring all my favorite spots in Phoenix with my love. It truly has been a great month!
I’m so excited for September because I will really be getting into the swing of school, and I’m hoping for cool weather in the coming days. September also means fall is on it’s way and I already can’t wait to drink a few pumpkin spice lattes! Here’s to a great month!
I would love to have you as a sponsor next month! It’s going to be a great one!

Phoenix Mini Meet-Up

08.20.11
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of meeting up with my BFF Courtney, of Phoenix is Haute, and also with Alex of Ave Styles at Lola Coffee in downtown Phoenix. Alex and I had been planning to meet-up since right after I left for Colorado, so finally getting to meet her for the first time was definitely a treat. She’s a sweet lady with an amazing style, and is all about sharing and building an amazing fashion and style community in Phoenix.

Courtney and Alex had been meaning to meet-up for awhile now as well, so it worked out perfectly that she had the morning off and could come chat with us. We all had a great talk about Phoenix fashion, as well as the fashion communities that we are surrounded by, and also about blogs and blogging (which is always so neat to do in person with other people that get what you’re really talking about).

Scott came along as well and snapped a few pictures during our chat. We all had really good coffee, and Scott, Alex, and I all had a piece of the most amazing quiche. It was such a good morning!
What was playing on the record player.

It was honestly such a treat to have such a lovely meet-up which such amazing ladies! We already have another meet-up planned, and I can’t wait to chat with them again and plan some amazing things for the coming months!

If you don’t already follow Alex or Courtney, you should definitely check out their blogs! They are some of the sweetest ladies in Phoenix!
Have you had any blogger meet-ups lately? Don’t you love chatting with others that really get blogging?

Urban Cookies V 4.0

08.19.11

Even before I got back home I knew that stopping at Urban Cookies was high on my priority list of things to do. Recently, Ollie Cake, which is one in the same with Urban Cookies, won a Cupcake Wars competition on The Food Network. I was SO excited when I heard they were going to be on the show. I watched and was SO proud when I heard that they had won the competition! It’s such a huge deal, and I just knew Scott and I had to go down and congratulate them in person!

This pretty new Ollie Cake sign is a new addition to the shop since I’ve been gone. It’s so darling!

Scott was so ready to go in and try out some cupcakes that he just couldn’t wait for me to get done taking photos, or maybe it was 108 outside and he just needed to go inside! Once I got inside I found the shop to be filled with all kinds of delicious cupcakes and cookies. It was SO hard to pick just one treat, but since they had one of their winning cupcakes for sale (peach corn cake, oh my!) Scott and I had to get that one. Did I mention how packed the shop was as well? I’ve never seen that many people in there at once! It made my heart swell to see all of these people coming out to support!
Oh my, these cupcakes had a delicious fruit topping, amazing frosting, and a yummy taragon shortcake on top! WOW! Best cupcake of my life!
Scott and I also may have gotten a cookie to share. They had my favorite dark chocolate and walnut cookie, so I really couldn’t pass it up! It was just as delicious as the cupcakes! I swear, they really can’t make a bad treat there!
Scott and I both really enjoyed our afternoon treat date to Urban Cookies, and will definitely being going back soon! Right now they have the famous campfire cupcake, that they won with as well, in the shop right now! It’s a cupcake baked in an orange! How amazing does that sound? I can’t wait to try it!
Man, it’s SO good to be home! I missed all of my favorite treat spots!
Have you ever been to Urban Cookies before? Did you see them win on Cupcake Wars?

Gilbert Coffee Date

08.18.11

Even though the highs in Phoenix are hovering around 108 this week, fall is completely on my mind. I’m so ready to give up summer and live in a fall state-of-mind. The other evening Scott and I headed to Liberty Market for some coffee and treats with a few of our sweet friends, so I felt like getting a little dressed up in some of my soon-to-be fall favorites.

To be honest, I felt really great in this outfit. I always feel that I dress the best for myself in the fall, and I think this outfit is just the start of a great fall outfit season. I felt so like myself in this lacey, oversized blouse from Shop Kempt, Levi’s skinny jeans, and my new Bicker Booties from Blowfish Shoes.
I’m only a little obsessed with the detail in this blouse. The lace collar is gorgeous, and the lace tucked away in the sleeves is like an extra surprise when you button them up.

I’m also completely obsessed with my these pretty booties. I’m a total boot/fall shoe person, and could wear these wedges all day love. I love the color of them, the wooden like wedge, and all of the buckles on the side. Ever since I got home I’ve been seeing buckles every where! I feel that they are going to be huge for fall!

This past week I’ve really enjoyed going on lots of fun adventures, meeting up with sweet friends, and chowing down on delicious coffee and food that you can only find in Phoenix. As of this week I am also officially a grad school student! I’m all kinds of nervous, but I really feel that I’m in the right place and choose the right field to study in (Communication Studies). Here’s to hoping I have a great semester and really love this program!

Scott also went back to school this week! My love is a design student and I am so proud of him! I just know he’s going to do great this year! I see many, many coffee shop homework dates in our near future!

Mesa Streets

08.17.11

Now that I’m back home I’m trying really hard to dress for the weather (so I don’t die of heat stroke, ya know), but I am finding this hard to accomplish. The other day I adorned a pair of boyfriend shorts and a tank top, but I just didn’t feel right, so of course I had to balance out the two with a cardigan. In all honesty, I may never be broken of my hard feelings toward shorts, but while the weather is still in the 100’s I’m going to try and wear them as any good Arizonian should (or at least the ones that want to stay cool).

I find comfort in layering, and being surrounded by the old downtown streets of Mesa. I swear this area has some of the best brick buildings in the whole Valley. I really missed coming down here while I was away.
Over the past few years downtown Mesa has really turned into quite the hip place. There are lots of cute shops, restaurants, and an amazing sweets shop down here now. A few months ago Urban Picnic opened up and I have yet to go there. After hearing rave reviews from Angela, and Lauren, I just know that Scott and I will love it. I’m thinking a lunch date there this week would be perfect!
On a different note, for awhile now I’ve been obsessing over first knuckle rings. For awhile I scoured Etsy and couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. That is, until I discovered Sarah’s shop. I recently received two first knuckle rings from her (sterling silver, and oxidized sterling) and I’m officially in love with them. They’re so darling! I kind of feel like I have Katie to blame for this obsession, because she has darling first knuckle rings!
This week is busy, busy with school starting, doctors appointments, and running around town. I wouldn’t change it for the world though. It’s so good to be home!

An interview with Courtney of Phoenix is Haute

08.16.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Courtney of Phoenix is Haute. Courtney is a bestie of mine, and one of the sweetest ladies I know. She has an eye for style, and a degree to show her dedication to it. She spends her days working for a mainstream boutique that many of us know and love, as well as spending time and going on adventures with her fiance, Sanford, and sweet pup, Kingsley. Courtney also sells neat necklaces made out of recycled bullet shells in her shop, Dolly & Boy Jewelry.

Meet Courtney:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello Tea Talkers!! I am just SO jazzed to be a guest of my online-turned-real-life friend, Chelseabird! Thank you so much for having me!! I’m Courtney, a FIDM grad, stylist, fashion merchandising teacher, jewelry designer, and blogger who loves classic movies, bright lipstick, surprises and laughing a lot! I live with my fiance and weenie dog pup in Phoenix, AZ!

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

A few years ago when I was Iiving in Los Angeles I did a lot of trend forecasting via websites and magazines for school and for the clothing manufacturer I worked for…I think Selective Potential and A Beautiful Mess were some of the first I stumbled upon through that. I was in awe!! How had I gone so long without knowing of these cool girls that would soon be a topic of conversation like I know them personally ( for example….OMG! The Beautiful Mess Wedding! OMG! Has Taza had her baby?! Is the rockstar a boy or a girl?!, OMG! Jane makes me feel so unaccomplished for my age! OMG! Can I just have Betty’s closet and Parisian lifestyle?! OMG! Miss James is the only reason I want to reproduce!”

How fun to peek into other people’s lives and closets a world away from us?? I have been totally and completely hooked ever since! I spent a couple years just lurking. 🙂 No comments or reaching out, just taking it all in. When we moved back to Phoenix last summer I wanted to connect and document my attempts at pursuing fashion in a secondary market thus Phoenix is Haute was born! Ta-da! After the AZ Blogger Meetup I decided I was going to really give my blog more love and dive in! Here we are!

3. Can you tell us about your style? Hmm…It’s hard to narrow that down! About 99 percent of the time you can bet on me not matching! That one thing is for sure! 😉 Ha! I would like to say “thrifty bohemian” sometimes a little bit Country, sometimes a little Rock and Roll, I love dressing up so a lot of times my outfits have a theme.

4. You’re a Phoenix Metropolitan area girl like myself! How do you handle dressing for the hot, hot heat that we have so many months out of the year?

Well the first week I moved here my mom told me “Honey, you’re gonna need to buy some shorts” hahaha Like you Chels I am such a layers kind of girl! I love blazers and scarves! So here, I need to wear light jersey cardigans and cotton scarves if I still want to layer it up! I may wear tanks and shorts or skirts but I will usually have 700 accessories on to amplify my AZ style!

5. What are your favorite trends for fall?

I am always the most excited for dressing for Fall! Even though Summer is always a sort of casual Friday! You can get away with wearing a bikini under most things… 😉 This Fall I am sooo excited for the color story! I am a Fall color palette all year round kind of girl so the Blushes, Pumpkins, and Burnt Corals were seeing a lot of are making my heart go pitter patter! I also really love all of the menswear- inspired geek- chic trends coming out! Still can’t put down the J. Crew rolled up chino pants with grandpa cardigans though! Luckily, here in Phoenix, we don’t really have to have a complete wardrobe revamp when it gets cooler- we can just modify our favorite looks to adjust to those brisk, 60 degree, Winter months! 😉

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

Ohh this is the part where I pretend I do many interesting and cool things…

I am usually hanging with my grandparents on the Westside of town, trying to meet up with my siblings here and there, scolding my cute puppy for peeing on the carpet, having coffee dates with friends, exploring more pockets of Phoenix with my handsome guy, and dreaming up lots of names for OPI nailpolishes (my dream job)! haha

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

Everywhere! Moreso than just blogs and fashion magazines, real life! I really like translating street style, and “real-girl” bloggers (read: attainable fashion!!) into my own wardrobe! I pick and choose trends and color stories I like and put my twist on it!

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

Hmmm as long as were dreaming here I am going to say my tallest wedges (because they would be the most comfortable shoes—this is my dream, right?!) probably skinny jeans, a racerback tank, pretty Ikat printed scarf, a great leather bag (naturally), and fitted blazer! SO specific I know buuttt we’re talkin’ forever here people!!

9. You have this amazingly versatile style! One day you can be dressed totally girly, and the next day you could be very rocker chic from head to toe. How do you go from one style to the next, and back again with such ease?

Well thank you so much friend! I guess going back to my love of costumes (I used to dance, I love classic musicals, and Halloween is my favorite holiday!) I like to follow trends yes, but at the end of the day I just like to remix designer pieces, with thrifted or vintage, and inexpensive retailers like Target and Forever 21! I sort of use that technique with my home and closet…a mix of high and low! Sometimes I am a little more tough, (love a good leather jacket!) and sometimes I feel a little more sweet, (can’t go wrong with a ditzy floral!)!

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers? What about for someone wanting to reach out of their style comfort zone, but is a little weary of it?

Well I suppose I am still “aspiring” really, but I guess the key is just finding what you love to write about and finding time to write about it! Obviously beautiful photos are a huge element (I’m still learning!), and being authentic is the most important thing. That’s what I really love about blogging, essentially we are all writing about the same thing (cute clothes, coffee, our significant others, etc.) but everyone has their unique way of telling their story, and that is what differentiates us from each other and makes reading a lot of similar blogs, so special!

Thank you so much for doing this interview, Courtney. Don’t forget to check out her lovely blog, and sweet necklace shop.

The Decemberists

08.15.11
Have I mentioned how amazing it is to be home? Well, it most certainly is! On Wednesday Scott and I went down to the Mesa Arts Center to see a show we’ve been waiting months for, The Decemberists! Scott and I have been fans of their music for quite some time now (I remember being introduced to Her Majesty in early high school days from a friend that was always in the know about the newest indie music), so we were so happy that they finally came to Phoenix (they usually skip us and go to Tucson) and that we were able to snag some amazing seats!
I wanted to wear something comfortable and a little warm to the show. The venue is inside, and from past experiences there I know that it can get very cold when they crank the air conditioner up. I also really love the jean on jean look, and thought it would be fun for the show.
Scott was such a good sport and took these photos for me. It’s honestly so nice to have my own personal photographer back! He told me he was a little rusty, but I am sure he will be back to his pro ways in no time. I am SO happy I don’t have to drag around that tripod anymore. I always got such weird looks from people when I was standing in front of the camera, snapping away photos of myself.
I’m also so happy that I’m able to look at this handsome face every day in real life again. I missed him so incredibly much while I was away. Can you believe we have been together almost five years? Where has the time gone?
Nowadays I’m kind of Instagram obsessed and now love making Scott my subject for every photo. He thinks I should be his though.
We were both really happy that the show was at the Mesa Arts Center. The venue is a beautiful, state-of-the-art theater that has nice chairs, good acoustics, and is always clean. I feel so lucky to have something like this in our town!

When Scott and I got to our seats we were shocked at our amazing view. We knew we were going to be up high, and at one point we thought our seats were elsewhere with minimal visibility of the stage, but once we got to our real seats we were in awh.

We sat on the very top balcony, all the way to the right on a corner that only holds two seats. We had no one sitting in front, behind, or to the side of us. I felt like we were in our own little private viewing box. It was honestly so perfect.

The Decemberists themselves were amazing. So full of energy and entertaining. We had a perfect birds eye view from our seats, and it was so nice to be able to see everything that was happening on the stage.

We had so much fun singing along and would definitely see them again. If you’re a Decemeberists fan and have never seen them live, I really recommend doing so. You won’t be disappointed!

Short Leash Lunch Date

08.13.11

Now that I’m home in Phoenix I have the opportunity to visit all of my favorite restaurants, coffee shops, stores, and mobile food trucks that I missed so much during my summer away. So since yesterday was Friday Scott and I knew that we had to go have lunch from our favorite mobile food truck, Short Leash Hotdogs.

Short Leash is our favorite because they have SO many awesome options for hot dogs/veggie dogs/bratwurst. You could seriously go there days, and days in a row and never eat the same thing! The owners are also so super nice, and we love supporting local businesses!

When we got to the food truck court the lines weren’t that long yet, but once were there for a few the people started piling in. It seriously makes my heart SO happy to see so many people coming out to support such a great local event!

For lunch I got a veggie dog with my favorite mango chutney, along with mushrooms, tomatoes, and ketchup, and a side of the best coleslaw I’ve ever eaten!
Scott got a bratwurst with chipotle cream cheese, bacon, and a few other sides that escape my mind, as well as a side of coleslaw.

We both really enjoyed our lunch and were so happy to be down at the food trucks. Being with my favorite guy, and surrounded by my favorite places seriously makes me so incredibly happy and thankful to be home!

I already can’t wait to share more of our adventures this day, as well as future days from now on. Phoenix, it’s so good to see you!
What are you up to today? Do you have food trucks in your city?
