Paonia, Co!

07.11.11

As many of you may know, last week Scott came to visit me in Colorado for the week. We spent six wonderful days driving around the western part of Colorado. At the end of the week we had drove over 1,000 miles! So throughout the next week or so I’m going to be sharing photos and stories from our week of traveling and going on adventures together!

The first town we visited was Paonia, CO, and since it was Scott’s first day here (and it was the 4th of July as well) we just hung out, walked around, took silly photos, kissed, and enjoyed being around one another. Paonia really is the prettiest town, so we had a nice time wandering down its tree-lined streets that afternoon.
We might have even fit a few outfit photos in while we were out on our stroll!

I was kind of obsessed with this alleyway, even though I was being eaten alive by ants.

Can you tell through these photos & my expressions how full my heart was? I certainly can! Being reunited with your love is honestly THE best feeling, and I was so happy to finally be together again.
Paonia has some of the most beautiful historic homes I have ever seen. It was so hard not to take a photo next to each and every one. Scott and I might have been a little camera happy as well this day (we didn’t mind one bit though).
This little blue house below was one of our favorites in the whole town!
Our walk lead us into the town’s tiny downtown area. The only thing open was the ice cream/soda shop, so we stopped in to drink Izze sodas and talk about our upcoming adventures.

After our short stop we took another little stroll, hand in hand, admiring all of the pretty old houses and talking about how thrilled we were to be together.
To say that I was happy this day would be a major understatement. I was ecstatic to be with Scott, and my whole world felt right again.

Have you and your significant other ever been separated for a long period of time? If so, how did you handle being apart?

Sacred Grounds

07.09.11
Scott and I are enjoying our last day together before he heads home to Phoenix! Here is a little post though on a coffee shop I once loved, but today I’m unsure of!

Years ago when I first started getting into coffee I was in Glenwood Springs and decided to go to Sacred Grounds. I instantly fell in love the cute shop and wanted to go every day to get a latte (my drink of choice at the time).

Well when I was in Glenwood this year I decided to stop in for old times sake.

The shop is fairly the same, however, things about it are just different these days. It has kind of lost it’s appeal to me, and feels more corporate than ever.

I remember when I first went I got an amazing brand muffin with chai flavored topping. It was so delicious, and I will probably never forget it.

This time around I was in need of some iced coffee and snack, so I decided to give the shop one last chance.
I was fairly dissapointed. The iced coffee was weak, and the pop over had icing on it (the ones I was looking at didn’t have it on them). I didn’t finish the iced coffee, and picked at the pop over. The rest of the week I went to Bluebird Cafe and I don’t think I will ever look back. Sorry, Sacred Grounds.
Has a favorite coffee shop of yours totally changed and you just can’t stand to go there anymore?

Summer Whites

07.08.11
I’ve heard that summer is for the color white. Well, white is ok with me all year round, but in the summer I feel like it’s extra appropriate. Especially when it comes in the form of a pretty tunic.

I purchased this tunic from Levi’s before I left home. It was on super sale, and I thought it would be perfect for those warm summer days.
I kind of love the little detail on the top, and the cute little slit sleeves.
Anyways, have you guys heard of Flourish yet? My friend Danielle of Sublime Lite, who I met in real life back in March when she attended the Arizona Blogger Meet Up, recently launched the Flourish leather shop where she sells the most amazing handmade leather bracelets. Danielle was so sweet and sent me two of her lovely bracelets, and I have to say, they have quickly become my favorite.
The quality of the bracelets are really great, and the fact that they’re handmade makes them that much more sweet. Did I mention that most of them are only $5?! They are the perfect summer accessory, and would be a great gift for a sweet friend! Check out all of the pretty color options right here.
Um, I kind of just left like flipping my hair. The results were this sweet photo. Sometimes you just need a little fun in your life, right?
Today Scott and I are out on an adventure. I can’t even tell you how nice it is not to be alone all of the time. I am so thankful for him, and I am SO happy to have him here with me.
All of these photos were taken before Scott’s arrival. This above photo pretty sums up how I felt before he got here. My heart is now full though, and I couldn’t be happier.

Here’s to adventures, lots of photos and iced coffee, and to spending time with the one you love most.

Polka Dots On The Dock

07.07.11
Blue and white together always give off the feeling of being very nautical to me, so when I was at the lake recently I thought it would be appropriate to sport something a little suiting to the scenery.
I purchased this dress before I left Arizona at Tj Maxx. Usually, I never find anything that I really like at Tj Maxx, but when I spotted this dress I just knew it was perfect. I love the capped sleeves, the polka dots, and the cinched waist. I think it’s a perfect summer dress, but could also transition well into the fall. Those are the kind of garments I am always looking out for. I love anything that can be multi-seasonal (ya know, because we really only have two seasons in Arizona).
Recently I was going through my childhood jewelry and spotted this pretty turquoise ring. I was given the ring as a birthday present when I was about twelve or thirteen. It really has been years since I wore it, but I thought it would be fun to take it out on a spin. I think it’s a nice reminder that I’ve always been ring obsessed. To me, rings truly are the perfect accessories!
So when we were in Delta I went to the lake almost day. Ever day that I went I hoped that I would be able to get some time in alone on this bridge. Well, that ended up being a much harder challenge that I thought.
The first day I went there, there was a group of kids jumping off of it and swimming in the lake. I figured it wouldn’t be best to interrupt their swimming and fun, so I picked another spot and hoped the next day it would be open. Well, the second day there was two little boys and their dad fishing off of the dock, and same for the third day. On the fourth day know one was there, except for a girl in her twenties that decided to watch me take photos. The staring was a bit awkward, but I was so happy to finally get my alone time on the talk I really didn’t even mind.
Today Scott and I are enjoying our time together. Some kind of adventure will be involved I’m sure. And lots of coffee and yummy food, of course. Be sure and check out my twitter page to see what we are up to today!

An interview with Megan of MeganNielson.com

07.06.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Megan of MeganNielson.com! Megan is an Aussie designer living in the US with her husband and two little ones. She designs the most amazing, feminine, feel-good kind of clothing (seriously, check out her collections here.), and is the sweetest lady.

Meet Megan:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-Hi there! My name is Megan Nielsen, but most people just call me Meg 🙂 I’m an Aussie designer, and I currently live in the USA near Washington DC with my wonderful hubby and our two adorable toddlers. I love my family, I love to laugh and I love creating sweet feminine clothing full of pretty details.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

-I started blogging in 2009. Since I was far away from my family and friends, I could no longer show them what I’d been making, and I craved a way to share my designs. That’s when I discovered blogs! I started my Design Diary as a way to catalogue and share all the things I created. I just loved blogging! I launched my clothing line in early 2010, and all of the support and encouragement I got through my blog was so wonderful.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-I always find it hard to describe my style!! But I think if pressed, I would describe it as feminine and nostalgic. I have an undying love of pretty details and vintage silhouettes – and I think above all I just like to dress like a woman.

4. You design, sew, and sell your very own clothes. How did you decide that you wanted to become a designer, and what has been the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in your designing career?

-Gosh, well I’d say in my heart of hearts I’ve wanted to be a designer since I was very young. I started designing my own clothing when I was around 11, and it has been my constant passion and obsession even while I pursued a different career. I have always created things for family and friends on the side, but I reached a real turning point almost 2 years ago. Through the exposure I got through my blog a lot of people started asking if they could buy my designs, and that’s when I decided to take the leap and launch my line. I’m so grateful for how successful it’s been, and how much support I’ve gotten from the blogging community. It’s really a dream come true for me!

With respect to obstacles – for me the biggest has always been finding the time to devote to my clothing line. Since I have 2 small children, I only get a few hours to work a day – which means I often work in the middle of the night. I released my first collection in 2010 when I was pregnant with my son, and I’ve got to say, being 7 months pregnant and working that hard was tough. But it’s also been so rewarding. I’m really grateful that I’m blessed to be able to look after my kids full time and still pursue my design career.

5. What are your favorite trends for summer?

-I am absolutely loving this summer! My favourite trends right now are crop tops and knife pleated skirts. I could wear those pieces over and over. But honestly, this is the first summer for a while that I’ve really loved a lot of trends, and I think it’s because I have such a soft spot for the 90’s!

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-When I’m not blogging you’ll find me either working on my designs, or running after my little darlings! I am a pretty busy person, so I’m normally running from one task to another.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

-Well when it comes to dressing myself, I get a lot of inspiration from my fellow bloggers – there are some insanely stylish ladies out there! I’ve actually stopped reading magazines because I’m so into reading blogs 🙂

When it comes to designing clothing – I draw most of my inspiration from nature, whether it be my hometown in Australia or the picturesque Virginia countryside where I live now. There’s just something about the outdoors that makes my heart pitter patter.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Oh gosh! I am such a sucker for a full skirt and a pretty blouse – so if I had to wear something for the rest of my life, it would be a pretty full skirt (probably in pink), and definitely high waisted, with a light weight peter pan collar blouse. Add in some sky high wedges and my favourite vintage Coach cross body bag, and I think I’d be quite satisfied!

9. What do you love most about designing and creating your own clothes?

-I really adore designing my own clothing! The thing I love the most is the individuality it brings. I love knowing that what I am wearing is totally unique, that no-one can find it. I’m also really fussy and often can’t find what I want in stores, so I love knowing that I can get exactly what I want. Imagination come to life 🙂

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring personal style bloggers? What about for someone interested in learning how to sew clothing, but doesn’t know where to start?

-For aspiring personal style bloggers, I’d say just start posting and have fun! Sometimes people take all this too seriously, but at the end of the day it’s just so fun being able to experiment with outfits and share them with the blogging community.

For those who want to learn to sew, I think the best way to learn is by reading good books, and experimenting. I learnt to sew by ripping up my old clothing and trying to make it into something new, and I think that’s a fun way to learn!

Thank you so much for doing this interview, Megan! Don’t forget to check out Megan’s blog and shop!

Here’s to another day of fun traveling with my love! Today we are heading to Durango! We’re hoping to find lots to do there and maybe come home with a few souvenirs !

One of my favorite coffee shops in all of Colorado is Doghouse Espresso!

The Shine Project: Change for Change

07.02.11

Have you guys heard of The Shine Project? The Phoenix based blog/project is run by Ashley LeMieux and focuses on daily motivation, and also the importance of reaching out to the community and helping others. Today Ashley debuted this really amazing video that she created to help showcase what she and her blog are all about.

Recently, Ashley told me about this awesome project she is started to raise money for The Shine Project Scholarship Fund, which will give scholarships to inner city school students to help create a positive impact on their lives.

So starting today Ashley is asking everyone to pitch their left-over change into a jar for the next three months, and when October 1st rolls around you can donate your extra change to the scholarship fund. Check out Ashley’s blog for more details!
Also, Ashley made these really awesome change labels that you can save and print out and put on your change jars! Such a sweet touch, and a great remembrance tool to use to reminder yourself to pitch your change in their every day.
In October Ashley will be hosting a silent auction in the Phoenix Metropolitan area that will benefit the scholarship! Details are still being figuring out, but if you’re local and interested in attending, get in touch with Ashley and I am sure she can give you more information on the whole event. Also, If anyone is interested in donating an item to the silent auction, I am sure The Shine Project would appreciate it so much! Your donation would be for a great cause!
I truly believe this is such a great cause and I hope everyone will join in on saving their change and donating it to the scholarship fund!
