An interview with Emily of Say Anything

03.29.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Emily of Say Anything. Over a year ago I found Emily’s blog and have just adored it ever since. Emily blogs about her daily happenings being a broadcast journalism major (girl after my own heart), a girlfriend, food enthusiast, etc., and also about all the sweet things in life she encounters.

Meet Emily:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m Emily {but you can call me Em, everyone does}, I’m a 21-year old journalism student living in Ottawa. I suppose I’m a writer above all else, but really I like to think of myself as a world traveler, music fiend, aspiring novelist, big sister, happy girlfriend, carrot cake connoisseur, beauty/fashion junkie and creative soul. I blog and tweet about silly stories and all the things I’m in love with.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

I’ve always been a writer, a journal-keeper, a documentor and one day decided to take it online. I’ve had a whole bunch of blogs since 2004 before finally committing. I started Say Anything to keep in touch with friends. It was an easy way to mass-update, and I was completely bewildered when people started subscribing.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-Where I live, we’re buried under heaps of snow for about 6 months. So, half the year is purely about warmth {think: long johns, multiple sweaters, and three pairs of socks}. Not so stylish…

When it’s finally warm enough not to wear snowpants, I’m all about dusty florals, stripes, plaid flannels, lace, leather, and little dresses. High-waisted skirts, knee socks, trench coats, peep-toe shoes, classic pieces too…

I’m sort of a work in progress, trying to find my style. Lately I tend to fluctuate between cosy library-chic, super girly-prepster, and a little rock n roll grunge. I always try and channel that innately European sense of style.

4. You’re a broadcast journalism student (a girl after my own journalistic heart). How do you think being a student, and also someone that is in front of the camera from time to time, has changed your style?

-Comfort is key as a student, especially one who is running around interviewing so much, but I think everyone should be able to incorporate some glamour into their everyday outfits. I’ve never been one for sweatpants anyways, so jeggings {despite the ugly name} became king of my closet this year. My J-Brand jeggings, flat knee-high boots, and button down shirts are my campus uniform.

For studying, I’m usually in a thick-knit oversize sweater {pockets are good for pens and scraps of paper!}, skinny jeans and ballet flats. Kind of ironic for a self-proclaimed pants-hater.

5. What are your favorite trends for spring?

-I love the slim, cuffed khaki look with some cute flats and a striped shirt. I also can’t wait to wear high-waisted denim shorts with a classic white shirt tucked in and bright pink lipstick. Colour is another thing I’m going to experiment with…I usually stay in neutral territory. AND wooden platforms, but not too tall, I’m sort of a giant!

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

School and work usually, but I go on lots of dates with Ryan, do yoga, sip tons of peppermint tea, read, bake, find new favourite songs, try out Ottawa’s more absurd fitness classes, watch 30 Rock in hysterical laughter, and take polaroid pictures.

7. You seem to have a great love for the sweet moments in life. What are a few things that make your heart happy?

-True kindness. Friends all over the world. Freshly baked bread with honey. Forehead kisses. Spending time with my sisters. The smell of bonfires, jasmine, and brazil nut body scrub. Reading a perfect sentence. Getting to the bus stop right as it pulls up. Dancing. Picnics. Photobooth strips. Anything blackcurrant. That first breath of spring, and sunlight pouring in windows. Little kids speaking French. Freckles. Messy hair.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Cute floral dress, peep-toe shoes, comfy cardigan with pockets {I’m big on pockets}, a classic trench, wooly hat {just in case}, pretty scarf, and a big huge brown leather bag {try as I might, I will never be a little-purse girl}.

9. You currently live in Canada, but seem to have traveled so much and lived in amazing places (England!!). What is your favorite thing about traveling, and what is your favorite spot in England?

-My favourite thing about traveling is just realizing what a BIG, HUGE, DIVERSE world we have! And how exciting it is to venture out and explore it! Whenever I travel I’m always reminded there are billions of people just going about their lives. How crazy we all exist and are so unaware of each other.

My favourite spot in England? London. It’s electric. The energy just knocks you off your feet. I’m a big-city girl, so I feel quite at peace there.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers? What about someone interested in traveling, but doesn’t really know the ropes (tricks and tips!)?

-Aspiring bloggers? Well…I’m still working on advice for myself. Write with your own voice, don’t rely on comments and followers, dive into the network {there are so many friends out there!}, decide on what you want to write and write about it. Make a mission statement and post regularly. Mostly, have fun! It’s about you most of all.

Aspiring travelers? Just go for it! I’d recommend staying in apartment-hotels, which often allow you to live more like the locals, and get the full experience of a city. Don’t be afraid of language barriers and go everywhere with an open mind. The most wonderful things can happen if you leave space in your itinerary to just be somewhere.

Thank you so much for doing this interview with me Emily. Don’t forget to check out Emily’s blog for happy posts that are sure to make your day!

Arizona Blogger Meetup: Part 2

03.29.11

I’m back with part two of the Arizona Blogger Meet-up posts!

So after we hit the two vintage shops along Central Avenue in downtown, we all headed toward Roosevelt Row for the next part of our “tour”.

Our first stop along Roosevelt Row was MADE Art Boutique. The shop is filled with cute handmade treasures, and also art books, journals, and other fun items. At this point I think everyone’s feet were a little tired, so we all took a seat outside of the store for a moment.
After we all felt rested we made our way next store for some coffee, tea and italian sodas at Jobot Coffee. I walked into the shop to see Vanessa, Danielle, Paige, Jessica, and Brittney having the funnies conversation. The faces say it all I think.
Once everyone had a moment to grab a drink and take a break for a few, we headed toward the Grow-Op for our next activity.
During the day activity I wore a dress from Target, tights from Target, and Steven Madden oxfords. I went for a cute, but comfy look.
All the ladies seemed to really enjoy the urban garden that is growing around the Grow-Op!
Scott was there with me the whole day (as well as for the dinner) and was a huge help. I am so thankful that he is such a supportive guy, and I am so happy that he wanted to participate. Thank you my love for making the meet-up extra special!
Once we got to the Grow-Op everyone had some time to look around at all the vintage and handmade goods in the shop. Kelsey and I had a fun time looking around. I was so happy she was there with me the whole day. I really think we worked great as a team, and I honestly couldn’t have done the meet-up without her.

Scott had a nice time showing Kelsey around the shop, and pointing out all his handmade lamps and wood burnings that he currently has in the store. Seeing him giving Kelsey a tour just warmed my heart. I am so proud of him for having his handmade goods at the Grow-Op.

After everyone was done inside they started on the crafts that Ashley and the team at the Grow-op had set-up for us. There were lots of flower crowns, and cute flower boxes that Scott was showing everyone how to make.

Once people were done at the Grow-op they were making their way over to Butter Toast Boutique to check out their pretty vintage clothing. I am pretty sure that Kelsey and Vanessa were having way too much fun checking out some of the sweet pieces they had on the sale rack.
Danielle, Scott and myself had a fun time looking around inside as well. I ran into my friend Janessa in the shop and she took his silly photo of the three of us.
Lots of the ladies were also hanging out in front of Butter Toast. It was so awesome to see everyone interact so well, even though known of them had previously met each in real life. It seriously made heart swell with happiness.

Ok, more updates to come! I still need to share our Frances and Smeeks adventure, along with the dinner that was so much fun.

Arizona Blogger Meetup: Part 1

03.28.11

This past Saturday was the Arizona Blogger Meet-up. Kelsey, Danielle, and I spent three months planning the meet-up, and we were all so excited and nervous when the day finally rolled around. I’m going to be breaking the meet-up photos and stories into multiple posts, so here is a few shots and stories from the beginning part of the day activity that we held in downtown Phoenix.

We met at the Civic Space Park at noon. Everyone seem to come together really well, and it was pretty easy to point out who the bloggers were as they were walking up to the group. I saw a few many familiar faces, and many new faces as well.
Here is the group right before we left the park. After this shot we all walked together to the farmer’s market in front of the Phoenix Public Market. Oh, and many more bloggers showed up after this photo as well.
Once we got to the farmer’s market there was a coffee run at Royal at the Market.
Lots of fun photos with ladies I was so happy to be with. Here I am with Paige, Vanessa, and Kelsey.
Time spent with my blogger turned real life friend Courtney (love this lady so much).
Chatting with some ladies that I was so excited to meet. Myself, Jessica, Vanessa, Paige, Kara, and Danielle.
Scott and I’s friend Ashley met up with us at the farmer’s market after putting the finishing touches on the craft area that we would be visiting at the Grow-Op later in the day. Ashley was such a huge help, and I am so happy that she was there with us.

After everyone got done perusing around the market, we all headed down to Mercantile boutique and salon.

All the bloggers seem to have a nice time looking through all the pretty vintage items in the shop. Mercantile is one of my favorite boutiques in the area, and I was so excited to introduce it to everyone.

A saw a few ladies making some purchases, and Scott grabbed a shot with Vanessa and her new pretty belt.

After we were all done shopping and looking around in Mercantile, we all headed a few doors down to Vintage by Misty. This shop just opened earlier in the week, so it was nice to check out all the pretty designer/fancy vintage items they had stocked the shop with.

This is all for part one, check back for part two very soon. Also, if anyone from the meet-up has blogged about the day, please leave a link in the comments so I can check out the posts!
Have you ever attended a blogger meet-up before?

The Arizona Blogger Meet-Up has finally arrived!

03.26.11

Today is the day! Today is the Arizona Blogger Meet-up and I am overwhelmingly excited! Yesterday I got coffee with Danielle, Paige, Kelsey, Kelsey’s husband Jim, and also Scott. It was almost surreal to be sitting together with all these wonderful people that I had talked so much with on Twitter and through our blogs.

Later on in the evening all of us plus Vanessa and Sam had dinner togeher and had such a wonderful time. The high point was the fresh donuts with caramel sauce. Oh man. Will be blogging about those soon.
Anyways, I can’t wait to see everyone today and I really hope each and everyone one of you that is able to make it out to the meet-up today introduces themselves. It’s going to be a fantastic day and I am so excited to meet everyone and have a great time!

Spring: Bright & Bold

03.25.11
This week has been a whirlwind. School has kept me super busy, as well as attending yearly doctors appointments, and putting the finishing touches on the Arizona Blogger Meet-up schedule. To say I’ve been busy is an understatement, but I’ve been enjoying it (for the most part) and I’m so excited to have a wonderful day tomorrow meeting new friends and going on adventures.
Rose dress in green peony: c/o Mixie; Mocha tights: c/o We Love Colors; Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell
Recently I received this pretty dress from Shannon at Mixie Clothing. I found her shop through Bluebird Vintage, and was immediately drawn to the classic shapes, floral and other unique fabrics, and also that they pride themselves on the fact that all their clothing is made locally in California.
As many of you know I am a huge local supporter enthusiast, and really think it’s amazing that such a cute shop is keeping things local and taking so much pride in their work.

Scott and I were both really impressed with the quality of dress, and both really loved the large floral pattern. There are so many great details on the dress that just made me love it more and more. I’m a huge fan of the pockets, the wrap around tie that helps accentuate my waist (because what women doesn’t love that?), the pretty little ruching around the top, and also the collar on the dress. Over all I am a huge fan of this dress and see it making a big statement in my spring and summer wardrobe. If you’re interested in checking out more of their cute garments, check out their site here.

I wore this outfit to class the other day and felt really feminine, but also very comfortable. I was warm the whole day with my tights on, and also with the length of the sleeves. I carried around a light cream sweater with me for when I felt an extra chill from my classrooms. Perfect school style outfit.

Today I had a dentist appointment, and now Scott and I are about to go run some errands for the Arizona Blogger Meet-up. This afternoon we are having coffee with Danielle and Paige and I couldn’t be any happier.

What are you up to today? Are you digging the large floral prints for spring?

Under the Train Tracks

03.24.11
Before the buckets of rain and cold weather hit Phoenix earlier this week it was sunny, warm and bright. I’ve been digging through my “warm weather” clothing and came across a few gems that I had forgotten about, like the tank top and cardigan I wore when Scott and I went on a mini adventure in Tempe. I just love finding clothes that you had previously loved so much.

Sunglasses: Ray Bans; Cardigan: Target; Tank top: Levi’s; Bag: Coach; Jeans: Levi’s; Boots: Justin’s

Lately I’ve been digging this cowboy vibe, but it really has only gone as far as rocking my favorite pair of cowboy boots. I alway feel like a lady wearing them.
Scott and I took these photos under a bridge in Tempe. I have found memories of taking photos in this same spot years ago with Scott. I remember running across the road from the parking lot (where a turn is that most drivers zip by super fast on), and walking around the area taking photos of one another just for fun. Later we would go on top of the train tracks and take photos up there as well. We were so young (19 I would say), and had so much fun going on photo adventures. Things really haven’t changed much!

While digging around for old clothing treasures I found this Coach bag that belongs to my mom. She got it for her birthday a handful of years ago, and lately it hasn’t seen the light of day. I think the bucket style is really cute, and kind of rustic.
Even though I would consider myself a Northwest girl in a second (my mom is from Seattle), I really can’t ignore my Southwest roots. The sun, cowboy boots, heat, cactus, and all things rustic area truly in my blood.
On a side note, this Saturday is the Arizona Blogger Meet-Up. I hope everyone can make it out to all the wonderful day activities Danielle, Kelsey, and I have planned. We are so excited to meet you all and can’t wait for a day full of fun!
Are you a cowboy boots person? Are you into that whole rustic style?

Flashlight Fun

03.23.11
During Spring Break Scott and I went out to Tempe Beach Park to experiment with my camera. I had a “creative in the camera” assignment for my Photojournalism class, so I thought it would be fun to mess around with shutter speeds and a flashlight. The results:

Scott’s first name!

And this was the lightrail bridge that night, so pretty with its changing lights.
Most of the light photos were done by Scott, as he is much better at drawing with light than I am. He told me it was because he was a design student and he has spent many hours drawing (that of which I have not, darn my writing skills haha).
We sure had a lot of fun and I foresee more photo adventures like this in the future.
Have you ever played with light and a camera?

An interview with Mandy of Harper’s Happenings…and Some of Mine, Too

03.22.11

Today we have a really awesome interview with Many of Harper’s Happenings…and Some of Mine, Too. Mandy is a sweet momma and wife, and has such a cute style. She blogs about her daily life with her family, and also encourages other mom’s to show off their personal style.

Meet Mandy:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Mandy, I’m 29 years old and live in a little waterfront town outside of Seattle. I’m a mama to the spunkiest little girl, Harper, who is just shy of 2 1/2 and wife to Scot (with one T). I’m a stay at home mom and spend my free time running my little online shop, Opal (http://opal.bigcartel.com if you wanted to link!) and blogging about our life adventures. I’m obsessed with narwhals, thrifting, Anderson Cooper and americanos.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

If we don’t count my kick ace Myspace blog back in the day (which we don’t) or my brief affair with LiveJournal, I’ve been officially blogging since 2008. I had a tiny blog that I started when I got pregnant with Harper and a few months after she arrived I started HH to keep family up to date. I had no idea what blogging was going to mean to me at that time! Years later I have an amazing place to put my creativity AND share stories about Harper. The community I’ve found through blogging was something I never expected and has come to be the best part of it.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

I like simple but fun outfits that are easy to move in (playing at the park and such). Day to day I love dark slim jeans and cotton tops punched up with fun necklaces, a scarf or bright shoes. I’m also collecting quite the dress collection which is something pre-baby I never used to really wear. Now I can’t imagine my wardrobe without them!

4. You’re the momma to the sweetest little girl! How do you think being a mom has affected your style?

Oddly enough, motherhood has affected my style for the better! Well, I should clarify – when the nugget was born I did what most new moms do out of pure necessity – live in pj pants, tanks and hoodies. When you run the risk of getting poop, spit up, drool and whatnot on every item you own, you tend to not want to wear anything nice. But as Harper has gotten older and the risk of gross things on my clothes has gone down, I have found myself really enjoying getting dressed up and finding a new style that works for my life. I’m having more fun than ever! Picking out clothes for a little girl is pretty awesome, too 🙂

5. What are your favorite trends for spring?

Can I just say that living in the PNW makes me just flat out EXCITED for Spring in general? SO. READY. for dresses without tights, open toed shoes and tossing my cardigans to the back of the closet. It’s been a chilly and long winter and I cannot wait. And I will be running, not walking, to get a pair of wooden platform shoes.

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

Thrifting, attempting to craft or redesign things, drinking coffee and going on mini adventures with my little family. I could consider the post office my second home for all the time I spend there for my shop. Harper is the best thrift shopping partner! She helps me find the best treasures.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

Honestly I draw the most fashion inspiration from fellow bloggers. I don’t have a ton of time to read magazines anymore, but I am online a lot and that is where I see other ladies and their style which in turn inspires me. I love getting a peek into what other people are trying, it makes me want to be more adventurous. The fact that these are real people makes certain trends and styles more attainable.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

Oh man! I’d love to say a fun dress with a cute belt and strappy wedges, but as a mom of a toddler who plans on being pregnant again at least once, i will have to be a little more practical and say slim jeans, a flowy feminine top with a long necklace and some flats.

9. You started a fun feature called “Steppin’ Out Saturday.” What was your inspiration to start this?

We are incredibly lucky to have my mom nearby and she takes Harper for a sleepover every Saturday night (I know). Scot and I pretty much always use this time to go on a date and then see our friends, so I’m always definitely getting real clothes on this night. I wanted other moms (and women in general!) to have an excuse to get dressed, feel great about themselves and share their outfits. I absolutely love what it has turned into – so many ladies have told me that going around to all the participating blogs (since it’s a link up) has helped them get dressed up again, given them style inspiration and the best part, meet other bloggers they may not have otherwise met.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers? What about someone interested in sharing their daily outfits, but are a little weary about it?

My advice on sharing daily outfits is just do it! I know for me, my blog started off as a typical “baby blog” but when I started sharing my style it opened me up to a whole new group of people. As a mom it has proven to me that I can still be stylish and take care of myself and what I like. But if you’re really weary, participate in my Steppin’ Out Saturday and tell you readers I made you do it. I don’t mind taking the blame 🙂

Thank you so much for doing this interview Mandy! Don’t forget to check out Mandy’s blog for some cute stories and inspirational mama style photos.

School Style

03.21.11
Now that Spring Break is officially over I am back in school mode and trying to stay focus on my studies as much as possible. Before break started I wore this outfit to class during my “long day” at school (1-5:30 p.m.). I’m a big fan of being comfortable at school, that way I am less focused on my outfit and more focused on what I have going on.
Sunnies: Ray Bans; Sleeveless cardigan: Target; Dress: Target; Grey tights: c/o We Love Colors; Mary-janes: Simple Shoes

Usually when I go to class I carry a large tote, but this day I decided to bring my Coach purse that I have been carrying around non-stop lately. The size of this bag really doesn’t cut it for school though, but sometimes my arm just needs a break from my heavy totes.

Layers are also very important to me when I’m going to class. Many of the rooms in my building are absolutely freezing, especially when the weather gets warmer outside, and I hate to find myself freezing in class, unable to concentrate because I’m so cold (and also very sleepy as the cold seems to make me tired). If I’m not wearing a cardigan or something over my shirt/dress, I always have a sweater in my bag or car (and usually a spare pair of shoes in case my feet get tired/cold).

Tight are always a must if I’m wearing a dress or skirt to school as well. This pair of We Love Colors tights are extra thick, and are so comfortable to wear. If you’re in need of new tights (I know it’s getting warmer, but tights are still an essential in my wardrobe) I would highly suggest buying a pair of microfiber tights from WLC. They’re my favorite!

What does your school style usually look like?

Afternoon Coffee

03.20.11

On Thursday Scott and I were in downtown Phoenix so I could work on few things for school. Before we went to work though we took a little stroll down to Jobot Coffee for iced toddys.

Prettiest window frame and fabric.
I love this little shop.

Three iced toddys, one for me, Scott, and our friend Ashley (who was kind enough to let me take photos of her in the Grow-Op shop and interview for an article I’m working on).
Today is my last day of break before I hit the books again. Iced coffee and my love are making me happy.
What is putting a smile on your face today?
