Twilight Knits

12.18.10

I spent most of my day yesterday hanging out with my parents at the hospital, and also Christmas shopping with my mom. Since I was pretty busy during the morning/afternoon I had to take photos at the tail-end of the afternoon when the sun had disappeared, and the snow filled clouds were ushering in nightfall.

Knit headband: Urban Outfitters
Wool jacket: Banana Republic
Wool cardigan: Eddie Bauer
Jeggings: Levi’s
Knee-high socks: Target
Boots: Uggs (purchased in 2005)
Yesterday it was absolutely freezing. I’m pretty sure it didn’t get any warmer than 14 degrees during the day! It was still a beautiful day though, and the snow covered trees left me in awe time and time again.
Earlier in the day my mom purchased this cardigan for me as a Christmas present (when you’re away from home and don’t have time to shop alone, it’s just easier to shop together and pick out something you really like). I was supposed to wait, and let my mom wrap it and put it under the tree, but I just couldn’t (too cute to wait). It’s made out of wool and cashmere, and is sooo cozy!

Since it was getting dark I was having a little trouble taking photos. My camera simply did not want to focus on me, and thought the background was a nice, sharper shot. This made for extra time spent trying to get in focus shots, and multiple people asking me what I was doing, and if I wanted them to take a photo of me (I’m pretty sure a group of people were laughing at me as they passed by).

This is my favorite photo of the evening though my nose is a little red from the cold.
Today I’m hoping to go for a nice walk through Vail Village, and to enjoy the snow flurries that we are having here. I also think a nice warm drink from Starbucks is in order. I’ve been drinking coffee from the hospital cafeteria since I’ve been here, so I think I’m do for a nice hot drink from an actual barista.
The snow makes me feel nostalgic, kind of how I feel when listening to Beneath the Medicine Tree by Copeland, or Set Yourself on Fire by Stars.
How does the snow make you feel? Nostalgic, or just miserable?

Bright as Snow

12.17.10
Yesterday was the first sunny day that we’ve had in Vail since I arrived here. It was so nice to see the sun shining down on the snow, and making it a glittery, wintery paradise. It was so strange though to see snow falling from the sky, and the sun as bright as can be.

Knit hat: DC (purchased at a shop in Vail because I was freezing)
Jacket: Guess
Dress: Old Navy
Shirt under the dress: American Apparel
Rust colored tights: c/o We Love Colors
Boots: Steve Madden
Yesterday it was extra cold – 22 degrees in the day, and 5 degrees in the evening. To my knowledge, I’ve never been in anything colder than 14 degree weather, so 5 degrees was a little bit of a shocker for me. My nose was freezing on my walk back to the hotel yesterday evening.
I bought this hat while out getting dinner with my mom the other night. My hat was not doing the job, and when I saw this one in a local shop I knew it would be extra cozy. I wore it all day yesterday (even inside), and my head and ears were kept warm the whole time.
(I love the little pom-pom.)

(Wishing I had someone aka Scott, to throw that tiny snowball at.)
I really liked the way that these rust colored tights popped against the whiteness of the snow, and my grayscale outfit. They definitely added something special to my outfit. Oh, and yet again I know there were people thinking to themselves as they walked by me taking photos of myself, that crazy girl from Arizona in tights in 22 degree weather!

I’ve been having a lot of fun taking these photos every day. For the past three days I’ve been trying to find a new place to take photos every day, and have succeeded so far. I’ve found it a bit challenging to carry all my equipment, and walk cautiously down this slanting road that I trek every day, but it really has been a good experience for myself. Although I love my photographer and wish he was here, I really think I can now take my own photos, and that it’s not as hard as I thought it would be.
Today I will continue to hang out with my parents, and hopefully get a little Christmas shopping done. I can’t believe Christmas is almost here! This year has gone by so quickly.
What do you have planned for today?

Vail Bridge

12.16.10
Yesterday was a snow day in Vail. When I saw the snow slowly start to fall in the morning I was overwhelmingly excited. It has been years, and years since I’ve seen it snow (early childhood), so it was a lot of fun to see the snow fall from the sky, and to have it kiss my cheeks.

Hat: H&M
Wool coat: Guess
Sweater dress: Kimchi Blue, Christmas present from Scott’s mom a few years back
Blue shirt: unknown
Tights in rubine: c/o We Love Colors
Boots: Steve Madden

Down the road from where we are staying there is a cute bridge that goes over the river that I showed the other day. Since I’ve been here I’ve must have walked it twenty times, as it is the easiest way to get down the hill that our hotel sits on.

Throughout the day the snow came down harder, and harder. Sometimes it was to the point that I couldn’t see across the street. However, I never found myself too cold. I think I will attribute this to the fact that I was wearing extra warm clothes yesterday. That coat is seriously such a lifesaver.

I had this feeling of nostalgia more than once while watching the snow fall. It was amazing to see such beautiful, delicate tiny shapes fall from the sky. The roads I walked had this special shine to it, and it almost looked like I was walking on glitter.
Did I mention that I loved being the only girl wearing rubine colored tights and a dress outside? I didn’t see one girl wearing a dress and tights that day, only snow boarding gear. So to be wearing such pretty clothing in the snow made me feel good, and a little unique (Did you see that girl from Arizona wearing tights and a dress outside? She must be crazy!).
Today will be spent with my mom and dad mostly. I also hope to grab a few cups of coffee, and take some more pretty photos. I’m really enjoying going out on my own and taking photos, but still, I miss my photographer.
What does your day look like today? Have you finished Christmas shopping?

Polar Opposities

12.15.10

First and foremost, I want to say that this is my first attempt at taking outfit photos by myself. I am pleased to say that I think it worked out fairly well, but I definitely missed my lovely photographer.

Anyways, yesterday afternoon was chilly, overcast, and all kinds of beautiful. The snow kept my toes cold, but made for an amazing backdrop for all of my photos. In Phoenix I never have the chance to get a full winter experience, and I would have to say yesterday definitely made up for the lack of cooler weather we’ve been experiencing at home. By the way, I now officially love the snow and all the nostalgia it brings!
Jacket: Banana Republic
Scarf: Gift from my mom
Brown cardigan: Target
Blue shirt: Levi’s
Multi-color warm socks: Target
Boots: BP
I took these photos on the side of the hotel that we are staying at for the week. The red and orange colored trees that lined the hotel were melting my heart, and were such a nice pop of color for my eyes against all the pretty white snow.

I thought this path would be the perfect place to take photos, a place where I wouldn’t have to stop for passersby (or feel awkward because I was taking photos of myself), but alas, about ten people or so walked by in the beginning of my shoot. I’m pretty sure I heard an older man said he was going to try and not knock over my tripod (oh my).
(because Carly said she likes it when you can see my teeth haha)
I bought these socks before I left. They are extra thick and have proved to be a great purchase. I have a pair of solid brown ones that I am sure I will be wearing very soon as well.

I had a lot of fun playing in the snoq. I wish I had Scott there with me though. I would have thrown a huge snowball at him and made him make a snow angel with me :]
J (John Scott) heart C, of course
Today is my dad’s surgery, but since are hotel is very close to the hospital I am sure I will be able to take some time and snap a few outfit photos. I definitely thinking a pair of tights, a warmer coat, and some boots are in order for this chilly day.

Snow & Cold in Vail, Colorado

12.15.10
Today was spent drinking coffee, walking in the snow, taking loads of photos, shopping, and working on Christmas cards. Here are a few photos from my outings today:
River that sits behind our hotel.

At breakfast, in a tiny cafe.

Coffee and Irish oatmeal.
The prettiest real wreath I’ve ever seen.

Can you see me?

Socks and boots.

Bridge by our hotel (wishing Scott was there so much at that moment).
What did your day look like? Was it a cold day where you are?

Winter on Tempe Town Lake

12.14.10
Before I left Phoenix for Colorado, Scott and I went on a little adventure to Tempe Town Lake. On this particular day it was very warm, the warmest it had been in weeks, and the lake looked oh so pretty in the sunlight.
Seablanket shirt: c/o Seablanket & Chemistry of Cool
Skirt: Gap
Teal knee-highs: c/o We Love Colors
Boots: BP
Flannel: Levi’s
Pants: Quicksilver
Shoes: Gray TOMS

Tempe Town Lake is a man-made lake. Over the summer the dam that holds the water in broke, therefore letting all the water drain out and leaving the lake in a dry state. About a month ago they finally got water back into the lake, just in time for the Iron Man race they have there every year.

I was really excited to receive this Seablanket shirt. The sweet design was printed on an American Apparel Summer shirt, which is extra comfy and soft.
Scott and I have always talked about renting a little boat to take out on the lake. I have a feeling that this winter it will finally happen. We really want to get a boat that we have to move with feet (like a bike), and spend a few hours roaming around, taking photos and hoping to not fall in (eww).

I’ve had this skirt for about three or so years so and have probably only worn it two or three times. Nowadays it’s on the bigger side for me, but I found that pairing it with a belt and wearing it high has made it a piece that is definitely wearable (and cute).

(I really love braids in my hair)

Since this week I am in Colorado without Scott (boo) I will be attempting to take my own outfit photos (tripod + timer). I am really hoping that I get at least a few cute shots, but I am definitely going to miss my wonderful photographer!

This morning I ventured out into the cold and the snow. I feel a walk down to one of the local cafes sometime today is a must, and a hot cup of coffee must be consumed on an hourly basis. I am also excited for my warm + cute outfit today. The scenery here is gorgeous, so I know it won’t be hard to find a place to shoot a few photos.
Is it snowing where you live? Do you enjoy the snow? How do you usually dress for the cold?

An interview with Lauren of Busy Bee Lauren

12.14.10
Today we have a lovely interview with Lauren of Busy Bee Lauren. Lauren runs a super inspiring blog, and wears some of the best threads around. She has amazing style, and makes some of the cutest headbands around.
Say hello to Lauren:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Well, my name is Lauren, and I love food. Seriously. ha! But other than that, I am an interior design student, a lover of photography, a thrift store fanatic, vintage obsessed, and I love my husband! I started dating my husband when I was 15, so we are high school sweethearts (insert “awwwws” here). We got married super young, so we are totally immature, but we love it. Oh, and I sorta blog sometimes. And by sometimes, I mean everyday. 🙂

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

Honestly, I kinda went into blindly, not knowing that eventually blogging would be a huge thing. I started when I was 18, and when it wasn’t really the cool thing to do. I made a blog mostly because I was so insanely bored. I have no been blogging more than 4 years! The 4 years has covered a crazy amount of big life events. I am really grateful for all of the documentation!

3. Can you tell us about your style?

I like to call it “eclectic”. While I love the newer trends, we can’t afford for me to go shopping at regular clothing stores. I have really had to learn to be creative with thrift store finds. The lucky thing is, my favorite thrift store has quite a decent selection of vintage dresses and blouses. I like to mix vintage clothing with a touch of modern day edginess and spunk 🙂 Also, I am all about color. I rarely wear neutrals.

4. I’ve noticed quite a few blogger ladies wearing your headbands lately. They’re fabulous! What other kind of crafts do you enjoy doing?

I get so excited seeing people in my headbands or hair clips! It gives me warm fuzzies. I really love to paint, and I am a big do-it-yourselfer. Most of our entire home has been found at a thrift store, and redone by me. Not only does it save us a ton of money, it’s super fun!

5. What are your favorite trends for winter?

I love all of sequins! I have always loved anything with sparkles, so to see all of the beautiful sequined tops, dresses and blazers, has made my heart skip a beat! The cool thing is, most thrift stores carry lots of 80’s beaded tops and jackets, so you can find things “on trend” that are also vintage…and unique! Love that.

6. When you’re not busy creating cute headbands, blogging, and working, what can you be found doing?

Cooking, spending time with family, and reading. I have always loved to cook, and it’s gotten to the point where I don’t even look at recipes much anymore. I love just creating new dishes. Also, spending time with family has always been one of my favorite things, and something I feel is so important. You can never make enough memories. And of course reading…I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to books. I would read a book over shopping or basically anything else. Me and my book boyfriends? We are very serious. Don’t mess.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

I love the 70’s…especially the hippies. Oh man…how I love the way those women dressed. The feminine, light and flowy dresses. The feathers and beads. The closeness with nature. Ahhhh! I love!

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

Well…it would probably be this. I love this vintage maxi dress. It is seriously so comfortable, and I love how it ties at the waist. It is basically one of my favorite finds of all time.

9. Your husband Ted and your family seem to be a big part of your blog. What do they think about it?

Ha! They are very supportive. Obviously Ted is a pretty good sport…I mean he lets me take all of those photos of him, ha! But the funny thing is, he has only read my blog like 5 times total. It’s awesome. My mom is probably my biggest supporter…always reading and commenting. She is the bomb. Also, she gets strangers coming up to her all the time because of the blog, so I think she enjoys that 🙂

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers? What about someone that is new to blogging?

Be who you are, and love it. Don’t follow fashion trends because you think you should…wear what makes you feel happy and pretty! The same could be said for blogging. Blog about what makes you happy, and represents who you are as a person 🙂

Thank you so much Lauren for doing this interview with me! Don’t forget to check out Lauren’s blog (and say hello of course!).
