LIVING SPACES FALL REFRESH + CONTEST

10.17.16

While we’ve been calling this tiny space “home” for quite a few months now, this marks our first autumn in The Appleby Home! Since we moved in during the later days of spring and early summer, we naturally gravitated toward having a very bright, airy and “cool” feeling for our space — ya know, to help beat that summer heat! Since we’re now into a cooler season, we knew we were due for a fall refresh, and our friends over at Living Spaces were kind enough to help us out in making our home feel fit for fall (and they want to help you too — keep reading!).

Before we started on our refresh, we did a little research and took inspiration from our favorite magazines, movies, tv shows, albums and Pinterest, of course. Scott and I both knew we wanted to draw in more warm tones, lots of texture and add in an extra layer of coziness that would be perfect for chilly fall evenings and could follow us well into the winter months. I’ve included a few “before” photos so you can get a feel for our place before the refresh!

Before we headed out to our local Living Spaces, Scott and I made a quick list of colors, textures and accent pieces we thought could help in transforming our space for fall. However, we both walked into the store with an open mind — with so many different styles and pieces to choose from at affordable prices, we knew we were bound to find the perfect pieces for our home. In fact, we might have gone back more than once — first to take it all in, mull it over (I’m well known for doing this — I like to think about my purchases before taking the plunge), and then back again to make our final selections.

Since warmth and coziness were key factors in the plan we had for our refresh, we decided to swap out our white and indigo couch pillows for ones with a bit more texture and color to them — this blue velvet pillow (similar!) was one of the first pieces I spotted (I’m a forever fan of velvet), and this Southwestern style print pillow closely followed — and while it’s not a piece I would typically feel is very fall, the colors and fabric make it feel warm and just right for our tiny home in the desert.

While fresh flowers may feel more like a spring detail than fall, I believe it’s so important to have greenery in your home — this amber tealight vase felt like the perfect vessel to hold a bunch of my favorite golden flowers. Now that we’re getting closer to Halloween, I want to fill it with some of those darling mini pumpkins on a stick that you can often find at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods — still adding a pop of color, but keeping with those warm tones that we first had in mind.

You all know our kitty, Boots, just can’t seem to stay out of the action — so he joined me for a few photos while he got cozy with a marine washed velvet pillow (same shape, different color). What can I say, he’s got good taste!

In the midst of our refresh, we gave our coffee table an update too! We spotted these brass metal baskets during our second trip to the store and knew immediately that they would make the perfect addition to our oval space. We filled one with a few seasonal favorites — crips apples, red pears and pumpkins. I love the style and dimension the geometric basket brings! Coffee tables are one of my favorite spaces to design, and Living Spaces had so many great stylish and functional pieces to choose from.

To complete the space, we added in a cozy cream throw (similar!) and a pair of woven baskets that will be perfect for stacking more blankets and throws in as the days get colder and colder. I’m so happy with how cozy our tiny space now feels, and now I want to refresh our entire home for the autumn months!

I hope you love our refresh as much as we do! I’m thrilled to be partnering with Living Spaces to celebrate the fall season on Pinterest where you can win one of five $250 promo cards to shop and refresh your own space for fall! The contest is live now, so head on over to the Living Spaces Facebook page to enter to win! Oh, and be sure to check out their Fall Clearance Event online and in-store!

Don’t forget that you can shop our space by checking out my Pinterest board with all of items featured! I hope you all have a very cozy Monday, and I’ll be back soon!

HACKWITH DESIGN X PHX GENERAL

10.12.16

It’s no secret — I’m all about shopping local and supporting our friends in their amazing endeavors. So when our longtime friends opened the doors to their newest shop, PHX General, we were very excited to check it out and do a little shopping! Among the pieces that came home with us that day, a Hackwith Design and PHX General collaboration dress — the Shanna! I’ve always wanted a piece from HD (everything they make is stunning), and since this dress was designed specifically with Phoenix in mind —  I had to have it.

Dresses aside, PHX General is chock full of gorgeous home and style favorites. I’m actually due for my next trip to the shop to check out their new fall arrivals — I see lots of cozy layers, infinity scarves and modern housewares in my near future! 😉

It may only be Tuesday, but this week has been jammed packed so far. Scott and I have been prepping for Pineapple Triangle’s AZ Share That You Care market this Saturday, along with trying to squeeze in some family time and our nightly walks. I’m also hoping to get in a quick getaway up north sometime soon to see the yellow aspens before they all start to fall. Autumn is my absolute favorite season, and while its still been in the 90’s here during the day, I am SO ready to swap out my wardrobe, stop in at a local pumpkin patch, take a stroll through the changing leaves, watch Hocus Pocus, make homemade caramel apples and so much more. One thing at a time, right?  I know what we’ll be watching during our next ornament stringing party!

OUR TUFT & NEEDLE

10.10.16

I have something to admit, before moving into our tiny home we were sleeping on a mattress that was way past its prime — creaky, a bit sunken in and in need of being replaced. Since our budget was on lock down with the new home expenses, we know that buying a new mattress wasn’t in our immediate future. So we were incredibly thankful when our friends over at Tuft & Needle (an amazing local company that’s doing great things!), gifted us the most amazing housewarming present — new mattresses for us and our future guests!

In case you haven’t already heard, Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 by two friends who were sick of the lack of fairness and transparency in the mattress industry. Today, their headquartered in Phoenix, Ariz., are selling their adaptive foam mattresses at a true cost and are rated #1 online! Needless to say, Scott and I have so many reasons to love this company (their also made in the USA!) — but in all honesty, their mattresses are incredible and so comfortable!

Taking a step back, let me paint a picture for you — we were one month into homeownership and were finally going to spend our very first night in our home. I was nervous, we had no furniture (we were still in the finishing stages of our home at this point — flooring, appliances, water, electricity, etc.) and the only things in our unfinished bedroom were a metal bed frame, a fresh set of bedding and our new Tuft & Needle Queen size mattress (that was super quick and easy to unbox). I went into that first night with my nerves racing high, but as soon as we laid down all of my worries seem to subside (cheesy, but true). Our first night in our new home was quiet, cool and comfortable — basically, everything I could have hoped for, and every day since has been just the same (well, other than those evenings when the high school band just won’t stop playing, haha!).

Scott and I are both so grateful we were able to move into our home with a new and comfortable place to lay our heads at night — something we realized the first night in was a huge blessing and the best way we could have hoped for starting this new chapter in our life!

If you’ve been considering a Tuft & Needle mattress, we say go for it! You can visit a showroom (with locations in downtown Phoenix and San Francisco, currently!), have it shipped to your home for free and sleep on it for a full 100 nights before making your final decision! Oh, and just in case you were wondering — our kitty, Boots, is a big fan of our new mattress as well — he’s also a camera hog and just couldn’t pass up a good photo opp! 😉

Thank you SO much again to the amazing team at Tuft & Needle for making our house feel more like a home and gifting us a set of mattresses that we know will be put to very good use. As always, all opinions are our own and we’re very grateful for the opportunity to help spread the word about a company that’s doing such great things right in our own backyard!

Have you heard of Tuft & Needle? Love their mattresses? Let us know!

OH, OCTOBER

10.06.16

Hey there, October! I am SO happy to finally have you here! While these early autumn days are already zooming on by, I’m doing my best to savor the sweet moments of this new season — the start of sweater weather (I’ve got my eye on this pretty sweater!), pumpkins everywhere and that early autumn glow that fills the sky each night as the sun begins to set. I’ve also been keeping a few of my early autumn essentials all in line — mini pumpkins, copper bowls (for baking — or tiny mums!) and Peixoto Coffee iced espresso tonic, of course! Tonight truly felt like the perfect autumn night — windows open, the new Bon Iver filling the house and a few moments to just soak in all the good that October holds (my besties wedding, birthdays, arts markets, autumn and more!).

What’s been your favorite thing about this new season so far? Have you picked out your Halloween costume yet? Be back soon, sweet friends! -Chelsea xo

COLORADO FRONT RANGE: 10 FALL ACTIVITIES

09.26.16

With fall now in full focus and the summer months behind us, I’ve been dreaming of an autumn getaway to see the changing colors and falling leaves! Do you know where is one of the very best places to see this all happen? Colorado, of course! I spent my childhood admiring the yellow aspens in the fall, and have been dreaming of a way that Scott and I can make our way back up there before all of the leaves have fallen. Until then, I’ll just be looking through photos of my last trip to the Colorado Front Range, and reading up on all of the fun fall activities to do in the area! Curious? Here are 10 fall activities to do in the Colorado Front Range —

Boulder: The Boulder Farmer’s Market was one my favorite stops along our five day adventure! The market is still going strong in the fall, and I have a feeling that you’ll be able to find a few delicious pumpkin treats and some hot apple cider there! Looking for more activities to do in Boulder during the fall? Here’s a full list

Estes Park: I can only image how beautiful Estes Park must be in the fall — surrounded by trees and a beautiful scenery that lends itself to being a gorgeous autumn scene straight out of a movie! Heading that way soon? Here’s a full list of things to do in fall in EP, including the Fall Back Beer Festival in November!

Loveland: One of the highlights of my summer trip to Colorado was experiencing the Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch where we took a two hour horseback ride through the mountains, and stopped to have a very rustic lunch along the way. If you’re in the area, an autumn ride around the ranch is a must! Oh, and don’t forget to stop by Osborn Farms after to pick your own pumpkins for some more autumn fun.

Greeley: Our time in Greeley back in June may have been short, but this charming city certainly made an impression! There always seems to be something fun to do in Greeley (last time around the Greeley Stampede was in town), and during autumn there are no exceptions — here’s the full calendar of events for the fall season (an evening at the orchestra, farmers market and more!).

Fort Collins: This charming college town has so much to offer — great food, great coffee, great treats, great people … I literally could go on and on! Their autumn calendar of events is packed full this season, but just in case you needed a few extra suggestions — a visit to Jessup Farms is a must, a stroll downtown is the perfect way to take in all the cute shops and cafes, and I hear this year’s Tour de Corgi is sure to be a lot of fun (will be in CA during this year’s festivities, but I’m crossing my fingers for next year — because, corgis!).

Longmont: This gorgeous city was our last stop during our whirlwind trip through the Colorado Front Range this summer, and was one place that I just wished I had more time to spend exploring in. I hear they have a full line-up of autumn events, including their Day of the Dead Exhibit (which is the largest in the state)!

Now I’m curious, do you have any plans to head to Colorado this fall? If so, what towns/cities will you be headed to? Be sure to check out my first post on my trip to the Colorado Front Range for more stories, photos and suggestions on where to eat, play and stay in the CFR! I’ll be back again soon with more photos and stories from my time in Colorado, but until then I hope ya’ll are having a great Monday!

5 FAVORITES FOR FALL

09.23.16

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” FSF // Happy fall, sweet friends! My favorite season is finally here, and the autumnal equinox couldn’t have greeted us any better here in desert yesterday — cloudy skies, boot weather and pumpkin spice iced coffee on repeat (for me, at least!). In honor of the new season, I thought I would share five favorites for fall —

New Leaves by Owen, an autumn classic that I could listen to on repeat.

– The perfect pair of cognac booties for crunching through leaves and walking around in the autumn breeze. I just purchased these Hollis booties from Madewell and I have a feeling that they’ll quickly become a fall staple!

– The process of making our home feel extra cozy and warm! This year I’ll be adding a few more throws and pillows to our leather couch and chairs, along with a couple of pumpkins here and there. I currently have my eye on this pretty rust mudcloth pillow, and think it would make the perfect addition to our home for the fall season (and beyond!).

– Brewing the Chemex full of Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice coffee! I’ve tried a lot of PS coffees in my day, and this one is by far my favorite.

– Celebrating ten years of love with my forever sweetheart! We were just kids back in 2006, but we knew we had something special! xo

Happy Friday, friends! I’ll be back soon!

SO LONG SWEET SUMMMER

09.21.16

“So long sweet summer
(So long sweet summer)
I stumbled upon you and gratefully basked in your rays
So long sweet slumber
(So long sweet slumber)
I fell into you, now you’re gracefully falling away” — DC

Can you believe that it’s *almost* the last day of summer? This warm and carefree season seemed to come and go so quickly this year, just like the sunlight now that feels so fleeting each day. While I’m obviously ready to jump full into fall, I thought I would send off summer with a little ode to all of my favorite memories it held, and that includes…

… making our house a home and summer nights in Springfield MO. Sipping on iced coffee, seeing the statue of liberty and driving up and all around the state of Colorado. Singing at the top of my lungs to my favorite summer song (My Heart Beats 4 U by Rooney — in case you’re wondering), and being silly with the one I love. // Now it’s your turn — share with me a few of your favorite summer memories that you know you won’t soon forget!

This fall is set to be a full one, but I’m ready for it and can’t wait to get started (and with a girls trip for my besties bachelorette next weekend!). Scott and I have a few fun things up our sleeves, like two handmade markets with Citizen Home Decor in mid-October (Pineapple Triangle & the Mesa Bazaar), and we’re pretty stoked to celebrate ten years of love toward the end of this month! Fall 2016, we’re ready for you!

Forever 21 Boater Hat (similar)                                                                                                Madewell Courier Button-Back Shirt
Madewell High-Riser Skinny Jeans
Nisolo Huarache Sandal
Original Boyfriend Sport Chronograph Watch c/o Fossil                                                                   Madewell Zipper Transport Bag

Are you ready to kiss this summer goodbye, or are you clutching onto those last few days, hours, minutes for dear life? I’ll be back soon, but for now — so long sweet summer!

AROUND OUR HOME — 03

09.15.16

While September certainly didn’t sneak up on me (I’ve been waiting for the first month of autumn all year long), it definitely has gone by in a flash. We spent the first weekend up north with my folks in Flagstaff, Ariz., taking in the cooler temps and spending time at the county fair. Our second weekend was also spent up north, but this time in the cozy, small town of Prescott, Ariz., where we celebrated my dad’s birthday and chowed down on the most amazing homemade pie! And this weekend, well — we have big plan’s to rest, relax and check out the autumn Junk in the Truck Vintage Market!

Aside from all of the hustle and bustle, here’s a few things that I’ve been loving lately —

— My new office setup that is helping me to be oh so productive during my work from home days! We scored this West Elm desk on super sale, and I couldn’t be more happy with how the space turned out (in big thanks to my sweet husband who helped to make it just perfect for me!).

— Scott recently whipped up this window bench per my request! I had these vintage hairpin legs, that we picked up from Junk in the Trunk a few years back, tucked away for the perfect piece — and I love how it turned out. Our kitty, Peter, is a pretty big fan of it too! If you’re looking for a similar piece, this coffee table from World Market is so pretty.

— It’s finally time to pull out the fall candles (even if I am still sipping on iced coffee and wearing Birks). The Cabin scent from Lindbergh Candle Co. is one of my favorites (I heard they’ll be restocking soon!), and you just can’t go wrong with the Spiced Pumpkin scent by PF Candle Co.

How has September been treating you so far? Are you feeling the autumn itch? Have you started decorating your home for fall yet? What’s your favorite thing about September?

Talk soon, sweet friends!

50 STYLES / 50 STATES WITH OLD NAVY

09.12.16

If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time, you’ll know how much I love my home state! So when Old Navy reached out about participating in their 50 Styles, 50 States campaign — I jumped at the opportunity to show off my state pride! I was born in the heart of the state (the capitol!), and have yet to find another place that I would rather call my home.

While Arizona is known for being HOT, we also have our fair share of “cooler weather” months that allow me to pull out all of my long-sleeved dresses, booties, jackets and scarves! September is one of those interim months where it still can be 100+ degrees, but 70’ish degrees in any and all stores, restaurants, buildings, etc. I get cold really easy, so sleeved dresses, bare legs, and comfy booties are my usual go-to’s for an outfit that will take me from outside, inside and day to night in the desert!

Ever since moving out to a more rural part of town a few years back (we live on 10 acres and are surrounded by a tree farm!), I’ve been more drawn to color palettes and outfits that fit our scenery — shades of blue, brown, white and green make up most of my wardrobe these days!

How has your city or state influenced your style? I’ve loved seeing how a few others from this campaign are showing off their state flare, like Samantha from Iowa and Elana from Maine! Now what about you? Show off your own hometown style by uploading your favorite Old Navy look to your social channels, tagging @OldNavy and using the hashtags — #OldNavyStyle and #50Styles50States! Oh, and don’t forget to check out how others from around the country have styled up their favorite Old Navy outfits on People

Outfit Details:
Pleated Tie-Neck Swing Dress c/o Old Navy

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and I’ll be back soon! Chelsea xo

EARLY SEPTEMBER

09.06.16

We all know that the beginning of September is the unofficial start of the fall season, and while it may not *feel* like fall just yet in Phoenix — you can sure bet that I’ve already treated myself to a giant #PSL with an extra shot! Oh, and if you’re wondering about the photo above — yes, that does say Jessie (always, haha!) Anyways, Scott and I got home late last night after spending the last weekend of the summer up north with family and friends! We took in the cooler temps, enjoyed the sweater weather they were having in Flag (50’s at night!) and enjoyed lots of family time! It was a wonderful weekend, and I’m already looking forward to our next adventure out of the desert. Until then, here are a few things on my mind —

– I just purchased this dress to wear to my best friend’s Palm Springs wedding in October! Next up — the perfect pair of nude heels! Let me know if you have a favorite pair [must be able to dance in – ;)]!

– I really want to try this homemade PSL recipe from Oh She Glows!

These booties are on my fall wishlist!

– Scott and I just discovered the Kenneth Room Sessions by The Format, and as forever fans of TF — we’re obsessed!

– I just hung this Gilmore Girl’s inspired poster in our living room and it’s giving off all of the autumn vibes!

Hope ya’ll are having a great day, and I’ll be back soon!
