Cherry Harvest

08.20.12
As I’ve gotten a little older I’ve come to recognize the importance of stepping out of my style comfort zone every now and again. I’m not usually one to make a big, bold statement with my clothing, but rather enjoy a pop of color here and there. However, this lacy Lulus dress made me want to jump right out of my “zone,” and right into a very lady like (and unexpected color) moment for myself.

The cherry, pinky color, the lacy details (especially the sleeves!), and the silky slip made me feel more lady like than most likely any dress I’ve ever worn. The fact that Scott couldn’t stop staring at me as we walked together might not have hurt either!
The confidence boost that this lacy dress gave me even eased me into trying my first real red lip! I had been hearing so many good things about the Clinique Chubby Sticks, so I decided to pick one up in the color Chunky Cherry. So far I’m loving the color payoff, the balmy texture, and the sweet red stain it leaves on my lips after it has sunken in and worn off a bit. I just may have to try out another color sometime soon!

How do you feel about stepping out of your style comfort zone? Do you have a favorite lip stain? I would love to hear what they are!

August Lately

08.18.12

Lately my days have been filled with lots of adventures with Scott, sipping iced coffee from my favorite shops, trying out new restaurants, and visiting a few old favorites. August always feels so transitional to me, which I love, but sometimes the stress of learning a new routine can get the best of me. However, I’m attempting to take everything in strides and trying to love on life the best I can.
What are you currently loving this month? I want to make the rest of August the best I can!

Changing Scenery

08.17.12

It’s funny how one week a space can look one way, and the next it can look totally different. Awhile back one of my favorite murals (I featured it right here) was painted over and with another mural that I can only describe as “screaming infidelities” was left in its place. I am quite fond of the color palette and the time and effort I know went into creating it, but I will forever miss the coffee mural that once sat in its place. Is it silly that ever time I see this new mural I start singing Dashboard Confessional out of the blue? No? Well good!

This pretty mural is located on the other side of Giant Coffee in Phoenix where Scott and I recently attended an open coffee tasting. A few years ago a sweet friend of ours gave us a private coffee tasting and it was absolutely amazing, so we knew we had to attended the one at Giant (it was even free!). The tiny coffee shop was packed to the brim, and we had such a great time sipping coffees and chatting with other coffee enthusiasts. Scott took some really great photos during our tasting and I plan on sharing those soon as well.

Tonight we are off to the Arts How show, which is being hosted by our sweet friends Sarah and Josh. It’s open to the public and is sure to be a great time (lots of great local art being featured!). You can find all of the information right here on Josh’s blog! I hope to see some of you there tonight!
Have you ever attended a coffee tasting? If so, what did you think?

White Denim

08.15.12

Oh it feels SO good to be back into a blogging routine. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss taking outfit photos/posting them here on a regular basis. Next month will be my two year anniversary of posting outfits, and I truly can’t believe how fast time has gone by. I remember being super obsessed with a few certain style bloggers (many of which I still love today) the summer before I started posting my own outfits and feeling super inspired to get my butt out there and express my own style/personality in a way that I hadn’t before on this little blog.
Looking back, adding outfit photos and writing down my thoughts on personal style really helped to steer my blog into a direction that I now couldn’t be more grateful for. Before my personal style posts began I was lacking consistency in the topics I was sharing here, which made my every day blogging routine somewhat of a challenge and at times not as enjoyable as it should have been. Nowadays I’m so thankful to have this consistency in my life, as I know I will be able to look back on it years from now and see and remember exactly how I looked and felt on any given day. Now that my friends is something special!
On a side note, while I was gone this summer Scott picked up this pretty white denim jacket for me! What a keeper, right? I love that he knows my style so well, and that this is a piece I can see myself wearing year after year.

Jacket: Levi’s

Today Scott and I have plans for a movie date (going to see the Campaign because he LOVES Will Ferrel), and tonight we’re going to a coffee tasting at Giant Coffee in downtown Phoenix.
What are you up to today? What aspect of your blog do you most enjoy?

Back In The Saddle

08.14.12

I’ve been back home for officially one week now and yesterday I decided it was time to get “back in the saddle.” This summer time to take outfit photos was a little sparse, but I’m happy to have my photographer back and more time to spend working on something I love dearly, this little blog right here.

With the 116 degree weather we’ve been having around here lately, I’ve been opting for light, and airy clothing. The other day I even caved and went on a hunt to find a good pair of shorts to wear during this heat wave, but alas, I only came away with the even more confirmation that I am just not meant to wear shorts. Ok, that might be pushing it a bit but really, I couldn’t find a single pair that I even considered purchasing. I did read online that Jcrew shorts have a nice fit (not too short, not too long), so I might have to go check them out soon if this heat wave continues (and I’m sure it will!).
I’ve been really loving this Fossil bucket bag that I picked up while I was in Wyoming a few weeks ago. It was 75% off the original price, and for $40 I think I have found my perfect new fall bag. The leather bottom and sides are right up my alley!
It truly is so nice to be back with this guy on a day-to-day basis. My morning coffee really is just that much better with him by my side!
And these Arizona sunsets? Yep, this may have been one of the things I missed the most about my home state. I swear, I’ve never seen a prettier sunset than the ones we have around here!

Carmel’s On Camelback

08.12.12

This morning I got up bright and early so I could have breakfast with a few sweet girlfriends at a new-to-us coffee shop in Phoenix (located in the Arcadia area). Carmel’s is one of those shops that I have driven by hundreds of times, always noticing the cute plaza and the restaurant in it called Havana Cafe as I whizzed by, but I’ve never taken the time to pull in and explore the plaza at all. So I was excited when Courtney invited me to early breakfast with herself, Kara, Katherine, and her sweet twin sisters Alex and Sam.

Their muffins and scones looked amazing!

I got a Car-Muffin sandwich (an english muffin with eggs, goat cheese, and bacon), and also an iced toddy (both of which were oh so good!).
It was SO great to be reunited with these ladies who I missed so, so much while I was away this summer. It was wonderful to catch up on life, and talk all of the exciting things happening in everyone’s lives right now. I truly feel so blessed to have such sweet friends!
What are you up to on this beautiful Sunday?

Get Up, Get Up!

08.11.12

Last evening was one of those nights where everything just fell into place. Scott and I started our evening with a little dinner date, and then went to visit our sweet friend Courtney at her store. We may have also spent a little time in Anthropologie afterward (hello latest issue of Kinfolk!), and then we decided we absolutely needed to drive down to Phoenix to see Jim Adkins and Reubens Accomplice at The Crescent Ballroom. For days we had been debating about going to the Reubens Acoomplice’s cd release show, but figured we would pass this time because Scott had to be super early for work. However, when our friend Gabe tweeted that Jim Adkins (the singer for Jimmy Eat World) would be playing a solo gig as well that evening, we knew we couldn’t pass the show up.
Seeing Jim was really the highlight of the musical portion of the evening for me, but the true highlight was seeing such sweet friends that I had missed so much while I was away. It was also so amazing to be in a room full of people who grew up in the same music scene as Scott and I, and also to hear Reubens Accomplice after so many years. It really was such a special evening!
What did your Friday night look like?

Back Down To The Valley

08.10.12

On Tuesday I made my way back down to the valley and have been enjoying the comforts of home ever since the moment I walked off the plane (but really, the 113 degree weather welcomed me home with a bang). My flight was delayed almost an hour, which made for an interesting wait time at the airport (to the lady who took off her shoes and put them practically in my lap, I hope you never do that again), but once the plane finally took off from the Salt Lake City airport all of my worries washed away and I (im)patiently waited for the plane to land in Phoenix as I watched the clouds, mountains, and lakes below me whiz by.
Seeing Scott as I run out of the terminal is always THE best feeling. I get huge butterflies in my stomach, and it always feel like I can’t walk/fast walk/run fast enough to get past the security check point. Once I do finally make it into this arms, though, everything in the world just feels so right again.
Since I’ve been home I’ve spent lots of time with Scott, my grandmother, and in some of my favorite spots around the Valley. Yesterday I got to visit Sarah and Josh (and their sweet pup Sadie) and it was so wonderful to finally see them after too many weeks away. Today Scott and I are taking it easy, sipping on iced coffee and getting a few errands done.
Being home after being gone for so long truly is the most amazing feeling, and I’m just so happy to be here.
What is brightening your day today?

Staying Safe

08.06.12

I contemplated if writing this post was appropriate, as I generally don’t touch on such heavy topics. However, a multitude of reasons (and a few of your tweets) lead me to believe that someone else could possible benefit from hearing this, and to me that out ways everything else.

Yesterday I had an incident while out alone. In reality, it could be seen as no big deal (it was over in minutes and I was left unharmed). On the other hand, however, it can also be seen as being a very big deal, and for this I feel it’s important to talk about it.
While out running errands in a fairly small, fairly unfamiliar town I was placed in a situation that made me question my safety. I had been in a local shopping plaza for about 20 minutes, going to one store, and then to the next to pick up lunch to-go. I walked out to my nearby vehicle, got in and locked the door (I always, ALWAYS keep my car doors locked), and went on to situate my drink/bags in the passenger seat. A minute or so later I heard a knock, knock on my driver side window, and turned around to find a man in his mid-to-late twenties staring at me. In the second, and seconds following the moment I saw him my mind swirled around and thoughts like my locked doors came to mind, and what did he want, and what was I to do if he tried to open the door or brake the window. I knew to keep the doors locked, and the windows up. I wasn’t going to be foolish about this, even if he meant no harm.
Through the window the man kept staring at me, expecting me to roll down the window or open the door. I looked at him and finally asked him what he wanted through the rolled up window, and with a confused face he told me he wanted to ask me a question. I tried to stay calm and asked him what, and he replied that he wanted to know if my truck was for sale. I immediately told him no, and with an “oh” he walked away, down to an old, beat-up car at the end of the parking lot that had another man standing outside, and one-two other people in the car. I drove off as soon as I could get the truck into gear, shaken up a bit, but knowing that I did the right thing.
Now, I feel I should start by saying that in no way does my truck have any kind of writing, sticker, or anything that would indicate that it was for sale. It has an out-of-state plate, and is solely a personal vehicle. Also, I know that maybe the man meant no harm and possibly just wanted to talk to me, but his actions were done in such a way that would make someone worry that his intentions meant otherwise. However, I feel sometimes women (and people in general) can be too trusting, especially in a moment of confusing and disarray, and it’s important to alway be aware and keep yourself in the safest situation possible (especially when you’re alone).
Since this incident occurred the idea of taking self defense classes has been on my mind. I never want to be in a situation where I can’t take care of myself, or be put in a situation because I was not paying attention.
I would love to hear your thoughts/experiences on women’s self defense. Also, please know that I wrote this post in hope that one day I could help someone else who may find themselves in a similar situation.
Sincerely,
Chelsea

The North

08.04.12

Yesterday I finally pre-ordered Stars‘ new album, The North, and I couldn’t be more excited. This time around I decided to purchase the record on vinyl (blue vinyl to be exact!), that way I could eliminate the stress of trying to hunt it down in the future (remember how Scott gifted me all of the Stars records last Christmas? He’s amazing!).
What is making you happy today?
