Hello August!

08.02.12

Yesterday I literally woke up and the first thing I said was, “I’m so happy it’s August!” Ok, maybe THE very first thing I said was Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit, but that is beside the point (anyone else a little superstitious?). For years August has always held so many great moments and memories for myself, and I usually end up in a state of nostalgia for the entire month (definitely not complaining about that though!).
August is also the month that most holds memories tied to music for me, so I thought I would share a little list of my favorite August jams with you.
1. Jack’s Mannequin – Everything in Transit
2. Anthony Green – Avalon
3. The Decemeberists – The King is Dead
4. Jenny and Johnny – I’m Having Fun Now
5. Rilo Kiley – Under The Blacklight
Do you have any favorite “August albums”?

Dear Scout

07.31.12

Today I thought I would do a little post on my pup, Scout. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Scout is the newest, tiniest addition to our family. He is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and was born in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is 13 weeks old, and has the sweetest disposition. After more than two months of waiting, my family and I were finally able to bring him home three weeks ago. My mother is responsible for finding him, and my dad is responsible for researching his breed like crazy before we welcomed him home.

When I lost my beloved pup of 16 years back in March I was absolutely devastated, and it’s still something I’m coping with today. The thought of bringing a new puppy into my life brought tears to my eyes, as I couldn’t imagine ever trying to replace him. At first the idea of bringing Scout home frankly scared me, but when our eyes finally met I understood why he was meant to be in our family. It’s something that is awfully hard to explain, but our connection was instant and powerful. I would like to think that Jake sent him to us, knowing how much joy he would bring to our lives.
His sweet disposition, easy going attitude, and spunkiness makes for the best companion a girl could ask for. He likes to be held, he likes to play with toys, and he likes to cuddle at bed time.
He likes it when you make funny noises, and when you chase him around and around.

In the three short weeks that we’ve had him the impact he has made on my family is amazing. A few nights ago Elizabeth from Delightfully Tacky tweeted to me that she thought dogs were the best antidepressant, and I couldn’t agree with her more.

So here’s to a very long, and very happy life with my pup Scout. I am so thankful for your love, and for coming into our family exactly when you did. Welcome home!
With all my love,
Chelsea

Dot On Dot

07.30.12

Hello! I hope everyone’s weekend went swimmingly well. My weekend was quite interesting, and filled with time spent playing with my puppy Scout. It’s amazing how much he has grown just in the past few weeks, and how much his personality is starting to shine through. I swear, this little guy has so much spunk!
Recently I was digging through my wardrobe (the start of what would be some pre-fall cleaning) and I stumbled upon this sweet dress. It was a bit of a chilly evening, so I thought I would pair it with my favorite polka dot cardigan and see how into pattern mixing I am. I can always admire a well mixed pattern outfit, but I’m usually afraid to dive into the action of pattern mixing on my own. I guess you can call this dot on dot ensemble my baby steps, baby steps.
Outfit details:
Cardigan: Jcrew
Dress: c/o Lulus
Sandals: Saltwater Sandals
This morning I woke up in Windy Wyoming and I’m hoping for a busy week here. Summer’s end is inching closer, and closer and my heart and mind are getting rather full with plans and hopes for the new school year/new fall season. I may have had a dream about notebooks and Sharpie pens last night! Geez! Haha!
What are you up to today? Are you into pattern mixing?

The Theory of Relativity

07.29.12

When you favorite band (Stars!) releases a new single (leading up to a new album in September!), you listen to it over, and over it again and sing the lyrics as loud as you can. You may also have a solo jam session when the moment is right, and begin to completely obsesses over their older records all over again. Yep, this has been my life lately (I’m loving it!).

I remember one of the first few times I listened to Set Yourself on Fire. I was 16-years-old, and was obsessing over the charming lyrics, melodic voices, and beats like nothing I had heard before. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with Stars, and truly love how much of a positive affect their music can have on my mood.
In other news, I am happy to say that my internet/phone connection is back in action (it was SO poor this past week) and I am excited be back in blogging mode. It’s silly how much my online space depends on one little connection, but alas, I’ve just been trying to roll with the punches. Today is for catching up on a few of my favorite blogs/youtube channels, reading The Night Circus, and planning for the some very exciting upcoming weeks!

My Vintage Ride

07.25.12

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you may know that I have a soft spot in my heart for vintage bicycles. My first was a 1970’s English made Raleigh that I restored at a local bike co-op. A year or so later my beautiful, cream colored Raleigh was stolen and shortly replaced with an early 1970’s, green Schiwnn Speedster (Scott found it at a yard sale and fixed it up for me! It really was a great surprise!).

For the past few years my green Schwinn has treated me well and has seen many bike rides and picnic dates, but recently the aged gears have been giving me troubles and scoring a new-to-me vintage bike has been on my mind. Flash back to a few weeks ago when Scott and I were wandering around a tiny town in Colorado and spotted this beauty at a local garage sale. I felt an instant connection to this sweet ride, but figured I should give it a little thought before I purchased another bike.

About an hour later Scott and I were right back in that same front yard making the seller an offer (she wanted a reasonable price for it and even gave it to us for a little less). She told me that a lady about my size previously owned the bike, and that she had really great energy. After she said that I knew it was meant to be!
This 1970’s Phillips was made in Nottingham, England and was actually manufactured by Raliegh (how cool is that?!). The paint and parts are still in really good conditioned, and there even was an original bike tube in one of the tires (marked Raliegh!).
This cute bike bell was included and the flower on it sort of reminds me of Colorado’s state flower, the Columbine.
This Brooks seat was also included and may be my favorite part of the bike! I’ve always wanted a Brooks seat, but didn’t think I could justify the price. The seat is in amazing condition, and Scott even wonders if someone put the Brooks label on a different seat (I’m less convinced, but the condition still makes me wonder as well).

I’m very excited about the newest addition to our bicycle collection, and can’t wait to ride it more this fall!

Color All Around

07.24.12

Color is something that I struggle with. I’ve always been a plain white, grey, black, and denim kind of girl, and often find myself struggling with the idea of wearing color. In the summer time I am surrounded by so much color (Colorado summers are vibrant!), and it’s hard not to be inspired and moved by it all.

With all this beauty and color around, who wouldn’t want to indulge in the summer spirit a little and pull some color, sunshine, and a little extra motivation into their lives? I know I’m guilty of this crime, but really I don’t mind. Here’s to a colorful rest of the summer!
For years I’ve always respected how Elise, Elsie, and Tieka pull color into their lives. Do you have any color inspirations in your life? What are your favorite colors for summer and fall?

Down By The Underground

07.23.12

When I visit Colorado I like to stick close to a few of my favorite old haunts. Ever year it seems I fall into this alleyway once or twice, smooched in between two, 100-year-old buildings that I’m sure have seen more than I can imagine (perhaps old west gunslingers and ancient vampires, ok, ok, maybe not those…).

Right down at the end of the alleyway is an underground yesterday called The Italian Underground. This 50 seater restaurant is one of my favorite places in town. They have some of the best local cuisine, and are situated in a pretty remarkable space. Every time I go in there I marvel over their sealed, stone floor. It always amazes me that little places like this still exist, and if you’re not looking for it you’ll probably never know anything about the underground.
This morning I have plans to visit the local coffee drive-thru/walk-up…yep, there isn’t a single coffee house in this whole town other than a few coffee trailers! Craziness! Anyways, I’ve really been into keeping up with my Twitter and Instagram (username: Chelseabirdd) lately, and I’m getting SO excited about August and all the possibilities it has for this little blog of mine! If anyone is interested in advertising for the month of August you can email me at Chelsea@Chelsea-Bird.com for more info. I would love to help you grow your blog and/or shop!

On A Stroll

07.20.12

Sometimes I just enjoy walking around town, snapping away on my camera, and taking everything in. Sometimes I can get so caught up in the stresses that can come and go with every day life, so it’s nice to just walk, clear my mind, and sip on a nice cold iced coffee.
Are you found of mind-clearning walks around town?

Delta Darling

07.19.12
Every summer I spent a little time in Delta, CO. The town is filled with murals, and has two really great coffee shops in their cute downtown area. Things are pretty laid back in the town most days, and some of my favorite times down there have been spent sitting on the edge of a dock at a local lake (with my camera and iced coffee in hand, of course!).
Lately I’ve been really loving this vest I bought back in my freshman year of college (still complete with The Format pin I put on it when back when). I feel like this vest is just one of those pieces that I’ll never be able to part with. I’m such a sucker for denim classics!
This morning I did a little running around with my mom, which may have involved a stop at Starbucks for some iced coffee and a little nail polish shopping. I picked up a few polishes from the new metallics line from Essie. I’m not usually one for metallic, but the rose gold shade and sparkly blue were just too pretty to pass up. What I’m really waiting for is the Essie fall line though! It’s something I look forward to ever year! Do you have a favorite shade from Essie?

Paonia Coffee

07.18.12
I have a favorite coffee shop in Paonia, CO that Scott and I always stop at every year. The tiny coffee shop is situated in an old house, and is more than cozy. Every day they have an assortment of pastries and savory dishes fresh from their kitchen, and their coffee is pretty great too.

On our breakfast date Scott got a piece of a salmon quiche, and I got a spinach and feta croissant. We may have also shared a cherry scone (in honor of the Cherry Days Festival that week!), which was probably the best scone I’ve ever had!
I really do cherish our breakfast dates, and was happy that we were able to have a nice one while Scott was visiting. Only a few more weeks and we won’t have to be miles and miles apart!
Have you been on any good breakfast dates lately? Where’s your favorite place to get breakfast/coffee?
