Forgotten Train Tracks
09.08.11
The week is already almost over and I still have so much to do! Everything that I ever heard about Grad school is true! Reading will rule your life and coffee will be your only beverage of choice (ok, I already had that one down, but still).

09.07.11An interview with Holly of Create Loves
09.06.11Today we have a lovely interview with Holly of Create Loves. Holly is a sweet lady of many talents and trades. She spends her days being a momma to two littles (and has one of the way!), stylin up pretty hair (from time to time now that she’s a SAHM), and crafts up some of the pretties scrapbooking and cross stitching pieces I’ve ever seen! She is also a proud Red Velvet Girl and comes down from Canada whenever she can to spend time with the other sweet RV girls (Elsie, Rachel, Emma and Katie!).
-I’m currently a Stay at Home Mom, living in a small Canadian Prairie town. I’m also a trained hairstylist and own a salon & spa business with my husband. I’m staying at home with my kids while awaiting the arrival of our third child in January. I enjoy dressing up, going out for coffee/tea, knitting & crocheting, pretty tattoos, collecting vintage dresses for my daughter, and overall being creative with my day to day life.
2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?
-I started my blog, Create*Loves, after my first son was born. He inspired me to start scrapbooking, and I wanted an outlet to share my layouts, and my photos, as I was also getting into photography at that time. I found it to be a good connection to “the world” as I stayed at home during his first year. I’ve been blogging since 2007.
3. Can you tell us about your style?
4. You’re involved with Red Velvet Art and are one of the Red Velvet girls yourself! How has being a Red Velvet girl influenced your style, and outlook on design aesthetic (anything from sewing, knitting, painting, etc.)?
-Being involved with Red Velvet Art is such a highlight in my life! In more ways than one, too. Being a Red Velvet girl has influenced my style by giving me more confidence to wear vintage. All the girls have such fantastic style, and I’m always inspired by how they put together an outfit. It’s also taught me how to find “the goods” at thrift stores and flea markets. I have better perspective on the potential for a piece I find while thrifting. Those girls are gifted in repurposing found items. I’m constantly encouraged by the girls in my talents, and in my blogging as well. We find it important to share thoughts and ideas, and encourage and inspire each other in the process. Seeing the RV Dress Lines take shape and seeing their success has helped me realize that dreams are not just dreams… with a lot of hard work and support, they can become a rewarding reality. I’m still learning about product design, and how I can contribute to Red Velvet. It’s so much fun!
5. What are your favorite trends for fall?
-Head scarves, wide leg, leather, and ponchos. Don’t forget a deep dark shade for your manicure. (think Lincoln Park After Dark, or Russian Navy by OPI)
6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?
-When I’m not blogging, I’m running around after my kids, trying to keep up with my household! Two kids are a handful, but they come first. I usually blog after they have gone to sleep. I knit, drink tea, shop online, and enjoy baking when I can. I also like dreaming up decor ideas for my children’s rooms, and etsy shopping for them and their space.
7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?
-Orla Kiely is a huge source of inspiration for me. From the patterns & colors, to the collection videos, to the designs themselves. I fall in love with every one of her pieces. I also draw inspiration from mid-century modern designs. The Red Velvet girls are a major source of inspiration to me when it comes to utilizing vintage in my wardrobe. I follow a number of fashion blogs and enjoy reading them daily to refresh my outlook on current trends.
8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?
-That’s are hard choice to make! It would have to be a nice pair of wide leg denim, layers on top with a quality cardigan or blazer, bold scarf, flats, retro sunnies (Orla Kiely’s sunglasses are on my wish list, Ditzy Clover please) 😉 and a great leather bag.
9. You’re a momma of two, and have one of the way! How has being a mom affected your style, and what have you found to be your best “fashion friend” while being pregnant?
-Being pregnant is not a time that I totally enjoy. With the discomforts, and fluctuating weight, it makes it hard to dress in anything except what’s comfortable and practical… This time around I have challenged myself to not put my style on hold while awaiting this baby, and embrace a new maternity style. I find that dresses are most flattering, especially ones with empire waists. I feel like I’ve been “pregnant” for the last 5 years (no joke) and have found it very hard on my style. It’s easy to give up on it, and feel frumpy and dissatisfied with your image when your pregnant. I’m embracing my growing self this time around and finding ways to still dress feminine and fun. Maternity leggings or Bella Bands are awesome for making me feel more comfortable with the baby bump. I have a weekly Maternity Style feature on my blog, so you can see how I dress as I progress in this pregnancy.
10. Do you have any advice for aspiring lifestyle bloggers? What about for someone searching for their true style, but is having a hard time pinpointing it.
-My biggest advice would be not to let it get competitive. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you don’t have anything good to offer compared to other fashion/lifestyle blogs. Comparing yourself to others can lead to an unhealthy competitive nature. Staying true to yourself, and blogging about what YOU love and what YOU are interested in, is what makes a good blog. For those searching for their true style: experiment! Surround yourself with things and people that make you the most happy, and embrace it. It takes time… I’m still pinpointing my true style, but it’s a process that can be a very positive one, when you stay true to yourself. Wake up in the morning and tell yourself “I am interesting, and I have a lot to offer.” Positivity.
Thank you SO much for doing this interview, Holly! Don’t forget to check out Holly’s blog and keep up with her sweet Twitter page!

Sweets at The Coffee Shop
09.03.11On Thursday before I headed up north Scott and I drove to The Coffee Shop in Gilbert to pick up some sweets to bring to up to my parents. The shop is situated on the Agritopia farm, and serves the most delicious treats.
Mesa Afternoon
09.02.11Have I ever mentioned how thoughtful Scott is, well, he is incredibly thoughtful and is always thinking of me, even when he’s out shopping! Over the summer while I was nowhere near my favorite Levi’s store he went looking through the stores to see if he could find himself and I any great deals. Well, on one particular day (he did this a few times this summer), he left with the most darling summer dress for myself.

Sun Drenched Arches
09.01.11It’s September! I am so excited that this month is finally here! Since it doesn’t officially get to be fall approved temperatures in Phoenix until late October, I’ve decided that September is the official start of fall for myself. I’m so looking forward to pumpkin spice lattes, lots of layers, warm colors, pretty sceneries, and the hope of cooler temperatures.
August Monsoon
08.31.11Lately the temperatures have been almost unbearable. 116 and 117 during the day, and nothing below 90 or high during the night. Every once and awhile, though, the clouds darken, the wind picks up, and rain comes down from the sky to cool down my big city. I’m always thankful when monsoon roles around, as I don’t think I could survive without a little break from the sweltering heat.
An interview with Mallory of Mallory Makes Things
08.30.11Today we have a lovely interview with Mallory of Mallory Makes Things. Mallory is a fashion design student who has a love for vintage, sewing, and spending time with her sweet boyfriend, Brian. She is also a part of the amazing Red Velvet team and has been involved in the design and production processes of their spring line, and soon-to-be launched fall line.

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
-My name is Mallory, I’m a 21 year old fashion design student. I blog over at Mallory Makes Things. I’m obsessed with vintage design, color, and bold prints.
2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?
-I started my blog after watching Julie & Julia for the first time in August 2009. That seems so ridiculous, but I needed a creative outlet that would get me away from the stresses of school. Little did I know that it would help me find a way to connect with other fashion and vintage lovers. I don’t think I started finding my blogging voice until last summer, though.
3. Can you tell us about your style?
-My style… hmm… some people may call it crazy. I prefer to call it bold, eclectic, and vintage inspired. I truly wear whatever I feel like even if it seems insane. My motto is: If you act like you’re pulling it off, then you are.
4. You’re a part of the amazing Red Velvet team who has been designing and sewing up the new Red Velvet line that is set to launch September 1st! What has been your favorite thing about this whole experience, and what is your most favorite garment that you’ve made for the Spring or Fall line?
-I think my favorite part of working with Red Velvet has been learning so much. This has been a year of self-discovery for me. This winter I made a whole dress line with my own two hands for one of my role models, Elsie. Beforehand I thought I would collapse from the pressure, but I made it out alive and ecstatic. Now I’m doing it with a team, which is great because and I’m getting to partner with and teach the other interns. I feel like the experience here has made me certain that I’ve found my own place in the fashion world. Elsie and Emma (and the whole team) have done a lot to help me feel like I can make my own dreams come true. They are incredibly supportive and encouraging.
My favorite garment is a really tough one. I am bad at choosing favorites, but from the spring probably the Record Store Jumper and this fall the Flower Shop Dress.
5. What are your favorite trends for fall?
– really excited that high waist bell-bottoms are making a comeback! Unexpected color and pattern mixing always gets me, so I am delighted that more designers and fashionistas are trying it out for this fall.
6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?
-When I’m taking classes my favorite thing to do is nap because sleep is hard to come by. Other than that I love going thrifting and to the record store with my boyfriend. I really enjoy my mom’s cooking, and hanging out with family and friends. In my alone time you can find me internet shopping, fashion drawing, or watercolor painting.
7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?
-I find most of my inspiration in artwork, photographs, music, and those beautiful moments that sneak into everyday life. My favorite designers/brands include Kate Spade, Orla Kiely, and Dior.
8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?
-High waist jean shorts, a vintage scarf for my hair, a white V neck t-shirt I stole from Brian, and my Darlingtonia mocassins.
9. You’re a fashion design student who is well on her way to making a serious name for yourself (jump starting two collections of clothing is amazing in my book) How has being a fashion design student affected the way you think about fashion, and how has it affected the way you dress, if so?
-College for fashion and growing up in general has changed everything about the way I view all design. In high school I tried to blend in a little too much. I’ve always liked vintage and bold fashion statements but I was afraid. Now, my teachers really encourage us to find our unique style and begin to brand ourselves. I’ve started to dress and design exactly how I want to because of it. Being yourself, even if it makes your stand out, is easy when everyone is telling you that it’s important to do so. We also do a lot of trend forecasting in our design processes. When you do that much research it comes natural to evolve with the trends. I don’t feel as mystified as I used to. The fashion industry holds a LOT of surprises until you do some digging and learning.
10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion designers? What about for someone interested in learning how to sew clothing, but really doesn’t know where to start?
-It’s a competitive field, but you can make it if you’re prepared and determined. Do some research and go to a good school. Graduating knowing who you are and with experience and a full set of skills will make all the difference. Whether you want a corporate job or to start your own line I think school is a good idea. I go to the University of Cincinnati and it’s a tough program, but it’s worth it. I will graduate with 6 internships on my resume!
If you want to learn how to sew clothes for yourself start with Elsie and I’s DIY Dress Up E-course. Not everything will be perfect right away, sewing is a skill that you can hone with practice.
Thank you SO much for doing this interview, Mallory! Be sure to check out Mallory’s blog, and also keep an eye out for the new Red Velvet line that is set to launch September 1st!
