White Lattice

09.09.11
Ya know that saying, “Don’t go to bed mad,” well I think there should be a similar saying that goes “Don’t go to bed stressed.” Yep, it’s already happened. The grad school gods have thrown their storms down on me and now I’m just trying to swim through. Today is a new day though, and I’m ready to handle things in a new manner.

With my new school schedule I only attend an actual in-person class once a week for three hours. During my time as an undergraduate I was so used to getting up every morning, making myself look presentable, and rushing off to campus to attend class and study during my in-between breaks. Now that I don’t have that schedule anymore, I’m finding it easy to fall into this lull that I do not want to be in. So I’ve decided that I need to make more of an effort to get up early, great my day with a fun outfit, and go someplace other than my home that I know I can be productive in. It’s just like my old routine, but new and improved!
This outfit is really made me feel good about myself. I felt like the put together Grad School student that I know I should be. I still find it so hard to believe sometimes that my schooling now has nothing to do with Journalism. What used to seem like my whole world has now changed and repositioned itself in my life. I guess that’s growing up though!
It’s the weekend and I’m really excited to have a blogger meet-up with Brandi and her sweet little girl! There will also be yoga with Courtney, and lots of homework to be done this weekend. I think a movie should be thrown in the mix as well, ya know, just to even things out.

Forgotten Train Tracks

09.08.11
So since the temperatures are still not cooperating, I’m just going to dress in fall colors and pretend I live in New England where I’m sure the weather is crisp and the fall nostalgia that comes along with September and November is in the air.
To be honest, I always felt like I would do well as a New Englander, maybe it’s just because of the amazing fall weather that I hear so much about, or all of these basement shows I missed out as a teenager (ya know, because it would have been amazing to see Brand New in their heyday).
But alas, I’m a born and raised West coast girl (Southwest if we’re getting specific) and basement shows and cool weather are few and far between here (well, at least until winter comes with regards to weather, and we do have The Nile Basement back in action nowadays).
My sweet sponsor Lulu’s sent me this pretty zig zag top. The heavy material makes it perfect for layering in fall and winter, but with the never ending heat spell we are having, it was perfect to wear with a cami and my Seychelle booties that I have been waiting all summer to wear. Did I mention the colors in the top just scream fall to me? Remember what I said about dressing the fall part? Well, here is my first attempt!

The week is already almost over and I still have so much to do! Everything that I ever heard about Grad school is true! Reading will rule your life and coffee will be your only beverage of choice (ok, I already had that one down, but still).
Jeans: Levi’s
Belt: Levi’s
Seychelle Hawkeye Booties: Amazon
I’m really excited for yoga with Courtney, and a coffee date/blogger meet-up with Brandi this weekend. What are you excited for?

Tempe Lake

09.07.11
September has only begun and so far it’s turning into a lovely month! I spent the past weekend enjoying the cool weather of Northern Arizona, and now the temperatures in Phoenix are finally starting to cool down! And when I say cool down, I mean it’s going to be 103 instead of 116! This girl is truly happy!
Yesterday was such a busy, and productive day. I got up (not so early as planned) and headed to my local Starbucks for my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season, then ran a few random errands, had lunch with my love, went to a meeting later on the in afternoon, and spent some time down by Tempe Town Lake.
I always forget that there is a “beach side” to the lake, so since the weather was nice (read: bearable) and the sunset was looking like it was going to be a beautiful one, Scott and I thought it would be fun to head down to the lake. The views from this side are always gorgeous, and I love watching the light rail as is zooms by right over the lake.
Now that September is here I’m planning out some fun fall activities, dreaming of PSL’s and apple cider, and looking forward to the cooler weather. I’m also so excited to celebrate Scott and I’s five year anniversary next month. It’s crazy to think how fast the time has gone by. We were just teenagers when we met and fell in love!

Since this week has already seem to disappear before my eyes (having a holiday on Monday always messes me up for the week), I’m now going to really lock down and get some serious reading and homework done for my classes. Grad school seems to require so much more reading than my undergraduate studies, and this is definitely something that’s going to take some time getting used to. If only I took speed reading in high school like my mom did!

An interview with Holly of Create Loves

09.06.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Holly of Create Loves. Holly is a sweet lady of many talents and trades. She spends her days being a momma to two littles (and has one of the way!), stylin up pretty hair (from time to time now that she’s a SAHM), and crafts up some of the pretties scrapbooking and cross stitching pieces I’ve ever seen! She is also a proud Red Velvet Girl and comes down from Canada whenever she can to spend time with the other sweet RV girls (Elsie, Rachel, Emma and Katie!).

Meet Holly:
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-I’m currently a Stay at Home Mom, living in a small Canadian Prairie town. I’m also a trained hairstylist and own a salon & spa business with my husband. I’m staying at home with my kids while awaiting the arrival of our third child in January. I enjoy dressing up, going out for coffee/tea, knitting & crocheting, pretty tattoos, collecting vintage dresses for my daughter, and overall being creative with my day to day life.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

-I started my blog, Create*Loves, after my first son was born. He inspired me to start scrapbooking, and I wanted an outlet to share my layouts, and my photos, as I was also getting into photography at that time. I found it to be a good connection to “the world” as I stayed at home during his first year. I’ve been blogging since 2007.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-I don’t like to limit myself to one type of style, and like to play around with different styles. I like to incorporate a vintage piece, detail, or hairstyle into my looks, and am growing my vintage wardrobe. I dress with simple, classic pieces, and play it up with accessories or hairstyles to showcase my creative side. I lean toward neutrals, and cozy textiles. I swoon over retro silhouettes, and romantic feminine dresses.

4. You’re involved with Red Velvet Art and are one of the Red Velvet girls yourself! How has being a Red Velvet girl influenced your style, and outlook on design aesthetic (anything from sewing, knitting, painting, etc.)?

-Being involved with Red Velvet Art is such a highlight in my life! In more ways than one, too. Being a Red Velvet girl has influenced my style by giving me more confidence to wear vintage. All the girls have such fantastic style, and I’m always inspired by how they put together an outfit. It’s also taught me how to find “the goods” at thrift stores and flea markets. I have better perspective on the potential for a piece I find while thrifting. Those girls are gifted in repurposing found items. I’m constantly encouraged by the girls in my talents, and in my blogging as well. We find it important to share thoughts and ideas, and encourage and inspire each other in the process. Seeing the RV Dress Lines take shape and seeing their success has helped me realize that dreams are not just dreams… with a lot of hard work and support, they can become a rewarding reality. I’m still learning about product design, and how I can contribute to Red Velvet. It’s so much fun!

5. What are your favorite trends for fall?

-Head scarves, wide leg, leather, and ponchos. Don’t forget a deep dark shade for your manicure. (think Lincoln Park After Dark, or Russian Navy by OPI)

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-When I’m not blogging, I’m running around after my kids, trying to keep up with my household! Two kids are a handful, but they come first. I usually blog after they have gone to sleep. I knit, drink tea, shop online, and enjoy baking when I can. I also like dreaming up decor ideas for my children’s rooms, and etsy shopping for them and their space.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

-Orla Kiely is a huge source of inspiration for me. From the patterns & colors, to the collection videos, to the designs themselves. I fall in love with every one of her pieces. I also draw inspiration from mid-century modern designs. The Red Velvet girls are a major source of inspiration to me when it comes to utilizing vintage in my wardrobe. I follow a number of fashion blogs and enjoy reading them daily to refresh my outlook on current trends.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-That’s are hard choice to make! It would have to be a nice pair of wide leg denim, layers on top with a quality cardigan or blazer, bold scarf, flats, retro sunnies (Orla Kiely’s sunglasses are on my wish list, Ditzy Clover please) 😉 and a great leather bag.

9. You’re a momma of two, and have one of the way! How has being a mom affected your style, and what have you found to be your best “fashion friend” while being pregnant?

-Being pregnant is not a time that I totally enjoy. With the discomforts, and fluctuating weight, it makes it hard to dress in anything except what’s comfortable and practical… This time around I have challenged myself to not put my style on hold while awaiting this baby, and embrace a new maternity style. I find that dresses are most flattering, especially ones with empire waists. I feel like I’ve been “pregnant” for the last 5 years (no joke) and have found it very hard on my style. It’s easy to give up on it, and feel frumpy and dissatisfied with your image when your pregnant. I’m embracing my growing self this time around and finding ways to still dress feminine and fun. Maternity leggings or Bella Bands are awesome for making me feel more comfortable with the baby bump. I have a weekly Maternity Style feature on my blog, so you can see how I dress as I progress in this pregnancy.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring lifestyle bloggers? What about for someone searching for their true style, but is having a hard time pinpointing it.

-My biggest advice would be not to let it get competitive. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you don’t have anything good to offer compared to other fashion/lifestyle blogs. Comparing yourself to others can lead to an unhealthy competitive nature. Staying true to yourself, and blogging about what YOU love and what YOU are interested in, is what makes a good blog. For those searching for their true style: experiment! Surround yourself with things and people that make you the most happy, and embrace it. It takes time… I’m still pinpointing my true style, but it’s a process that can be a very positive one, when you stay true to yourself. Wake up in the morning and tell yourself “I am interesting, and I have a lot to offer.” Positivity.

Thank you SO much for doing this interview, Holly! Don’t forget to check out Holly’s blog and keep up with her sweet Twitter page!

Sweets at The Coffee Shop

09.03.11

On Thursday before I headed up north Scott and I drove to The Coffee Shop in Gilbert to pick up some sweets to bring to up to my parents. The shop is situated on the Agritopia farm, and serves the most delicious treats.

I love all of the cactus in front of their sign! SO very Arizona!

They had delicious looking whoopie pies, coffee by the pound, and vegan cupcakes.

They were serve the most amazing looking scones and muffins! I seriously could have tried one of everything!
And then there was the cupcakes, we got two dozen to go!
Scott and I also split a pumpkin spice whoopie. It was seriously the best whoopie pie I’ve ever had!
I might have also gotten one of their iced coffees to go. YUM!
If you’re local and have never checked out The Coffee Shop, I highly suggest doing so! And for those who are not local, just know that last summer the shop won on Cupcakes Wars! It was seriously the neatest thing to have a local cupcake shop win! This past summer my favorite cookie and cupcake shop, Urban Cookies, won the wars as well! I’m honestly so proud of both shops!
What are you up to today? What’s your favorite sweet treat?

Mesa Afternoon

09.02.11

Have I ever mentioned how thoughtful Scott is, well, he is incredibly thoughtful and is always thinking of me, even when he’s out shopping! Over the summer while I was nowhere near my favorite Levi’s store he went looking through the stores to see if he could find himself and I any great deals. Well, on one particular day (he did this a few times this summer), he left with the most darling summer dress for myself.

This sweet little chambray number has been perfect for the hot, hot days we’ve been having around here. I love the detail in the top, and the little tie around the waist. It’s going to be the perfect dress to style up for fall. I’m already thinking some warm colored tights, these darling Blowfish boots, an oversized cardigan, and my favorite leather bag would look great together! I wish that I could already put these outfits into action! Only a few more months, ha!

Another sweet thing about Scott going shopping for me is that the staff at Levi’s also knows my style pretty well and like to suggest to Scott items that I might like. They know I’m always on the hunt for a good sale, and will tell him and I when they’ve added something new to the sale section. I really think that a friendship with your favorite clothing store staff is a valuable thing! You’ve always got someone looking out for you when you’re shopping (in a sincere way!).
This weekend Scott and I had a sweet little coffee date while he was on his break from work. After he left I stayed longer and got some work done for school and the blog. I love trying out new coffee shops to work out because you never know where you will comfortable until you try. I spent years at the same coffee shop, so I figure it’s time for a change!
Do you like to switch up which coffee shops you go to? Does your guy or significant other pick out clothes for you?

Sun Drenched Arches

09.01.11

It’s September! I am so excited that this month is finally here! Since it doesn’t officially get to be fall approved temperatures in Phoenix until late October, I’ve decided that September is the official start of fall for myself. I’m so looking forward to pumpkin spice lattes, lots of layers, warm colors, pretty sceneries, and the hope of cooler temperatures.

Early this week Scott and I went to Joe’s Farm Grill for some grilled cheese and bbq. The farm grill sits on the beautiful Agritopia community, so while we were waiting for our food we took a little walk through their darling gardens.

The sun was setting and the colors of the sun drenched grape leaves were putting me in the best mood for fall. It really is true what you hear about these Arizona sunsets, they are definitely the most beautiful ones in world.
Awhile back the sweet folks at Emerging Thoughts sent me this beautiful Jasper and Quartz heart necklace. The stones making the heart are beautiful, and I just love the length of the delicate chain. It’s also handmade, and one of a kind! I think it would look darling layered with some chunky knits and pretty sweaters for fall!

Today I would also like to announce that I am now officially a freelance blogger/writer for The Phoenix New Times’ culture blog, Jackalope Ranch. I’m very excited about this new endeavor, and can’t wait to get a few posts under my belt! If you’re a reader, keep your eyes peeled for my posts coming soon!

While out taking these photos Scott and I spotted a few areas in Gilbert we want to explore more! There are so many cute farms and farming areas out there! Do any of you know of any good spots in Gilbert that would be worth checking out?

August Monsoon

08.31.11

Lately the temperatures have been almost unbearable. 116 and 117 during the day, and nothing below 90 or high during the night. Every once and awhile, though, the clouds darken, the wind picks up, and rain comes down from the sky to cool down my big city. I’m always thankful when monsoon roles around, as I don’t think I could survive without a little break from the sweltering heat.

For the past few days I’ve been sticking to light layers, and a practically no-make routine. I burn pretty easily in the sun, so I always wear sunscreen, but lately I’ve been staying away fro mascara and face make-up. Some days it’s just nice to go make-up free and give my skin a little breather.
My sweet sponsor Threadcase sent me this pretty dress. I really love the stripes, and the breeziness of fabric. I had fun twirling around in the monsoon winds we were having, and felt very feminine and pretty. I just love how clothes can affect your mood. If I’m ever feeling crummy I love to put on something pretty and get an iced coffee. Almost always my mood instantly improves. The power of darling clothes and iced coffee is truly amazing!
During this holiday weekend I am escaping to norther Arizona to visit my parents. I’m hoping to go on a mini-adventure through a nearby forrest! The weather up there is definitely much cooler, so I’m hoping to get some fall outfits in! Sweaters, tights, boots! ECK! I can’t wait!

How do you stay cool in the hot, hot heat? Do you have any plans for the holiday weekend?

An interview with Mallory of Mallory Makes Things

08.30.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Mallory of Mallory Makes Things. Mallory is a fashion design student who has a love for vintage, sewing, and spending time with her sweet boyfriend, Brian. She is also a part of the amazing Red Velvet team and has been involved in the design and production processes of their spring line, and soon-to-be launched fall line.

Meet Mallory:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-My name is Mallory, I’m a 21 year old fashion design student. I blog over at Mallory Makes Things. I’m obsessed with vintage design, color, and bold prints.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

-I started my blog after watching Julie & Julia for the first time in August 2009. That seems so ridiculous, but I needed a creative outlet that would get me away from the stresses of school. Little did I know that it would help me find a way to connect with other fashion and vintage lovers. I don’t think I started finding my blogging voice until last summer, though.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-My style… hmm… some people may call it crazy. I prefer to call it bold, eclectic, and vintage inspired. I truly wear whatever I feel like even if it seems insane. My motto is: If you act like you’re pulling it off, then you are.

4. You’re a part of the amazing Red Velvet team who has been designing and sewing up the new Red Velvet line that is set to launch September 1st! What has been your favorite thing about this whole experience, and what is your most favorite garment that you’ve made for the Spring or Fall line?

-I think my favorite part of working with Red Velvet has been learning so much. This has been a year of self-discovery for me. This winter I made a whole dress line with my own two hands for one of my role models, Elsie. Beforehand I thought I would collapse from the pressure, but I made it out alive and ecstatic. Now I’m doing it with a team, which is great because and I’m getting to partner with and teach the other interns. I feel like the experience here has made me certain that I’ve found my own place in the fashion world. Elsie and Emma (and the whole team) have done a lot to help me feel like I can make my own dreams come true. They are incredibly supportive and encouraging.

My favorite garment is a really tough one. I am bad at choosing favorites, but from the spring probably the Record Store Jumper and this fall the Flower Shop Dress.

5. What are your favorite trends for fall?

– really excited that high waist bell-bottoms are making a comeback! Unexpected color and pattern mixing always gets me, so I am delighted that more designers and fashionistas are trying it out for this fall.

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-When I’m taking classes my favorite thing to do is nap because sleep is hard to come by. Other than that I love going thrifting and to the record store with my boyfriend. I really enjoy my mom’s cooking, and hanging out with family and friends. In my alone time you can find me internet shopping, fashion drawing, or watercolor painting.

7. With regards to fashion, what do you draw inspiration from?

-I find most of my inspiration in artwork, photographs, music, and those beautiful moments that sneak into everyday life. My favorite designers/brands include Kate Spade, Orla Kiely, and Dior.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-High waist jean shorts, a vintage scarf for my hair, a white V neck t-shirt I stole from Brian, and my Darlingtonia mocassins.

9. You’re a fashion design student who is well on her way to making a serious name for yourself (jump starting two collections of clothing is amazing in my book) How has being a fashion design student affected the way you think about fashion, and how has it affected the way you dress, if so?

-College for fashion and growing up in general has changed everything about the way I view all design. In high school I tried to blend in a little too much. I’ve always liked vintage and bold fashion statements but I was afraid. Now, my teachers really encourage us to find our unique style and begin to brand ourselves. I’ve started to dress and design exactly how I want to because of it. Being yourself, even if it makes your stand out, is easy when everyone is telling you that it’s important to do so. We also do a lot of trend forecasting in our design processes. When you do that much research it comes natural to evolve with the trends. I don’t feel as mystified as I used to. The fashion industry holds a LOT of surprises until you do some digging and learning.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring fashion designers? What about for someone interested in learning how to sew clothing, but really doesn’t know where to start?

-It’s a competitive field, but you can make it if you’re prepared and determined. Do some research and go to a good school. Graduating knowing who you are and with experience and a full set of skills will make all the difference. Whether you want a corporate job or to start your own line I think school is a good idea. I go to the University of Cincinnati and it’s a tough program, but it’s worth it. I will graduate with 6 internships on my resume!

If you want to learn how to sew clothes for yourself start with Elsie and I’s DIY Dress Up E-course. Not everything will be perfect right away, sewing is a skill that you can hone with practice.

Thank you SO much for doing this interview, Mallory! Be sure to check out Mallory’s blog, and also keep an eye out for the new Red Velvet line that is set to launch September 1st!
