50mm V 2.0

05.06.11
It’s safe to say that my 50mm lens offers a dream like quality to each and every photo I snap. Here is a look at Scott and I’s afternoon Wednesday:

Today Scott has a huge project due, and I need to work on my final article. Before I start though I’m taking a break to sip some iced coffee and reflect. Did I mention I got into grad school?

What are you up today?

Much Love, Chelsea

05.05.11
Over the last few months I have had some amazing opportunities to meet some of the sweetest blogging girls around. In March I met so many wonderful ladies at the AZ Blogger Meet-up, and soon after I met a handful of wonderful, talented girls who were in town for the Creative Estates conference. One of the sweet ladies I had the opportunity to meet was Ilene of Much Love, Illy. Since our meet-up last month we have kept in touch, and she has been sweet enough to send me one of her pretty poppy headbands that I’ve been eyeing forever now!
Headband: gift from Ilene of Much Love, Illy; Cardigan: J Crew; Jeans: Levi’s; Sandals: Sofft
It’s safe to say that I’m in love with the color of pretty headband! It makes me think of fall, and inspired this very fall like outfit. I know it’s almost summer, but I believe that I will always carry around with me this fall sense-of-mind. I just want nice weather, pretty colored leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, and fun fall outings all year round!
In other news, this summer I will be spending time in Colorado with my family. Every summer my family goes there for work (planning events) and I usually come along for the ride to help (that way I can work during the summer and save for the fall). It’s going to be very hard to be away from Scott, but we’ve been spending the summers apart for our whole relationship so I know we will be just fine. Sometime around early July he will be coming up to visit me and I honestly can’t already wait! I just love traveling around with him, going on adventures and visiting all my favorite spots.

For the most part I will be around the Grand Junction area, but will most likely stopping in Denver to visit family. I plan on blogging the whole time I’m gone, and will give it my best attempt to take outfit photos on my own throughout the towns I will be stopping in. Here’s to hoping I can get the hang of taking my own photos quickly!

Have I mentioned yet how cold it might still be up in Colorado? I’m used to 95 degree days now, and last summer I went up there it was snowing. Lets hope that doesn’t happen again!
Have you ever been to Colorado? If so, which part?

Well Educated

05.04.11
I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday! This week is just whizzing by! I want to say thank you to everyone who left me a sweet birthday comment, tweet, or text. All of your kind words certainly made my birthday that much more special. I am so thankful to be surrounded be such wonderful, positive people. So thank you all for the very special birthday wishes.
In other news, Scott and I have been up to our ears in homework and studying for finals, but we’re getting by just fine. It’s crazy to think this is my last finals session as an undergraduate!

Cardigan: gift; Dress: Old Navy; knee highs: c/o We Love Colors; Boots: Steve Madden

Button-up: Levi’s; Jeans: Quicksilver; Shoes: Sperry’s
Even though school has been taking over, we still have been trying to take the time to have a little fun. We both really love taking walks around downtown Mesa, and eating yummy ice cream and sorbet from Cold Stone. During this time of stress, I feel like it’s the little things that count most. It’s always nice to take a breather and remember why you’re working so hard, and why you care so much.
Lately I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on my career as a college student. I started at a two year community college knowing that I wanted to major in Journalism. My first semester was rough. I remember being so overwhelmed with my classes, and the whole idea of being in college. During that time I was thankful my mother pushed me to go to community college, as I don’t think I could have made it at a big university yet.
A year later Scott joined me at community college, and I was so happy that he was there. He would walk me to class, carry my books, and meet-up with me during breaks. I really didn’t have many friends at school, so I was always thankful to have him there to keep me sane.
A year and half later I headed off to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. At this point my school had only been in its new location in downtown Phoenix for one semester, so the classes were significantly small, and not many people were ever around. Looking back now I am very thankful for that transition time. Every semester after that the classes would get bigger, and the student population would continue to grow.
It took me five years to finish my undergraduate degree, which is something I am not ashamed of. Most of the people I grew up around finished in four years, but for me, I needed that extra year. I am very thankful that I gave myself that extra time to only take 12 to 13 credit hours a semester. Anything else would have been too much, and my grades would not have come out as well as they did if I had done that for myself.
So as I get ready to completely walk away from the Cronkite school and my career as an undergraduate, I can only think about how happy I am with the education path I chose. There truly couldn’t have been a better major for myself, or a better place to go to school. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to attend such a prestigious school, and will forever be thankful that such a place existed so close to home.
So three cheers for my education, life at Cronkite, and my pretty new degree that I will be proudly displaying any chance I get.

What did you major in? Where you happy with your choice? What was (is) your college career like?

A New View

05.04.11
For my birthday Scott gave me such a sweet gift, a new 50mm lens for my Canon Rebel. We had been talking about getting this lens for awhile now, as we here it’s good for portraits (outfit photos!), and because it’s an all around great lens. Well, today I took it for a test drive and here is what I came up with:

What are you up to this evening?

An interview with Maggie of Gussy Sews

05.03.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Maggie of Gussy Sews. Maggie has a strong passion for sewing and ruffles, and writes one of the sweetest blogs in the blogosphere. She also runs the very successful Gussy Sews online shop where she makes and sells the prettiest handmade ruffled bags and accessorizes.

Meet Maggie:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name Maggie Whitley ~ a lot of people know me as Gussy, it’s a nickname from Charlotte’s Web and also the name of my blog and handmade shop. My husband, puppy and I live in Minneapolis and we love to walk around our neighborhood and spend time outside. My blog is filled with handmade inspiration and my shop is bursting with ruffled accessories. I’ve been blogging for almost 3 years and I’ve been working on Gussy Sews solely for almost an entire year. My 1 year anniversary is mid-May!

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

I started my first blog in July 2008, just a month after Zack and I got married. Zack actually started it for me, and look at where it got me *wink*

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-My style is influenced by color, comfort and simplicity. I’m very comfortable skinny jeans & a boyfriend sweater – or a pretty floral dress – Lisa Leonard jewelry and a ruffled tote bag.

4. You started the very successful “Gussy Sews” online shop. How did you find your passion for sewing, and what do you love most about working for yourself?

-My passion for sewing really was accidental. In November of 2008 I decided I was going to learn the trade, so I checked out 30 library books and spent the next few days reading them, discarding any tutorials or articles that didn’t make sense. Sewing is a backwards, upside down, inside out process. It got very confusing at times, so my main focus was finding a teaching style that fit my learning style. Once I “found” my signature ruffle, my love for sewing got a little out of control 🙂

Sewing is something I never thought I would love, but I do. Definitely.

The thing I love most about working for myself is that I can fill my design, social and family needs at once.

5. What are your favorite trends for spring?

-Polka dots 🙂

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-Reading a book. Drinking tea. Playing with my pup. Watching a movie with my husband. Taking a nap 🙂

7. With regards to fashion, as well as your handmade goods, what do you draw inspiration from?

-Color ~ it’s my favorite “accessory” and something I wish I was more bold with.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-I would wear leggings with a cute floral, cotton dress, and a colorful necklace.

9. All of your handmade goods have your signature ruffle on them. How important do you think it is to establish a sense of style and consistency in your work?

-Very important!!! Most of the time a signature design element is what customers (and soon-to-be customers) notice first. My friend recently told me that she was wearing one of my wristlets at the park and someone called out to her, Is that a Gussy? ~ yes yes yes 🙂 having a consistent style to your brand is super important.

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring small business owners? What about someone interested in learning to sew, but isn’t quite sure where to start?

-Three tips: pick a business name that will grow with you as your business grows (don’t narrow it down to something too specific); make sure you love the process of what you’re making/selling; make sure your spouse is 100% on board. You’ll need their support.

And advice for someone interested in learning how to sew ~ read the book Bend the Rule Sewing. It is one of my favorites! Some tips for newbies would be to have a lot of patience (take breaks when you get frustrated, don’t try to work through it.); know it can take time to perfect a straight stitch; learn the basics of your machine, including the tension settings.

Thank you so much for doing this interview Maggie! Don’t forget to check out Maggie’s blog, and the Gussy Sews shop for your daily dose of cute ruffled accessorizes!

23 Birthday Candles

05.02.11
Today I turn the big 23! It seems just like yesterday I was turning 13! Sometimes it is so hard to believe how fast life goes by, but I have to say that I am so happy with where my life has taken me (love, amazing education, blogging, etc.), and I am so excited to see where it takes me in the future (love, marriage, continuing my education, and starting a family one day).

Dress: J Crew; Bracelet: J Crew/gift from my love; Sandals: Sofft

This past weekend I spent time in Northern Arizona with my family, but before I left Scott and I went on a little photo adventure in historic downtown Mesa. I decided to wear this dress to show off what I’m going to be wearing today on my birthday. I originally purchased this dress to wear to graduation, but after falling in love with a different dress at Anthropologie, I decided to count this as my birthday dress and get the dress of my graduation dreams. The J Crew dress was also a super score because it was on major sale!
I just love how the dress swishes back, and forth.

Scott and I spotted this pretty fence while driving to a concert a few weeks ago. Once we came back and took a closer look, we both fell in love with the spot not only for the pretty fence, but also because of the amazing historic home and vintage car that sits behind.

Did you happen to notice that some of the above photos had a bit of a vignette on them? Well, here’s a little story behind the pretty photo decorations. Scott recently showed me this shade/filter he had for a 58mm lens, and since it fits my kit lens on my Canon Rebel, we decided to give it a shot while out on our photo adventure. The filter itself is a bit dark, but didn’t seem to affect the photos much. The shade is pretty long, so it gave most of our photos a lovely vignette. I am really pleased with how all of these photos turned out, and we will definitely be using the shade/filter combo again in the future!

Even though I am technically a spring baby, I will always feel like a fall baby at heart. The colors and scenery in these photos feel so very fall to me, and I just love that. If only I could have a pumpkin spice latte as a birthday treat!
This morning I am celebrating early with Scott before he has to head off to school to finish up a project, and then I’m heading to The Coffee Shop with my cousin for cupcakes and coffee (ok, I might have real breakfast food as well). I also have class x two today, and then I’m going to Liberty Market for birthday dinner with Scott and my family.

Before I go to begin the birthday fun, I want to thank Scott for taking such lovely photos, and for being the shining light in my life. I am so thankful for him and his love, and I so happy and excited to share another birthday celebration with him!
What are you up to today? What do you usually do on your birthday?

A Walk Through Downtown

05.01.11
Happy May!
I can’t believe it’s already May! Tomorrow is my birthday and on the 13th I graduate! WOW! Anyways, the other day I took a walk through downtown Phoenix. I was heading to an urban shopping center on the other side of downtown to grab a photo of it for my ASU blog, but along the way I thought it would be fun to grab some photos of the pretty buildings I saw while walking by. Here is what I saw:
One of my most favorite buildings! It still has the original windows from long ago!

Phoenix’s very own haunted hotel!
This is one of my most favorite buildings in Phoenix. As of now, it sits vacant, but I have hopes that someone will buy it one day and turn it into something amazing.
Our lightrail system! For those who don’t live in the area, the lightrail is a train that goes from Mesa to Phoenix. Right now the route and path is kind of limited, but hopefully one day we’ll have an amazing lightrail system like they do in Portland.
Today I’m heading home from Cottonwood (AZ), but not before a pre-birthday celebration!
What are you up to today?

Green Vegetarian

04.30.11
The other day I had a craving for this amazing sweet and sour bowl that one of my favorite local vegetarian restaurants, Green, serves. So Scott and I took a break from our studies and drove to Scottsdale for a lunch date.

It had been awhile since Scott and I had been to Green, so it was nice to walk into the restaurant and see new paintings hung up on wall, and also a new seating area (complete with handmade tables).
Scott and I both got my favorite dish, the sweet and sour bowl. It has brown rice, crispy tofu (you can get fresh or mock chicken instead), tons of veggies, pineapple, and apples all covered in a sweet and sour sauce. To say it was anything but amazing would be an understatement. I just love this dish.
Do you have any great vegetarian restaurants in your town? What’s your favorite dish from there?

Afternoon Stripes

04.29.11
Lately I’ve realized that stripes are my comfort zone. I’ve always known that neutral colors and cardigans have been within my safe place with regards to clothing, but recently it hit me that stripes fall into that category as well.
Dress: Levi’s; Bangles: Vintage; Tights: c/o We Love Colors; Flats: Gap
I purchased this dress on a mega sale at Levi’s awhile back and it has quickly become one of my favorites. It seems like I have been adding to my stripes collection consistently lately, but I see no problem in that.
In 2008 my mom and I took a trip to Portland, Oregon. While there we stopped in the neatest vintage shop in downtown that had the most amazing clothing and accessories in it. I remember at the time I really want a souvenir from Portland that didn’t consistent of a cheesy Portland t-shirt, so when I spotted these two bangles I just knew they had to be mine.
I kind of love how my tights matched this door. Scott said my outfit was complimentary to the building, which I love. I think it’s fun matching my surroundings!
My hair is getting lonnggg!

Today I’m up in Cottonwood and I’m taking in the the cooler weather while I can. I just love all the trees up here, and promise to take as many pictures as I can.

What are your comfort zones when it comes to clothes?

Spring Spots

04.28.11
I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I just love my town’s historic downtown area. It’s full of quirks, pretty brick buildings, charming boutiques and businesses that have been there for years (some decades). I love that this area has still kept its small town way, even though the epitome of the suburbs has popped up around it.

Cardigan: Target; Shirt: Lucky Brand; Purse: Vintage coach; Raccoon tail: gift from Courtney; Jeans: Levi’s; Heels: Sofft
Around the corner from this pretty brick wall is a lovely shop full of vintage housewares and other pretty items. It’s a bit overpriced for myself, but I just looking in there for inspiration. They owners sure have an eye for great vintage pieces and style.
The other evening Scott and I stopped our friends’ Courtney and Sanford’s place to drop something out and to see if we could pull our heads together to figure out something in Illustrator. While we were there Courtney pulled out these cute little tails that she had ordered offline. Back in October I noticed that she had one that she wore on her person, and I told her how much I liked it. Well, Courtney ended up getting two tails instead of one when she ordered it online, so she gave one to me. It was so sweet of her and I just love it! Thank you Courtney!
These pretty little heels are my shoes for graduation. They are comfortable, low to the ground, and cute! I’m excited to wear them with my dress + cap and gown!

The wind was something fierce the other day!
Today I’m heading up to Cottonwood to spend time with my parents, and to have a pre-birthday celebration. It’s going to be much cooler up there, and I’m going to be in the woods. Such a change from my favorite city living. I’ll try and take a few photos while I’m up there!
What’s your historic downtown area like? If you’re graduating this year, have you picked out what you’re going to wear yet?
