Dreamer

04.18.11

I have no problem admitting I’m a dreamer. I dream up stories, photoshoots, traveling adventures, and scenes from Scott and I’s future quite often. I’m also one of those girls that likes to capture every possible moment I can, and for that I must have a camera with me at all times. I generally like to have my DSLR camera in my camera bag with me, but occasionally I will opt out of carry it and depend on my Droid X camera phone to capture those sweet moments that seem to happen every day. On occasion, though, I love to carry around one of Scott and I’s film cameras (either the Canon AE-1, or Olympus OM-1). The love I have for photos taken with regular film cameras is indescribable, and it doesn’t hurt that carrying around an old school manual camera always makes someone look extra cute (in my opinion, that is).

Silk blouse: Banana Republic; Heart “J” necklace: Etsy; Tokyo Dreamer Strap: c/o Photojojo; Jeans: Levi’s; Red Rose band + white face watch: c/o Tikkr Watches; Quartz ring: Stone & Honey; Moccs: Minnetonka Moccasins
Shirt: American Apparel; Dark Chocolate band + white face watch: c/o Tikkr Watches; Jeans: Levi’s; Shoes: TOMS
The crew at Photojojo was kind enough to send me the Tokyo Dreamer Strap from their shop to test out on my favorite film camera (although it would be perfect to use for my Canon DSLR as well). If you’ve never checked out the Photojojo store, you are seriously missing out. They are the geniuses behind the ever so popular (and amazing) camera lens mug, and also carry a variety of fun camera toys and equipment that would make any camera connoisseur jump with glee (seriously, they have really neat things).
I have to say that I am definitely impressed by the Tokyo Dreamer Strap. The quality of the vegan leather is great, the cute detachable film/memory holder pouch is not only fashionable, but also functional, and the quote on the strap, “Today, I’m just a dreamer, dreaming my life away,” completely goes with how I feel almost every day.

I also really love how in the description for the strap online it says it’s fashion forward, a thought that I completely agree with. I just loved switching out our old black rubber and fabric strap for this colorful, quality one.

On another note, this weekend Scott and I went to see Cage the Elephant and The Black Keys in Mesa (technically on Thursday, but that’s when my weekend starts), went shopping for a graduation dress for myself (I’m pretty positive I found the perfect one at Anthro!), wandered around Phoenix a bit, and did some homework.
The show was pretty fun, although, the line to get in was not very fun. It was at an outdoor venue that has grass seating, so Scott and I found a spot in the grass on the right side of the stage and stayed there for the night.
We were also a little late to the game on Record Store Day Saturday and unfortunately missed out on the fun at Stinkweeds. It’s ok though, we were busy that afternoon shopping with my grandma.

I kind of love both of those photos. So sweet.
Have you ever purchased anything from Photojojo? What’s your favorite item in their shop? What did you do this weekend?

Weekly Ritual

04.17.11

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning I go to Lola Coffee in downtown Phoenix. Now, I know I’ve posted about Lola so many times, but the truth is that I just love it there and cherish every morning that I get to stop in. From the quaint building it sits in, to the smell of coffee roasting, to the unique furniture spread across the room, and to the brick walls that scream “take photos in front of me,” Lola is just one of those places that I hold special in my heart.

I just love these windows, and the pretty view from them.
Some of the best pastries around!
Pretty, fresh flowers make my heart swoon.
What is one of your favorite weekly rituals?

Record Store Day!

04.16.11

Happy Record Store Day!

Today is the day when everyone should take a little time out of their day and peruse their local record shop, searching for hidden gems and favorite records. Last year Scott and I celebrated by hitting up a few local record shops, like Zia and Stinkweeds, and also took part in a little block party in the Stinkweeds parking lot. This year we plan on stopping by Stinkweeds again for a little Record Store Day fun!

Cardigan: gift from my mom; Button-up: Nordstroms; Handmade bag: gift from Scott; Watching: c/o Tikkr Watches; Jeans: Levi’s; Booties: Jeffrey Campbell

The other day after class Scott and I were in Chandler (a suburb of Phoenix) and decided to stop into Zia Records for some record window shopping. This same Zia is actually where Scott and I celebrated his birthday together for the first time (his bday is four days before our anniversary). His band at the time was playing a show there, and I remember bringing him a giant cheesecake as a belated birthday gift. To this day I bake him a cheesecake every year for his birthday. Baking it is always a sweet little reminder of our past, and also of our future (I see SO many cheesecakes in our life together).
Last year Scott made me this little tote out of a vintage pillowcase. It’s such a pretty bag, and perfect for when I don’t want to carry a ton of things around with me.
Because of the little story stated above, this Zia will always hold a little special place in my heart. If I can remember right, I do also believe that Kristine was there as well. At the time we had mutual friends (a few of them were playing that show too), and I just know I saw her there in the crowd. Funny how things come around full circle when you get older.
Scott and I really love collecting vinyl. A few of my favorites we have are Copeland’s Beneath the Medicine Tree, all the Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin albums, and also a few Shin’s albums that I picked up for Scott in Colorado last December.
What are you doing to celebrate Record Store Day? Do you collect vinyl?

What’s In My Camera Bag!

04.15.11
Today I thought I would give you all a little peek as to what was in my camera bag recently. Lately I’ve been dreaming of carrying around Scott’s and I’s Canon AE-1 film camera and taking pretty pictures with it. So I decided to carry my pretty Rose bag, courtesy of Jo Totes, around with some of our film camera equipment in it (along with a few purse essentials, of course).

From top left: telephoto lens plus converter attached to it, 32mm lens, Canon AE-1 plus 50mm lens attached, Coach card holder, Ray Ban sunglass case (classic wayfarer inside), Rosebud salve, LeSportSac bag holding my iPod Touch plus other odds and ends, Coach wallet, day planner.

The two lenses were found in Scott’s house (literally found in a box), and the camera was purchased by Scott for $25 at Goodwill about a year ago.

Coach items were Christmas presents (I love them both dearly).

I bought the Rosebud salve after I saw a recommendation from Emily.

My planner and I are never separated. I need it to write down homework, schedule interviews, and to keep me sane.
What’s in your camera bag?

Windy Days

04.14.11
Once again unstable weather has hit Phoenix, but as usual I am absolutely ok with that. The other day it was super windy and I found these huge trees in Ahwatukee just enchanting as they swayed back and forth.
Cardigan: Rubbish; Eggplant blouse: DownEast Basics; Bracelet: JCrew/gift from Scott; Jeans: Levi’s; Sandals: Birkenstocks

The windy that had conjured up was cold, but very welcomed. Scott and I had gone on a little lunch date to Hillside Spot and the ate outside on their patio (something we’re really not going to be able to do come later in the month).

It was nice to pull out my favorite fall/winter sweater for one last hooray. I’m such a cardigan and sweater girl that I found it so hard to give them up when the heat kicks in. If possible, I would make fall the only season and dress in layers of greys, blacks, maroons, and sip pumpkin spice lattes every day. However, that would probably take away from the nostalgia of the season. I already can’t wait for fall.
I just love the braided detail on this top. I think my cute, blonde hair mustache certainly adds to the look of this outfit. Don’t ya think?
I am pretty sure I’ve never proclaimed my love for Birkenstocks here before. The pair that I currently own has been in my closet for quite a few years now, and they are well loved. Sometimes they can be a little heavy, but I just love that they are a quality piece in my wardrobe.

Tonight Scott and I are going to see The Black Keys, and Cage the Elephant at Mesa Amphitheater. The last time I went to this venue I was a freshman in college (circa October 2006) and I was seeing one of my very favorite bands for the first time (Brand New!). I remember the show not being amazing, as almost all BN shows are sadly, but I do remember just being happy that I was there. I am so excited to have a much better experience tonight with the love of my life. Here’s to good music and unbreakable love!

What has the weather been like in your town? What have you been up to this week?

Retro Train Tracks

04.13.11
The other day I felt like a true 1950’s lady. I woke up with this vision in my head of a striped t-shirt, high-waisted, long skirt, and a pair of pretty heels.

Shirt: H&M; Skirt: Vintage Pendleton, gift from Scott; Heels: Seychelles via Last Chance

I recently picked up these pretty heels at Last Chance in Phoenix. Lately I’ve been pushing myself to try new things, and a great pair of heels was on my list. They were also only $15, so buying them didn’t hurt a bit. Since I’ve been a flats girl for most of my life, walking in them was no easy task. I hung on to Scott’s arm as we walked down the street, and almost tripped on every little crack. They’re going to take some getting used to, but I think they’re worth the practice.

The wind was super fierce this day, and my hair truly did not want to cooperate with me. It wanted to wave wildly, and be free. If I would have been wearing a more flowy skirt, I just know I would have had a Monroe moment. So scandalous!

This week has been for lots of reading, writing, and time spent with my love. I honestly can’t believe how fast time has just blown by this semester. I still have so much work to do, but I know everything will work out. I’m starting on a magazine style article that I’m super excited about (I’ll give you a little hint, it’s a profile piece on one of my favorite ladies), and I’m trying to wrap up taking all the photos I need for my portfolio in my Photojournalism class. Here’s to productivity!
What has your day been like?

An interview with Moorea of Moorea Seal

04.12.11

Today we have a lovely interview with Moorea of Moorea Seal. Moorea is a talented jewelry maker with a love for unique, raw stones and leather, who runs her own Etsy shop filled with gorgeous pieces she has made with her own two hands. She is also a graphic designer with Freckled Nest Design, and resides in the Northwest (girl after my own heart).

Meet Moorea:

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

-Hi everyone! My name is Moorea Seal. I am a jewelry designer, a blogger, a blog designer with Freckled Nest Design, a freelance Illustrator and a musician based out of the city of Seattle, WA. I am pretty good at juggling lots of work as long as I am doing things that I love, which I am 🙂 I have a love for modern design, a balance of graceful beauty with a edgy touch, and innovation in all that I do and love. My blog is all about celebrating creativity, sharing what I make and what I love, and creating a space for women to build each other up and encourage each other. I love being able to remind women of why they are awesome in all that they are and all that they do. Currently I have a project going on my blog called “Paint Your Love” where I encourage women to give themselves a visual reminder to invest in themselves and love themselves. You can read more about it here: (http://www.moorea-seal.com/search/label/paint%20your%20love) Painting my nails is my visual reminder.

2. What got you interested in blogging, and how long have you been blogging for?

I think I started my first blog in high school using the blog host Xanga and then I got into Live Journal because I found a few friends who used it too. Back then, I was a very angsty music obsessed girl and most of my blog posts were filled with rants over how lonely/emo/angsty/straight-edge I was and raves over rad music I found. Ha!

I think I bowed out of blogging when I left for college in 2004. But I started a blog on Blogger when I was a sophomore to post pictures of the art I was making in my classes and to chat about philosophical ideas and questions I was ruminating over. At that time, my blog was called “The Rumination Reading Room.” I started to really invest in my blog and take it to a new level once I started making jewelry for fun when I was a super senior in college in 2009. One of my best friends in my major was running a fun blog that paired with her Etsy shop and I thought, snap, I should make these 2 things more cohesive. I met my friend Kyla from www.KylaRoma.com a few years ago through the blogging world and she really inspired me to step up my blog. And then taking Indie Biz 2.0 last year led by Leigh Ann (www.frecklednest.com) Jill (www.LuneVintage.com) and Elsie (www.ABeautifulMess.com) really inspired me to create a brand out of all that I do and to make my blog the hub of all that I do and love.

3. Can you tell us about your style?

-My style is modern, forward thinking, a tiny bit edgy, and a mixture of elegant femininity combined with just a hint of roughness. And with all of that, I still have a love for the past, mixing in a 70s bohemian chic vibe. I love metals and earth tones. Right now my favorite colors are army green, a burnt orange, pale creams, grey, black, and pops of gold, brass, and silver. I am a nature loving girl so elements of a natural whimsical world often appear in what I create. I think I apply all of this to my jewelry designs, blog designs, favorite clothing, interior design faves, illustration, just about everything I love most 🙂

4. You run an Etsy shop full of unique, handmade jewelry. Can you tell us how you got interested in designing jewelry?

-When I started my Etsy shop at the end of my super senior year of college, I was dating a boy at the time who did wood working. He and I had a similar aesthetic and a love for natural elements combined with modern, chic, simple designs. We thought it could be fun to try starting an Etsy shop together. So I designed all the pieces, he did all the wood working bits, and then I put everything together. We broke up soon after starting the shop and stopped working together as creative partners, but I realized I loved making jewelry as an avenue to create miniature sculptures and a way to share what I love with others so I kept the Etsy shop going. And here we are today! Since starting my shop, I have learned some wood working skills thanks to a good buddy, I’ve taken a metal smithing class, and I have really learned how to apply all that I learned as a Studio Art Major in college to what I make and how I work with jewelry.

5. What are your favorite trends for spring?

-For spring I am obsessed with maxi skirts in neutral colors. I just got an army green chiffon maxi skirt from American Apparel yesterday actually 🙂 Right now I LOVE chevrons, triangles, arrows, and hints of tribal and Native American patterns. This spring, you will probably see me wearing lots of outfits mixing basic tees and tanks with flowy maxi skirts or super short skirts and shorts paired with thigh high socks. I’m trying to wear more and more of my own jewelry because, well, I love it! And paired with really simple, solid neutral colored clothing, my jewelry just pops. I love the pairing of gold and brass jewelry on cream or army green clothing.

6. When you’re not busy blogging, what can you be found doing?

-I live in Seattle and as the days get sunnier and warmer, I plan on being outside as much as possible. My boyfriend and I go rock climbing a few times a week. And I love hiking, snow-shoeing, and anything active and outdoors. I’m also way into music having been a singer my whole life, writing music and playing guitar since I was 15, sang classical music semi-professionally in high school, have released a solo folk album of my own music, and sang with my old band The Mopes. You can check out my solo music here: www.myspace.com/mooreaseal and my old band’s music here: www.myspace.com/themopesofficial. I have lots of friends in the Seattle music scene so I go to lots of shows too.

7. With regards to fashion, and your own jewelry creations, what do you draw inspiration from?

-I love scanning the blogging world for inspiration. I am always excited by new fashion trends that align with my personal aesthetic, so it is fun to hunt down different street styles from around the world for inspiration. I love graphic design and illustration, obviously, since they are part of my jobs as a blog designer and freelance illustrator. So design from any realm effects the designs of my jewelry. I love super clean, organized, modern and edgy design like everything Nubby Twiglet makes (www.nubbytwiglet.com). And I love nature loving, graceful, flower child girls like my friend Kelly Ann from www.TheFlowerchildDwelling.com. I think maybe my aesthetic is somehow a combo of these two ladies style. I want my jewelry to be appealing to both both edgy bold ladies like Nubby and appealing to soft dreamy ladies like Kelly Ann.

8. If you had to pick one outfit to wear the rest of your life, what would it look like?

-Oh man, this is hard. Either: super tight dark jeans with the bottom cuffs rolled up a little, high heeled workman boots, my favorite plaid shirt that was my grandmas, topped off with some of my jewelry 🙂 OR a pale cream chiffon flowing maxi skirt, a grey tank, a dusty pale brown American Apparel zip up, a dark brown leather jacket, and some brown leather oxford flats plus some of my jewelry. I think the key things I always pay most attention to in outfits are my shoes and my jewelry. accessories make the outfit!

9. You’re a designer and exclusive illustrator for the amazing Freckled Nest Design. What got you interested in design work, and what has been your favorite design based project you’ve worked on so far?

-Well I was a Studio Art Major with an emphasis in Illustration in undergrad. My two best friends in the art department were in the Visual Communications major (kind of an all encompassing design major.) While in school, I focused mostly in fine art and illustration. But I loved watching my friends do their design work, mostly based in the computer. I’ve always been a technology nerd, obviously since I started my first blog probably about 10 years ago. And I have always been obsessed with art and knew I wanted to be an artist since I was a little girl. So when I started to pursue Illustration after college as a Freelancer, I also started to view my blog as a great avenue to promote my work. I started teaching myself html tid bits and found that I really loved designing blogs, incorporating illustrations into my work. And now, here I am working as a blog designer and illustrator for the wonderful Freckled Nest Design and doing illustration work as a Freelancer.

I would say that right now, the 3 blogs I am currently working on are my favorite favorite favorite ones I have ever made. But I can’t show you yet! So besides those, I really love the illustration work I did for my friends’ band Hot Bodies In Motion. (image attached) It is always fun working with fellow music makers. And I love the design of my own blog. It just feels like me!

10. Do you have any advice for aspiring jewelry makers? What about someone interested in design, but isn’t really sure how to get their feet wet?

-For those of you interested in jewelry making who haven’t tried making any jewelry yet, head to your local bead supply store and they can connect you with classes and books that can guide you in the basic skills you need to learn. Check out flea markets, thrift stores, and jewelry supply stores to see if there is anything around that really sparks your imagination. Try disassembling vintage jewelry and creating something new out of it.

I highly recommend for anyone at any level of jewelry making to take a metal smithing class. I took mine after college at Pratt Fine Arts Center, in Seattle, which is an awesome arts school open to the public funded by the city of Seattle. It was just incredible the amount of tools that they provided for us students for such an inexpensive class. Once you take a metal smithing class, you can start to figure out for yourself, “Ok, what tools do I absolutely need to create what I want, and how can I design pieces that will be able to be created with the little tools I have. What elements of my jewelry can I simply buy from a supplier, and what elements do I need to forge myself.” You don’t need a huge budget to create something beautiful and unique 🙂 Just be wise about what tools and pieces you invest your money in to make sure you can make a profit if you are considering making your jewelry making hobby into a business.

For those of you who are interested in selling your jewelry to stores or on Etsy, I really recommend that you take the Indie Biz class that is hosted by Leigh Ann from FreckledNest.com and Jill from LuneVintage.com. They just finished up their Indie Biz 3.0 class with Lisa Leonard as their guest teacher. I took the class last year and then taught a guest lesson this year. My jewelry business really got a huge boost by taking that class and I just learned SO MUCH about running a small business thanks to the class.

As for design, I can tell you that having an art school background really helped me. And having friends who are professional designers helped me see from example how to create things well and beautifully. But for those of you who just want to learn some basics of design, I really recommend following Katrina’s blogs Pugly Pixel and Powered By Pastries (http://www.poweredbypastries.com/, http://www.puglypixel.com/). Katrina is a fabulous designer and gives so many great tips on how to get started with learning some design basics even if you have NO idea where to start. She has tons of tutorials and tips and tricks on her blogs, especially Powered By Pastries, the hub of where hosts all of her design tips.

For those of you interested totally redesigning your blog, it is possible to do some small editing yourself. But the awesome thing about Freckled Nest, the design group I work for, is that we have lots of designers who suit just about every style you could imagine who can design your blog for you and have it installed in your blog without you having to do any of the crazy brunt work of trying to learn tons of coding and design programs.

Thank you Chelsea for inviting me over to your blog today! And thank you all of you lovely readers for taking the time to learn a little about me. I hope you visit my blog soon so I can get to know you too!

xo Moorea

Thank you so much for doing this interview Moorea! Don’t forget to check out Moorea’s blog, shop, and twitter page for updates on her jewelry, design work, and life.

Spring Showers

04.11.11
This weekend Phoenix was hit with a rain shower that lowered the temperatures into the 40’s (it was 100 degrees last weekend!), and because of it my outfit for Saturday changed drastically. It felt like fall once again, and I found comfort in some of my favorite pieces from my fall/winter wardrobe.

Umbrella: purchased in a London Eye gift shop during a unexpected rain store in London; Cardigan: Frenchi; Peace necklace: gift; Rose bag in pewter: c/o Jo Totes; Dress: Old Navy; Maroon footless tights: c/o We Love Colors; Boots: Steve Madden

April of Jo Totes was kind enough to send me this pretty Rose bag, and ever since I got it in the mail last weekend, it hasn’t left my side. For ages now I have been searching around for a good camera that could double as a purse. Well, I have to say that I am just smitten with all my new Jo Tote has to offer. First off, I am a huge fan of how padded the bag is. It’s pretty lightweight, and can be worn as a cross-body, or just over the shoulder. It has room for all my things, and with the changeable padded inserts my camera stays safe and protect from all my regular purse essentials.
I also love how I can take out the inserts and slide my laptop in there for when I need to carry it around school. It’s such a great bag and I have a feeling it will be going on many photo adventures with me. Jo Totes recently got in a smaller cross-body camera bag, the Millie, and I think it would be a perfect bag for when you just need something smaller.
Since Saturday was so chilly, Scott and I went on a coffee date to Starbucks to get a few hot drinks (I was craving a latte), and then we headed to the movie theater to see Arthur. We both really enjoyed the movie (and the entire box of red vines we ate). This week we have plans to see Water for Elephants and maybe something else as well. I really adore going to the movies, and definitely find it relaxing after a stressful day.

I have plans to do a “what’s in my camera bag” post soon, but for now here is a peek at what was in my Jo Tote during our little rainy day photo session:

What did you do this weekend?

My Personal Barista

04.10.11
The other day Scott and I visited his mom and the coffee shop that she works at. Scott was feeling a little nostalgic and decided to go behind the espresso machine and make us a few drinks.

Scott and I met at a coffee shop that he used to work at, and he made me a blended coffee drink the very first night met. Throughout the beginning years of our relationship (crazy I can say that, as we’re already going on five years), and I always loved visiting him at work and drinking amazing coffee drinks that he would come up with for me.

I felt a bit nostalgic watching him grind the beans, pull the lever, dump them into the tamper, put the tamper into the machine and watch the espresso as it poured out. He made me one of my favorite drinks (an iced americano) and it was a sweet moment to watch him make it.
Always testing to make sure it’s good for me:
Scott is such a wonderful, sweet man and I appreciate so much all the little and big things he does for me in our life. He is so good to me, and I am so lucky to have him in my life. Love you John Scott.
What are you thankful for in your life?

Chandler Blogger Meet-Up

04.09.11
Yesterday I had the awesome opportunity to meet-up with sweet bloggers that were (mostly) in town for Creative Estates. Ilene, Kim, Sandy, Lindsay, Nicole, Moriah, and Scott & I met up in the lobby of their hotel in downtown Chandler and decided to head to a local Mexican restaurant, Serranos, for some dinner (well, for them at least, Scott & I are early birds and ate with my grandma at 5:30 haha).
I had such a wonderful time meeting everyone, and chatting about blogging and all it entails. Sitting in the restaurant with some of my favorite bloggers felt surreal, and a little overwhelming. I’m a pretty shy person in real life (or so I think so), so when I meet new people I try to overcome my shyness and just chat with them like I’ve known them forever (which with some of them was super easy because I had already “known” them for quite some time).
Before we left Scott grabbed a few quick shots of us girls. I know he took photos on some of the other ladies’ cameras, so keep your eyes peeled for those around the blogosphere.
Here is Ilene and I:

Ilene was such a sweetheart and easy to talk to. She is absolutely darling, and I had such a fun time talking with her about life and blogging. I sure hope our path cross again in the future!
Here is Sandy and I:
Sandy was super sweet and great to talk to. It was so neat to finally meet her, as I adore her blog and shop. She also had an amazing camera that blew Scott and I away, and it was neat hearing about how she handles taking her daily outfit photos and scheduling blogs with her full-time job that takes her all over the country.
I feel so blessed lately to have had the opportunity to meet so many awesome bloggers! I just love the blogging community, and all the wonderful friends I’ve made because of it!
What are you up to today?
